MAking Herbal Bitters

- Herbal Bitters can really aid the digestive system so it is a good practice to take them just before a large meal - the sort we eat at Christmas time. Herbal Bitters can also have a very positive effect on all the body systems as there are bitter receptors throughout the body.
Today I am making Herbal Bitters to show you how to do it yourself. Usually I would have them made before now but I managed to find enough of the bitter plants that traditionally would make up a Bitters Degustation.
If you would like to know more about supporting yourself and your family with your own medicine, you might like the Introduction to Herbal Medicine course that I offer. Here you will learn about the body systems, the history of medicine, methods of making herbal medicine and even how to design, build and grow a herb garden. Take a look at the course here -

I also sell my Weed Handbooks here - www.danusirishherbgarden.com/...
Another way that I like to work with plants is via the Celtic Wheel of the Year. In the Wise Woman Way training, we follow the Wheel of the Year, finding and connecting with plant allies along the way. This is a transpersonal course, drawing on druidic and shamanic healing techniques. You can find out more about it here - www.danusirishherbgarden.com/...
In February next I am teaching a course about Brigid, the Irish Goddess and how we celebrate Imbolc in the old ways. This is a course that has been designed to help people connect with their Celtic Roots. The course is
Weaving Remembrance and you can find out more here - weaving-remembrance.mykajabi....
Recipe for Bitters - I used Dandelion Leaves and Roots; Yarrow, Chamomile; Calendula/Marigold Flowers, Wormwood along with dried Elecampane, Fennel Seeds and Peppermint. Simply chop them all up and place in a Kilner/Mason jar. Cover with brandy and leave to infuse for 3-4 weeks. You can also use Vervain, Agrimony, Ginger, Hops, Burdock Root, Dock Root and many others. When infusion is complete, strain out the herbs and put the bitters into a bottle. Dose - take 1tsp to 1tblspn about 15 mins before eating. It is best to take bitters straight on to the tongue but perhaps add the bitters to a little drop of water until you get used to the bitter taste. Make sure there are no herbs in the mix that might be contra-indicated for you.

Congratulations 👏🏾 I'm a school teacher of 25 years and can't wait to retire😊
It’s a tonic just watching your videos Terri 🤩💕 thank you 🙏
Love that! Thanks so much xx
Thank you Terri for your weekly gift of uplifting our spirits, along with imparting your extensive wisdom. Dean and I had a 2 trailer semi truck go in front of our van just at dusk on Nov. 14th. The police officer first on the scene, said it was a miracle we survived, especially Dean, whose side of the van was sheared off by the trailer. My side was between the 2 trailers. I already knew your videos are a much needed dose of health. However, with the new eyes to seeing what is a true treasure, along with which people are angels, your videos sparkle even brighter that previously. Nothing will ever replace your videos, Lol's music, and the beautiful way in which they are recorded. I am eternally grateful to you Dearest Terri. Your beautiful soul is beaming out what the earth needs for the changes in the world we wish to see. May blessings be heaped upon you always. Light & Love from Sicamous, B. C. Canada xox xox Bea
Dear Bea, sorry to hear about our traumatic event and may the Sacred Flame of Brigid surround and protect you xx

Thank you, again, Teri! Definitely making my own bitters. We grew up with the store bought bitters, this is even better!
Also love that term; "highway to health"... Makes one more concious of their health maintenance ❤
So glad you liked it! Xx
Thank you for another great video, loaded with information! Im amazed (again) to see all the fresh herbs youve still got growing! ❤
That's the end of them now. They are tired and some will be cut back. Next harvest will be spring time xx
I love learning about the benefits and why you would prescribe the herbs. That sunset at the end with the horse and the bird. Thank you for capturing it Lol 🫶

It's happening everywhere and it's very sad. Stay positive xx
Thank you, I love your films
So glad to hear you are enjoying them xx
“Not to mention the cheese board!”. Made me laugh
Well I do like to get stuck in to it - so just thinking ahead xx😂
Terri I've been taking bitters for few years. Never really understood them. I make my own pro biotics. So then I've been making Swedish bitters . Have it stocked up.
So now you have explained it in a very lovely understandable way
I actually thought I was wasting my time with the bitters. I've been through terrible years of surgery and endometriosis. So bowel problems came after. Thanks for this explanation. I will rethink and try it all over again
Hope they help. Something special when you make it yourself xx
@DanusIrishHerbGarden yes I've only made the Maria treben ones though haha. But I will make note to try collect my own this year xx
A timely reminder.
Just in time xx
My god Terri what beauty your surrounded by, those mountains! That puss is a bit of a bruiser! Is he a new addition? Lovely as always!
That is Pippy. She is about 15 years old now and still looks beautiful. She does have a rough voice though 😂
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden she’s adorable! 🌟🌀
Good evening from Australia, lovely to see you , it’s my bedtime but I so wanted to watch this lovely video. Thank you for your wonderful sharing of herbal remedies. I’m old but new to herbs. lol.
Good night and sleep well.. You are never too old for herbs and what brings joy xx
Thanks so much for the reminder. I had started taking bitters before a meal in the summer but then got out of the habit but determined to get back on track after this video x
Yes, get back into the habit, incredibly good for us xx
Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge! We ❤ your Sunday videos! I love that most of the plants in your area also grow here in my area! Bellingham, WA USA. It's wet and 🌧️ windy...just like your home! But magical in the spring and Summer! ❤
What is WA? Wet and windy - our tribulations😂
@@DanusIrishHerbGardenWA is Washington state USA

