- Jakob Ingebrigtsen came back from his 1500m defeat to win gold in the 5000m for the third year in a row. Ronald Kwemoi of Kenya won silver and Grant Fisher won bronze. He became the first American man to win medals in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Olympics.

Yeah I agree it was an accurate assessment of the situation and very humble too. A lot of people suddenly think Jakob should switch events because of his lack of gold medals in these global championships but they also seem to forget he did just run a 3:26 1500m this year. If it wasn’t for Jakob the 1500m scene would still look like it did in 2016 slow tactical affairs with a blistering last lap, but what’s just my take on the situation. Hoping Grant can upgrade both of his bronze in future championships. Team USA!!!

Because he ducked interviews for 4 days out of embarrassment. Then wins gold and talks about wanting to win “honorably”. Umm, what? They don’t give medals out to the most honorable runner, they give them out to the guys that finish 1-2-3. Just swallow your pride and admit that you ran a tough race and they had to run an OR to beat you, instead you sound like an asshole.
Remarkable achievement by Fisher to medal in both events. I don't think it's sunk in yet for him, but it will.

Watch it again, Ronald suddenly snaps out of it, realizing it’s a question to him, looks to Jakob like “me? I’m supposed to answer??” So Ronald answers the last question he remembers, which was the question to Fisher “if you were in Jacobs shoes, 1500 or 5000/10,000?” So Ronald answers the damn question, “1500 or 5k… or 10k?” 😂😂😂😂😂

Jakob Ingebrigtsen says "it's all about spending your energy wisely, and making good decisions". This is so profoundly true, simple as it may sound. I believe Jakob feels deep down that going out at world record pace in the 1500 for the first 2 laps was ultimately his undoing, and left him helpless to reach launch a kick in the last 150 meters. HIs victory in the 5000 was brilliant. Jakob was not caring about a world record this time. He probably realized, and therefore laid back, since the Olympics is ALL ABOUT THE GOLD MEDAL. So much was expected of him from his country (i.e. Norway's media) and when he did not win, it was total humiliation. Therefore, come the 5000 Meters, Jakob wisely hung back, biding his time, conserving his energy, and when the fabulous Kenyan decided to tear away from the back, and in essence demoralize everyone else from trying to run him down. Jakob waited and then, KERBLAM-O, he accelerated perhaps two gears, and hauled him down. I'm not saying it was effortless; by no means. As usual, there were squawks and barbs about the race being "slow". Balderdash. The pace was a bit slower---until the last mile. I read where Jakob Ingebrigtsen's last mile was a scorching 3:51!
3:51............. Think about it. Jakob looked SO smooth doing that 3:51 last mile. This race reminds me of the tactics of the great Finn, Lasse Viren. Lasse just kept getting faster and faster in 1972, finally wearing out the USA's Steve Prefontaine. In 1976, Lasse, over the last mile, almost imperceptibly began picking up the pace, and amazingly, would not allow Dixon, Quax, or Hildebrand to pass him. Lasse's times I don't remember; I just remember his GREATNESS during each of those gold medal wins. With this brilliant 2024 Olympic 5000 meters gold medal victory, that corking last mile time of 3:51 SHOULD BE REMEMBERED.
Grant is such a smart and well grounded guy.

Jakob was pretty subdued after winning gold. I wonder if he is now feeling the effect of a grueling season. That being said maybe he is planning in achieving a world record before the season is done. I would not be surprised if he plans a 1500k record soon.
He is scheduled to run the 1500 in Lausanne, and the 3000m three days later in Silesia (same meeting where he set his 1500m PB last season). I would not be shocked if he could break both world records in such a short time seeing as he was able to run 3:43 and 7:23 within 24 hours
Not many have attempted the 1500k so it’s possible but that kind of race can be a little daunting for some

Ronald seemed pretty bummed about the silver. Jakob seemed pretty gracious and humble. When he runs, it seems to make everyone else run faster. He is the pacesetter. If you are in a close race with him, you know that you are running fast.
i like watching Jackob race because he runs with a rare fearlessness at the front but my girlfriend just roots for him to lose and while i dont agree with that opinion she says he seems too cocky, but i know to become a champion runner and break world records there is a high level of confidence thats very necessary...

