  • What's up, Knights, and welcome back to another reaction and commentary to the brand new House of the Dragon episode, 1x8, 'The Lord of the Tides'.
Man... this was so heavy, so deeply emotional. We were honestly not prepared to be so moved by the filmmaking, particularly the masterful acting of powerhouse Paddy Considine which was gracefully moving in tandem with Ramin Djawadi's score in THAT moment, or as we'd like to call it, Viserys' Swan Song, and arguably the most powerful moment in this show. Other honorable mentions that have impacted us so earth-shatteringly, are Eve Best and Wil Johnson who have brought such dimension with subtlety and ferver with their acting and presence.
This episode was such an enlightening move in storytelling, showing us multiple shades of each character as they move through the treacherous fields of the Game of Thrones and it has only deepened our awe of this show.
What did you guys think of this episode?? What was your favorite moment in this masterclass of storytelling?

The best scene is the one with Daemon helping Viserys get to the throne. He even crowns him. That is what Daemon always wanted, to be by his brother’s side, to protect him and advise him. Viserys first mistake was to deny Daemon the Hand of the King.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Před rokem +37

Man, that scene had us DESTROYED. Even during the editing process we were crying - it was such a powerful scene, to see the vulnerability and gentle nature of Daemon towards his brother. Daemon as the Hand would have turned the story around entirely...

@@OfficialMediaKnights which is exactly what Daemon was saying in first episode. “You’re weak Viserys” “the council use your nature against you” “I would save you, from yourself” “I see Otto for who he is” “Not once have you asked me to be your hand”. ... the end scene between Vicerys and Alicent is very important.... Rhaenyra previously asked Viserys if he believes the prophecy of prince that was promised. And Viserys high on milk of the poppy thought Alicent was Rhaenyra and replied to that question Rhaenyra previously asked him. He said yes it is true and you should be the one to make sure that the Aegon's prophecy of prince that was promised comes true. But Alicent misinterpreted that. She thought Viserys was saying their son Aegon is the prince that was promised and she needs to make sure of it. In his final moments he was actually seeing Rhaenyra. That's why he was saying "my only child". Then towards the end when he raised his arm and said my love, right before he died, he was seeing Aemma. If Luc were to inherit Driftmark right now he would still have a regency because he’s not of age. So he wouldn’t actually be in charge of the fleet. More knowledgable and trusted people would be, while he was learning and growing old enough. So the age ploy is just that, a ploy.
Betrothing the boys to the twins is really a great thing for Driftmark, because even tho Luc may be a “strong” he’s still half Targaryen with the Valeryon name, Rhaena is Valeryon/Targaryen, so their children will be Valeryons in name with a lot of Targaryen blood. I just want to stay in this era of Daemon in peak dad mode. Scales a volcano with no gear to get a dragon egg for his new baby with Rhaenyra. Being tender with Rhaenyra’s baby bump and stroking his son Viserys’ head. Giving emotional support and receiving support from Rhaenyra when they’re both having a hard time seeing Viserys in his current state. Cutting off someone insulting his stepsons and wife quickly and cleanly. Able to assert authority with one word and a raised finger to stop a fight. And just being happy and at ease with Rhaenyra and his family.
Like it prolly would have been great if he was in this dad mode 6 years ago when he was with Laena or a single dad of Baela and Rhaena, but looks like marrying Rhaneyra was really the boost he needed to step up as a dad, and he seems to have handled a blended family of 7+1 kids pretty well.