Thank you Terri, i really appreciate all your lovely videos. Your rooster is a beautiful boy, I'm down to my last wee hen, they have all passed away with old age this last 3/4 months. Missing the eggs but will get new girls in springtime. ( I felt so sorry for this lonely wee girl that I put an old mirror in the pen so she thinks another hen is there , don't know if I've fooled her or not though lol ). Blessings to you xx
That is so thoughtful. I hope she does feel less lonely xx
Lovely lovely film !! Thank you Terri and Lol ❤ i loved your highway to healTH 😂👏💚 I ll look around the garden nd see if I can prepare someting similar to your bitters ! 🙏

Wonderful to hear that. Thank you xx
Thank you for sharing 🙏🏾🕊✨️🧚♂️🤟
You are so welcome xx
Gorgeous, video… as usual. I just Love everything about it. Thank you Terri. I feel many if not most of us just want a peaceful life away from the rat race, close to the earth like our ancestors were where we can thrive, get along with each other and just be ourselves
Wouldn't that be great! xx
Thank you 🙌🏼
Exactly, puppies -dogs- are not just for Christmas, their are for their whole lives ❤️🙏🏻
At 6:25, I saw a reindeer shape in the root!
To my understanding, Reindeer symbolize wisdom, resourcefulness, cleverness, knowledge, creativity, inventiveness and cleverness. They are honored for their nobility and representing continuation of the tribe.
Continue The Tribe, you wonderful human!!!
Sending so much love to you and yours!
Give kitty a scratch
And tell the dogs hello from Keller, USA
It did look like a reindeer!! What wonderful symbolism too, lets hope the human tribe continues xx thanks for sharing that xx
Thank you for your continued inspiration. I am now using my haw berry tincture and I was able to gift a bottle to my daughter and brother, also keeping plenty for myself. Blessings ❤️ 😊 ❤
Wonderful! Fair play to ya! Xc
Greetings Terri and Lol. You have been blessed with a beautiful day and a bountiful yard/garden this year. My preference to use would be ACV instead of alcohol, for this household. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experiences. Have a great week, and blessings from Canada. 🌲
Glad to share Karen and blessings to you too xx
You mentioned spring, can’t wait for spring😅❤️🧚♀️🧚♀️🧚♀️🧚♀️🧚♀️
Me too!! It's very dark and dreary here today, now that our brief moment of frosty weather is over xx
Of course you could always make Absinthe with the wormwood☺ xx
Send me a recipe please to try it xx
It's impressive what you know Terri. Was your mom as knowledgeable? Passed down is an admirable thing. Blessings for your week 🙏✌️
I'm afraid she wasn't although my aunt, her sister was a trail blazer for me xx Blessings to you too xx
We look forward to your Sunday morning visits. It brings peace and Devine earthly grounding to the Soul.
Thank you for sharing your Spirit with us.
Peace from Wisconsin 😊
Peace to you and all in Wisconsin Charlie xx
Thanks for your knowledge and time. Lovely lady
You are so welcome! Xx
Elecampane is one of my favorite herbs. I take it as a single tincture at times. I never thought to put it on the hob to scent the air! Your bitters jar looks beautiful with all that fresh garden goodness in it.
💚💗💚💗
One of my favourites too - I love it when it is growing and when it is in a tincture and burning on the stove xx
Good morning Terri 🍃☀️
Wonderful refresher on how very important these bitter plants are for us! Thank you!! First snow here in Maine last night and today. Love Seeing your beautiful blue sky and amazing mountain range🍃🌼
Hello Barbara. A sprinkle of snow must be lovely. Hope you are able to enjoy it xx
Beautiful. Thank you so much!
Glad you like it! Xx
My granny often drank a cup of peppermint tea before a big meal to "wake up her belly" & now I know why. Thank you for this very informative video. Stay warm & cozy & have a wonderful rest of your day!
Clever woman - peppermint is one of the easy bitters to take xx We are very toasty thank you and hope you are too xx
Good morning Terri! There is no more gathering fresh in Oklahoma unless you have a heated greenhouse. After hearing how good they are I will plan my planting better next spring but until then I will buy some. Sounds like what I need. I know a wonderful lady here who makes her own. Take care.
If you can get the home made ones, you won't regret it . You will feel the improvement pretty soon xx
Watch out! The food is coming! 😂Love it
Ha ha!! Well, it is 🤣😂
"Highway to health" 🌱🍾👍 Your cat is very talkative 🐈 💛Have a wonderful week as well 🌝
Thank you - we will! Yes she sometimes never shuts up!!! xx
Thank you Danu!💚💚💚