I think his (what would be considered abject) failure in the 1500 was a good reality check for him. He sounds a little more humble here than he sometimes has in the past. Still, very articulate and engaging young man - and a wicked 5K. Well done.

There are no runners that always win and there are no runners in middle to long distance that win gold in 3 consecutive Olympics but it might be possible for Jacob to get gold in 3or 4 consecutive Olympics

Jakob has incredible conditioning to run all these races and still win. That being said, with the strength, conditioning and foot speed of several of his competitors in the 1,500m, it will be difficult for him to dominate that event in the future. Perhaps he should focus on the 5k and 10k going forward.
Well, he does win the 1500m when he doesn't lead more than 500m of the race. So it's just a straight out stupid tactic of him to not follow that principle.

i did not see it live , had no clue who won until I saw a later in the night. I was screaming at the TV for Fisher to give that extra push and seeing he did it was awesome/ I ran sprints in high school and never been close to what these guys been doing. It was a great race and nice to see someone not give up and by doing that he now has an other Olympic Medal Congrats Grant , way to make America Proud with a capital P. Peace and go USA
There are no questions for Jakob to answer in the 1,500, there are so many great runners in the 3.27-3.30 range, any of them can win

If they really knew what he sacrifices to be where he is they wouldn’t have asked that question. It’s a bit disrespectful. Jakob has had almost no time with his new family because he’s had to prioritize getting ready for the olympics. So ask about that. If you want to be the best ever, it demands everything from you. So ask about that. Don’t corner him with questions that he can’t answer because he’s had no chance to experience anything of it yet. Becoming the best ever is very very very hard and comes with sacrifices, so be respectful and ask relevant questions.
Would someone kindly answer some questions from a n00b who doesn't know anything about T&F? 1) Why is the 1500m the only one that people seem to care about? I would've thought that winning a 5k would be more impressive. 2) Why didn't Josh Kerr, Cole Hocker, or Yared Nuguse compete in the 5000m too?
The 1500m, like what Grant said is really the “middle-middle distance” event in track. Its not quite long enough to be considered a bit boring to watch but its not so short that the event finishes super quickly.

For the other medalists in the 1500m, it was probably a personal decision for them so that they could focus on the 1500m training exclusively. If you compare the duration of the events (think like 3-4 minutes for the 1500m, and ~13 minutes for the 5000m) the difference favours some athletes moreso than others.

I always thought it was a fluke when Jakob lost important 1500 races. But now, I'm convinced it's psychological. He can run unimportant races just fine, but when the pressure's on, he's so afraid of losing the 1500 he goes out too fast and gets passed at the end. He doesn't seem to have this issue in the 5000. It's like how Jon Lester could throw to 2nd and 3rd just fine, but not 1st. I wonder if he'd benefit from seeing a sports psychologist.

Not because he chose the correct tactic, or schemed and plotted his way to victory. That would be a hollow victory to him. He wants to just be better than everyone else in 10/10 races. That’s why he said that he doesn’t want to change his tactics, he just wants to get better. So he can run and win his way, in the most clean and ethical way possible. I have the same mindset so I understand him. Not everyone will but I don’t think he’s too concerned about that. When your goal is to become the best ever and have every world record from 1500 to the marathon you’re doing it to prove it to yourself. That’s the person you need to impress. This is how Jakob is, and does things. If everybody understood that there would be no talk about arrogance. People would see that it’s just absolute determination and accountability. The single pursuit of greatness.

Fishers ten km medal was sensational. Was that not the fastest 10k time from a white guy ever? What a performance. Then to back it up in the 5km. Amazing.