I dont know if u realize Alicent has been changed in this 6 years, she has redeemed herself to religion (faith of the 7). She doesnt behave as reckless as she did. She is not a saint tho surely :D Also, Otto made a plan for daemon and Rhaenyra not to welcome them, we can see that when they were in small council. When the kingsguard came into the room (he says I did everything as u wish my hand, then Alicent surprised to hear it). It shows that Alicent doesnt care political games or revenge against Rhaenyra much. Also she said that u will be a good queen, then Otto seemed really surprised. She really cared Viserys too.
Finally, the rotten part of Viserys face is on the side of the Greens, it was a good symbolic representation too. And yes, Aemond resembles Daemon so much, thats why Daemon smiles when he face with him, he sees his youth in the eye of his nephew, he is already familiar with nephews attitude. Yes, she seems to have really devoted herself to religion, which may perhaps explain why she was more receptive to making peace with Rhaenyra? Not too sure about that though!
Otto has his eye on the prize, and his gaze never wavers. He knows exactly what he wants out of this, and will continue to play the game, regardless of how Alicent feels. At this point, I do think he will play another game to make Alicent feel like whatever balance and catharsis she found with Rhaenyra at the end of the episode, was a lie, to get her to fight for the throne - again. But we will see!

It is ironic that the seemingly 'fake' emotions at the dinner was actually the most authentic we've ever seen them. It was the only time they were NOT putting on their masks. It shows that without the line of succession and primogeniture and all the other royal madness mirroring what existed in medieval Europe, these people could've been really good friends. But the system they lived in destined them to murder each other. It's like being born into rival blocks in southside chicago. You don't have much of a choice. The dinner sequence was so despairing because they all knew it was the last moments of solitude, but at the same time they probably did briefly delude themselves into thinking "maybe, just maybe things will work out". They’re all unwitting participants in a tragic theater that’s about to unfold.

50:40 - And the trouble with this is that it's the truth. You can't even blame the people who take other positions because it's obvious that Jace and Luke are illegitimate sons of Rhaenyra. I've been wondering for a while if it wouldn't have made more sense to be open about the fact that Jace and Luke are bastards much earlier (Since everyone knows anyway), so that Viserys could have simply legitimated them as Targaryen via royal decree. This has happened many times in the history of Westeros and Game of Thrones, that bastards were legitimized by royal decree. Viserys would not have had to insist that everyone should live in an illusionary world of lies, which obviously only adds more spice to the problem and only postpones the explosion. Of course, Luke wouldn't have any claim to driftmark, but it would have defused the problem with Vaemond and he could have become the heir of Driftmark. Jace would still be heir to Rhaenyra.

You are absolutely right, and I didn't even think of that! There are so many what-if's, so many things that could have been done differently and things would have been better. But alas, this is the reality we ended up with and it's truly heartbreaking. All Viserys wanted was to unite his family, and seeing them somewhat harmonious for those brief moments... What a shame, to know things could have been this way all along.

Oh you're 100% right, even if they weren't his children, Laenor treated them as his own, the children were accepted by Corlys and Rhaenys. It was decided and shouldn't have been called into question. The issue is more that we tried to empathize with a man who, seeing that the children are not of his own blood, is terrified of losing the last thing that belongs to his family to another bloodline. Doesn't justify it at all, mind you, it was more the desperation and rage we understood since there are so many within the court that belittle and despise Rhaenyra for having bastard children - common sense and human decency would suggest those children should be accepted regardless as everyone that matters has accepted it, but it seems that Vaemond was very much in the same mindset as Alicent - puritanical and greedy. I was waiting all day to see your reaction to this episode. Thank you so much for your thoughts you share and your hard work!
Paddy Considine´s performance was unbelievably heartbreaking this episode. It made me cry so hard. Daemon´s pain seeing him this way too :(
I saw different reviewers/reactors equal Daemon with Aemond. I can see that on the surface, them both being taciturn, with strong energy cursing below the surface, having huge fighting skills and not caring about what others think of them. But that is where the similarities end. Daemon´s core is love and loyalty to his family, he desperately cares for them and just wants to be close to them, be recognized and loved by them in return. All his actions no matter how you judge them come from that place. Aemond core is very different. It is the hurt of being bullied as a child and having his eye slashed as a consequence of his own behaviour. I´m truly not sure if he loves anyone.
I feel like Daemon´s core is love and loyalty and Aemond´s core is just rage. With Aemond we will probably get what we see, mostly menancing, evil actions rooted in his pain. Daemon is more than that. There is kindness and vulnerability to him.
The river Nile is mesmerizing. When you stare into it there are layers over layers of waves upon each other and sometimes one layers is glisteringing in the sunshine and sometimes another, deeper one. That is Daemon for me. Aemond simply doesn´t have the depth and caleidoscope of nuances that Daemon´s character has. Matt Smith is abolutely amazing in his portray of him.
What are your thougths on Alicent and Rhaenyra/Daemon as mothers/parents? I feel there is such a huge difference in how they brought up their kids. Rhaenyra´s and Daemon´s children are mostly kind and look like good kids. They also listen to their parents. I loved how a quiet word from Daemon diffused the potential violent situation while Alicent´s children, except Haelena, are disturbing. Somehing seems to be wrong with them. Aegon now is not only a drunk but also a rapist and Aemond is just full of rage.