Good morning my Sweet lady nice to see you
Good morning! Hope you are having a lovely day xx
Thank-you Terri and Lol for the videos every week. My five friends look forward to watching them and of course I do as well. Enjoy your new week. Peace on earth. Xxx
Peace on Earth is right Bernadette. Peace to you too xx
Thank you so much dear Terri! It's a very steep learning curve for some when I pass around the bitters at Christmastime. If I can get at least one person on the bitters bandwagon a year, it's a win! 😀
Ha ha!! Yes, I can imagine. The last batch I made was a little heavy on the Wormwood so wasn't for the faint-hearted.😂 xx
Beautiful Sunset with that beautiful horse! Thank you for the Bitters recipe, hope to try it soon ( energy willing)❤
Try it and then you will have more energy xx
Two cute dogies; and, one colorful cat. I don't think we have anything left that is still blooming.
Well remember for next year xx
Thank you Terri super bitter recipe off to make some. Love the breath taking back drops of nature and little furries, luv n light to you Lol, Broc, girlie and moggies xx
That's great to hear. thanks! xx
Thank you, that was great and helpful especially taking just prior to "the big meal"
Glad it was helpful! It is a good idea to take before all meals, but especially those big ones 😉😂
Lovely, Terri! A friend sells bitters at market, and I've thought of making my own - great timing as usual!
I've most of these, plus I'll add some artichoke leaf - as a little boy, my stepson took that with milk thistle seed for his liver and gal bladed - he needed a liver transplant at 11. I often add a pinch of fresh leaf to tea 🍵
Artichoke leave is a great addition xx
Lovely Terri thank you x
You are so welcome Caroline. Hope you are having a lovely day xx
What a gorgeous view! I just love seeing all the fresh plants, herbs and roots. This is a lovely idea and I think I will do a version of this with what I can find. Out to forage we go!
Enjoy the foraging xx
Thank you Terri and Loll! I just love your teachings and seeing the lovely countryside of my ancestral home...🌱🍃🌿
Glad you enjoyed the video xx
HiTerri and Lol, Be Blessed... Thank you so much for the tips on the bitters for the holiday season!!! Prayers and love and peace and abudance and gratitude to you daily!!!!😃🙏🌹
You are so kind Mariel - thank you for all your blessings xx Many Happy Returns xx
Lovely video as always! I've never tasted bitters. Sounds like a great tonic for the whole body. Thank you and blessings! 🙏
It is so very good! Hope you get chance to try some xx
Oh, one more thing! One of the honey suckle cuttings grew some lovely roots! I am thrilled, and pray that they will not die...!
Hurray - will keep fingers crossed. xx
those are gorgeous mountains in the background 9:44
They are beautiful and constantly changing depending on the light. Sometimes they look purple, sometimes black, sometimes far away and sometimes seem to be just down the road. xx

Elecampane is new to me. I appreciate the continual new learning from your videos, Terri. The image of the horse with the bird at the very end of the video was quite amusing. It looked like the bird was pecking at something on the horse’s back.
I expect the bird was picking at some little pest. It did make a beautiful silhouette xx
Good reminder about using bitters. I used to get hiccups often. Once at a bar and the bartender gave me drops of angostura bitters on a lime slice and glass of club soda. Did the trick. Now I always have some in the fridge and some orange bitters. Both are nice just dropped into sparkling water.
They are wonderful. I remember going into a bar one afternoon with a ferocious headache and was going to go home. The bartender gave me a little glass of bitters and within minutes the headache was gone and I felt great! Wonderful thing xx
Thank you Terri, love ALL your videos! You hooked me at Lemon Balm!! Your garden, home, and the knowledge you're sharing are much appreciated. Love from Sweet Home Alabama, USA!💚🇮🇪
You are so very welcome - delighted you are enjoying the videos xx
Thank you. I’ve ordered elecampane seed and seedlings. Ide not heard Of it. Three years till i harvest the root. 😢 oh well. Now is the day.
I’m going to add tarragon as well as my books say it’s a good digestive.
You two have changed my life. ❤ sending sunny Queensland Australia love and sunshine your way. Love Kylie💕
Thanks for the sunshine Kylie. It is worth waiting the three years for xx
I take elderberry syrup , in my fire cider, along with mushroom tincture almost every morning (with a little added organic olive oil) mixed in a couple ounces of water. I now will have to make (or see if I can find) a good bitters to take before meals. Thank you for the inspiration once again. Blessings to you, Loll and the furbabies.
Blessings to you too xx
I'd forgotten all about digestive bitters thank you ❤
No you have been reminded. Hope it helps xx
Thank you for this recipe, I won't have time to make it for this coming holiday season, but I do have a bottle of bitters that I bought from a health food store, so I will use that, great to have the reminder. And Lol's music and video was particularly wonderful on this video. Breathtaking. Thank you both for the lovely sharing every Sunday.
So glad to hear you enjoy the videos and don't forget to take your bitters now that you have remembered xx
Thanks Terri for the great information . Enjoy the week ahead Love to you and yours xxx

