  • How do I erect my Weta 4.4 after a capsize?
Everyone should know how to react - even in an unusual event - of a capsize and be familar on how to deal with it.
This video shows my first attempt to capsize a Weta 4.4 and the umcomplicated procedure to erect it again.
    The basic steps are:
    0. Stay calm! Thats not a problem at all.
    1. open all sheets of mail sail, foresail and gennaker (roll in foresail and gennaker if possible)
    2. open the inspection compertment on the larboard sided hull
    3. sit on the front end of the larboard hull and watch how air gets out and water gets in and it slowly goes down
    4. climb on the skeg (the wind supports the turn by blowing in the raising trampolin)
    5. climb on the Weta as soon as it is completly turned
    6. pull the sheets close to speed up
    7. watch the water geting out of the starboard hull
    8. close the inspection compartment and sail on
Thats also not a problem for shorter and lightweight people. It only takes longer to flood the hull.
I needed this procedure the first time one year later when I had the great idea to open the gennaker at up to 6 bft, already knowing that my counter-weight could not handle the wind pressure in the sail.
When the lifeguards arrived a few minutes later the hull was already empty and I was back sailing. Even the gennaker furler had stucked after the capsize.
For practicing look for water that is deep enough and I recommend to open the sheets in advance, to not damage any part. Even I would like to sell new parts to you... ;)

Awesome recovery "in under 2 minutes" 😎👍

This was a quite comfortable situation to practice the capsize to show the steps and procedure in a video. I have no footage from a real capsize, but trained before I managed to do this also under harsh conditions in 2-3 minutes. But I would not go for it, just to demonstrate an emergency case.

contrary to what it says in the title, the subtitles are not in English!

Please activate the CZcams subtitles in the video menu. These are in english. The title description does not relate to the embedded description in the video. I used these instead of a voice comment.

Very clever use of the inspection hatch to flood the hull and even smarter to be able to empty it once it is righted. You could not do that with a catamaran.
