Game: Well, there can be multiple enemies on the screen at once. Which one should I act like I touched?
Creator: That's not what I meant. Just, like, a generic enemy.
Game: Okay, I guess I'll just pick one arbitrarily.
That makes sense. They're moving the hitbox to the coin when a coin collection is detected. That's why spinies can be jumped on.
It picks the last entity form the entities data. Usually rightmost enemy but this data can be arbitrary. Powerups, platforms and firebars can be picked. I debugged the rom and it was funny
And also the routine mess up with whatever entity it picked.
@@PeterSvP guess you fall and dont bounce when a entety or enemy does not exist. Also if you duck coins cant damage you if you are at least big Mario?

Interesting concept, but feels like the developer went above their weight class with this one. If I were to guess, when a coin is collected they create an enemy on top of it and do enemy collision code immediately after, then move it back. That would explain all the erratic enemy kills. There are only 5 slots devoted to enemies and they're often all filled.
im barely into the video and that was my guess as well. its also why repeated coin bounces causes you to not bounce sometimes since youve killed all available enemies.
afaik its a very creative way to do the concept if mario touches coin teleport enemy hitbox to location if luigi touches coin dont. It wouldnt surprise me if bouncing on coins wasnt even an intended mechanic when first designing the game but was worked in later due to the way it appears to handle enemies. it also appears to give him a coin when killing enemies so it adds up
i think the developer was just rushed on getting this out so he forgot to playtest and/or debug the game
Actually, I believe what was actually done was that collecting coins runs the "on enemy collision" code directly, which is what actually causes the enemies to be hit and otherwise unhittable things to change. Presumably the registers are set up to either hit a specific slot or some latest slot...
But what about Mario dying to the coins even when he has a star? And the hammer bro standing on coins? I'm not experienced with the logistics of smb1.
@@arfansthename Or at least saw a viable workaround with the enemy teleporting/ID change strat. (later on in the video it's clear that enemy slots are being set to para-dry bones) This developer clearly has ASM skill, though, I'm sure the sequel will have dedicated code to handle the coin behavior.

10:29 - Since the enemy spawned because the floating platform was transformed, I think it retained the long hitbox from that platform. (Edit: Looks like you talk about this more at 19:22)

This is the funniest thing I've seen in a bit. You get the star and immediately die with it, then you go to get a mushroom and it falls through the ground. It was just too funny. Thanks for the entertainment.
As someone who saw the original stream, gotta give huge props to the editor for smoothly editing down that beginning. The Luigi glide-clip moment was golden, glad it was kept in.

Creator : "YES."
Theory about the coin bouncing: Maybe the bouncing mechanic is hard-coded to do damage on an enemy and gets confused if it's forced and you don't actually have an enemy there. If the sprite slots are full, then the game might assume you must've jumped on one of the sprite slots that are already loaded. This bug might be the reason the author made reskinned buzzy beetles instead of Spinies because real spinies would sporadically kill Mario for no reason. Notably, the Lakitu in 5-1 seems to despawn before the coins in the level to prevent such a thing from happening with the reskinned spinies.
The real question is, do coin bars kill Luigi?
For the original NES game, there are game genie codes where if you touch a coin (powerups & other things) can kill you as well, if anyone is interested.

If I had made this game, I would have a 10 on the multi-coin blocks, and every time you hit them they would count down so you could see how many were left.
And it would count down into the negatives because they would still have more than ten coins.

8:31 - if you read my prev comment. Bottom coin spawns a invisible Koopa under you. It becomes shell. The top coin collects and you hit the invisible shell. At the same frame this same fake enemy teleports somewhere else and possible owerwrires entities. The routine that spawns a koopa under you is glitched. It can take random entity to put under you so you bounce. Whoever implemented this thing definitely knew what he was doing but abandoned it as is. Abusing entity data like this is impossibly hard and to extents that it usually works its masterpiece 😊

Super entertaining hack. Loved watching Nesdraug play two player mode on his channel, extra grateful to see Kosmic game through it all. Perhaps smallfire mario will be available in the sequel, which hopefully also has tons of glitch features 🌀

Per your recommendation in the comments of one of your other videos a while back I grabbed an everdrive. After some consideration I decided to get one for my turbografx 16 since the system is basically impossible to collect for without going broke. Of course I had to find an SMB ROM for it lol. It's pretty clear that the system is clocked a bit higher so the music and gameplay are sped up quite a bit and the colors are just a bit off.
FOOLS! Bro-Op IS the two player mode. The true ending was waiting the entire time.

This is like the anti-Wario Land. Like an ascetic Mario, except Luigi did not take a vow of poverty like his brother so he can collect all the coins he wants.
I debugged this rom. The game is spawning an enemy under you so you stomp and bounce off it then the routine is teleporting the enemy offscreen. Though this sometimes rewrites entity data in a funny way creating very funny bugs

Grabbing them out of habit reminds me of when I used to do the opposite in Minecraft. To fly in some modpacks, I’d use a Blaze morph, but that meant I couldn’t touch water. Then when I wasn’t that morph or even in vanilla, I’d instinctively try to avoid water if I came across some while mining or something

NESDraug explained weird stuff was supposed to happen when you touch a coin in Kosmic's stream, and Kosmic completely missed it.

It looks like whenever you touch a coin it 'redirects' your action [hitting it from the side or the top] to the first object on the screen, which is an arbitrary type [the bullet bill sound or the random shells that have appeared] if there aren't any, possibly explaining why they made it so that you can safely bounce off of spinies?
EDIT: I noticed in the sections with actual spinies [the stars], there either weren't any coins, or they were in a 1-high row with solid blocks on top of them at 26:30, so you couldn't jump on them.