Hello Terri,
Hope you are well, really missed your video this Sunday ❤
There is a new video out now xx
Thanks again Terri. I've learned about bitters today.
Happy to help! xx
And don’t forget to shake the bottle vigorously a few times a day for 2 weeks! ✨✨✨
Those mountains!! Hi Terri. Every Sunday I wake up and hurry to see you. Thank you, I always learn something!
That is so lovely to hear xx thanks!
Hi Terri , great video as always many thanks , i love the way nature has all the answers if we just find time to stop look & learn, you make it look so easy its really inspiring me ,i cant wait to use my kilner jars i picked up from a charity shop . Little cat with the sweetest face 😻great shot of the bird on the Horses back brilliant ! the scenery is just breathtaking ... Its been freezing here on the isle of wight past few days ( which is quite rare ) so a bit of a shock but still amazing to see the frost & smell Winter again 🥰 but all please take care out there in much colder parts of the World 🤞xx
We have had frost too and slippy roads - quite unusual but lovely and wintery xx
It is a wonderful idea to make bitters, dearest Teri, thank you very much. I shall surely do this. Have a wonderful week too, I send you and your family all my love.
Thank you so much and love back to you too xx Enjoy making your bitters xx
Hi again = ) your creative caring and sharing ,in your own special way, sure is an example of what is missing in this world most. thank you for sharing... there was a huge campaign against dandelions here in the northwest where i grew up in Ohio. the campaign was to eliminate them from your lawn.. yet we as children would eat them and although bitter. were delicious. and we loved them~!! later in life i found out that the dandelion.🌻 is one of the highest in nutrients and vitamins of all green leafy🌿🌱 plants, 💐
Children are wiser than adults - they still know things!😂 xx
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden funny how true that is.💡 they seem to have a special knowing. even if sometimes learning the hard way... lol... just as the 4 legged have so much to learn from~! looking forward to seeing how your bitter's turned out~!
I never knew about this. Thank you!
Hope it is useful for you xx
Hi Terri. Thank you for a lovely video and the recipe.I can see you have a clear sky, that has made my day ❤❤
We have had clear skies for a week now Genoveva - always welcomed xx
A very useful video as usual, I would like to make the herbal bitters, but only have dandelions left growing.
Loved seeing the cat coming towards the camera and meowing. Thanks
Make it with Dandelions. Even one herb is incredibly beneficial xx
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Thanks, I will have a go, but probably use apple cider vinegar .
Wonderful! So much better than a Tums lol. Can’t wait to add this to my collection 😊 Have a wonderful week and blessings to all 😊🙏❤️
Thanks Mary we will and blessings to you too xx
Good morning to you, Danu... And thank you.

I will go buy some asap, the hyway to health… make a T shirt with this saying on it… brandy my new health drink😉🌱
Good idea for a t-shirt! Enjoy your bitters when you get the chance xx
A great film again this week Terri, very interesting, it wasn’t until the end that I remembered that I was instructed to make an alcoholic drink using bitters, which could also be used in very small amounts in gravy. Thanks for jogging my memory and for this recipe, all the best.
Glad to have helped Deana. xx
I have not ever heard of this before. Thank you for all of these new things you are teaching. ❤
You are so welcome xx
I appreciate the step-by-step tutorial on creating bitters. I have been taking an enzyme before meals to help with digestion and would prefer to make my own bitters from scratch.
By the way, your videographer does a mighty fine job, communicating the playful side of life with the pets. Also the cycle of life is always shown which is relaxing to watch.
Glad it was helpful! Glad you enjoy the videos too xx
Very nice. Thank you. I love your garden and all your companions 😀

I am so going to try this. I have just about all the ingredients (mostly dry), but why not! Thank you. xx