As for the good sides of Aegon, I'm not sure yet. But somehow I see a good core in Aemond. The scenes with him as a child showed me that he is sensitive and has a good heart. In episode 6 we saw that he just wanted to fit in but was bullied by the others. In Episode 7 at the funeral he stood opposite Jace and even wanted to say something positive. His brief outburst of anger at the table wasn't based on blind hatred, but on Luke laughing mischievously when the roasted pig was served, which of course made Aemond angry. You are very well entitled to your opinion, but with the kind of vitriol you are perpetuating against the 'radical feminists selfish woman' ignores all of the shades that occur within divorce proceedings and other elements that you mentioned.
First of all - no need to victimize Laenor when he had no interest in women and was out there, living his life, free of consequence, and Rhaenyra, due to the ridiculous system of the times, had to find another way to pop out children to solidify her claim to the throne. So she's not hiding the children's parentage from the actual father, but from the politically lustful vultures circling around her DESPITE what the King has ordered - which renders your argument moot.
No sides of this are innocent, and that is the whole point of the show - it's a bloody, ruthless game for the throne and everyone's playing it.

Vaemond doesn't have a point at all. If he's really ONLY worried about "Velaryon Blood" ruling Driftmark, then Lucerys marrying Rhaena solves that. Their mother is Laena Velaryon, 100%. So their children would still be great grandchildren of Corlys, even if Lucerys isn't really Laenor's son. Vaemond's just a second son grasping for the power he's coveted all his life.

And Aemond ( not a fan yet…) he seems portrayed as a level headed men, it looks like he doesn’t want to escalate things YET. We saw that when he got attacked first with a punch but he only retaliated with a push.

My favorite from the beginning was Daemon. I love how complex his character is. He’s a legend. And the way Aemond is looking at him it looks like he lowkey admires Daemon but not in the way that he wishes to be like him… I loved seeing Daemon and Rhaenyra this episode ❤️ bouth of them looked so happy being together and they are good parents as well. Their kids are raised with love and they are educated and kind in comparison with Alicent’s children who are bullying each other and who didn’t receive the same love from their parents. I personally didn’t see one moment with Viserys being as close with his children from Alicent. I am team black but I like to think from the greens perspective as well and I do understand why they act the way they do… the war that it’s coming is just the result of their actions and decisions…

Vaemond had no real argument...The man hide behind false virtue to claim power he neither earned, nor deserved.
His argument stopped holding weight the second the children were betrothed. The family name would survive through the boys and the bloodline through the girls. The minute that was announced by Rhaenys, it was over.
He continued to fight for his own selfish wishes while trying to hide behind the self-righteous banner he deluded himself with. You see his nature during the war in the Stepstones, but everyone seems to take this scene as proof he was honorable or virtuous. Vaemond is hardly the most wicked...probably doesn't even make the top 20 in Westeros...but he isn't 'Good'.

He's right in that Lucerys has no Velaryon blood (him marrying Rhaena fixes the issue of losing the Velaryon blood), but Jaecarys has Targaryen blood so his claim shouldn't be affected. He's half-Targaryen like Alicent's kids and Laenor claimed those kids as his so legally too they're legitimate + the greens weren't even thinking about Jace, they were against Rhaenyra being heir and solely due to her being a woman
