He was the last hoorah of outlaw country artists to have a major hit. It took anther 20 years before then next generation (Gen 3) to have any major hits in outlaw country and even then it was more mainstream then before.

      Teddy Bear
      Freightliner Fever
      Prisoner of the Hiway
I talked myself out of a ticket coming thru Goose Creek S.C.
a few yrs ago right before Christmas.
I had Roll On Big Mama playing on cd and got clocked doing 79 in a 65 mph zone.
I told the trooper I had that song playing and I wasn't paying attention to the speed limit.
He heard the song playing on my CD and said he hadn't heard it in along time and he could understand why I was speeding.
Super nice trooper...he said he grew up listening to the old classic country music with his dad.

He got worse and worse as years went by. Even at this point he’s not even close to how bad he’d end up. He recovered though (many don’t) but he lost his career in the process. Now he’s a niche nostalgia act that barely sells out bingo halls on his own and each of his albums sell in a year at best what established artists sell in a week. He lost that drive and that’s what the drugs really took away and kept. He is regulated to indie labels and little to no marketing promotion. He is still creative and makes good songs, but you never hear them outside the discount rack.

Sorry, but you are misinformed. This is a cover of an older song that has been covered by many. The song Steve wrote for the movie "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" was "Continental Highway Blues," though he also recorded this for the soundtrack. The original was released in the early 60s, by David Dudley. Written by Carl Montgomery and Earl Green.

Steve still has this guitar and regularly plays it. It was one that was rescued believe it or not by an ex-wife. He recorded his first post "vacation in the ghetto" album Train A Comin' with it.
Though the other commentor is correct in saying he pawned many of his guitars during that period.

Jeff - Thanks for that correction. I have seen him many times over the years, and have never seen him use it since his recovery (and have not seen a video of him with it, either), so I assumed it was one of the ones lost. He has hundreds, though!
