MISERY (1990) Movie Reaction! | First Time Watch | James Caan | Kathy Bates | Stephen King

- For the first time, Steph & Achara watch Misery, an adaption of the best selling novel by Stephen King about an injured novelist who is held hostage by a nurse, who claims to be his biggest fan. What an intense thriller of a film to watch.
Misery is directed by Rob Reiner (This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally...) and written by Stephen King (It, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Shining) and William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men and Chaplin). It stars James Caan (The Godfather and Elf), Kathy Bates (Titanic and About Schmidt) and Richard Farnsworth (The Natural).

The genius of Bates’s performance is the delicate balance that can tip without warning from sweetly cheerful to psychotic rage.
I don't think there's balance all the time, when she swirls round and kisses I think it's over the top.
It's interesting that they mentioned her eyes, because in the book, she was supposed to have the eyes of a doll, unreadable. It's remarkable that she was able to realize that.
That’s not balance….that’s a mother in law!
Kathy Bates being Kathy Bates. Maybe not to this level but I feel like alot of characters she plays toes that line. Most that I've seen anyway. An incredible talent undeniable to be sure.
Kathy Bates has rightly gotten tons of praise & awards for her performance here, but James Caan did a fantastic job as well, especially in conveying the agonizing pain and suffering Paul is going through.
A true Stephen King classic. Kathy Bates is a treasure. She can do it all, comedy, drama, horror, suspense. I love how funny she can be and then is equally as terrifying.
I wish they would hurry up and do a Revival adaptation from Stephen King. I just finished it recently freaking so creepy and the story lingers with you for a while.
This was Kathy Bates first movie. That's what I understand anyway.
@@chiefsteps-in-poo8447This was like her 7th movie.
@@DJKuroh
I don't know about numbers. I would imagine it's Delores Claiborne. If it is, SK was so impressed with her work on Misery that he wrote that book just for her. Just imagine that, having one of, if not THE, best horror writers in the world write an entire novel just for. What can I say? Some people have it, others don't. I'm one of the others.
@@DJKuroh
Oh, I'm sorry, I read your post wrong. I believe I heard it was her first.
The scary part of this story is how believable it is. When you look at murderers who were obsessed with their victims, such as Selena's killer, who was president of her fan club, or people like the guy who murdered John Lennon, it is very eery. Cathy Bates is so great in this, scary and sympathetic at the same time.
yolanda saldivar, may she rot in a cell till her last breath
In the book he doesn’t burn the book at the end he fakes it and then publishes the new misery book so she’s the only one that never gets to know what happens to misery.
I like that
Yup, and he asked her to stop reading the rest of the chapters leading up to the ending.
Was the book a real good read?
@@LifeisANovel It’s definitely worth the read. It’s even crazier than the movie.
@@LifeisANovel yes, it went deeper in depth than the movie but it was long though so I listen to the novel audio.
No boring CGI, no worthless scenes or characters. It's a perfect movie.
Amazing that Rob Reiner directed Spinal Tap, Stand by Me (another great Stephen King adaptation, but non-horror), The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and THEN did this film, followed by A Few Good Men. A great run of films. Your reactions were perfect. Kathy Bates totally deserved the Oscar she won for this performance.
😂 The look on Steph’s face when Achara mentioned this was a Stephen King movie.
No, this is Rob Reiner and William Goldman (screenwriter) movie, King wrote the book, had nothing to do with the movie.
Like everyone else, I think Kathy Bates was fantastic in this movie. But I also feel that James Caan did a great job in this role and is really underappreciated.
Yes, unfortunately, he gets overlooked/overshadowed by Kathy Bates in this, but he was so great in this. He conveys the terror and desperation of his character so well.
Nobody would take the role as they knew it was quite passive and likely to be ignored.
Caan is just as good as Bates, imo. He delivers a very understated and convincing performance. His facial reactions to all of Bates' psychotic outbursts are perfectly conveyed.
underappreciated - by whom?
“Hey, his legs look pretty good!”
-just before the hobbling scene
“He didn’t get out of the COCKADOODIE CAR!”
When you watch the prequel on Castle Rock, you get a glimpse into how she came up with her 'own' adjectives
Just saw a meme of the poster from this movie but it was titled “Footloose” 😂
Ohhhh Footloose 🤣, I feel so stupid for taking so long to get the joke.
So fun watching a new generation discover the genius of actors Cathy Bates and James Caan! ❤😂
In his autobiography Stephen wrote how misery was about his alcoholism and how he felt trapped by it.
The prequel story of Annie can be found in the show Castle Rock. She has a lead role in the second season!
Castle Rock is on Hulu!
@Reefism oh! It's on HBO here where I live.
Yes. Definitely watch that. So much insight into Annie
Kathy Bates gets a ton of praise for this performance, and rightfully so. But James Caan did a great job also. Great movie. I like when you two do reactions together the most.
The hobbling scene assured that I never hear Beethoven the same again.
Kathy Bates is so good in this movie. For me, Annie Wilkes is one of the scariest villains in movie history because she seems so real.
True, religious nutcase, very real.
Rob Reiner has really made some terrific films
I love the movie. Kathy Bates is just so good. She is amazing. She sells the insane fan so perfect it's scary. Not only that, but she can play them all. The insane, the funny, the gross, the racist, the adorable. She is genius in Dolores too. Another great movie.
King said that Annie Wilkes was his cocaine addiction that he was trying to kick off at the time he wrote the novel.
You could say that drug addiction is in a way an abusive relationship but I really like your take on it, that it could be an allegory of living with an abuser and the film really could represent that.
About Annie Wilkes, that was Cathy Bates portrayal the one time sweet then without warning switching to short tempered as in the book, Annie is from the start presented as an unhinged psycho.
I think the cinematic portrayal is very layered and Kathy Bates did an incredible job that 100% deserved the Oscar for best actress.
King wrote the book Dolores Clairborne with Bates in mind after seeing her performance in Misery. Dolores Clairborne is more a psychological drama while Misery is more a thriller, but she agreed to play in the cinematic adaptation and she also superb in it.
A word on James Caan.
Being bed or chair ridden for almost the whole movie, he had to act more with expressions but it was fantastic, he really pulled it off and gave also an Oscar worthy performance.
Buster was not in the book, he was created for the movie but his banters with his wife were so entertaining that it's a shame there never was a movie of those two solving cases.
20:45 Literally one of the most horrifying things I have EVER seen on film. 😳 Great reactions ladies!!
P.S. I'm still pissed about what happened to Buster.
What about the Human Centipede? most horrifying way to sew people together 😮
@@vernonsmith6176bu iğrenç ve rezalet filim onu misery ile mi kıyaslıyorsun!?!Sen kafayı kırmışsın.
That final set-piece where Annie’s head hits the typewriter is absolutely perfectly executed. I don’t know how Rob Reiner did that without killing Kathy Bates!
Annie's character is meant to be a metaphor for Stephen King's struggle with drug addiction. Once you know that it'll seem kinda obvious next time you watch it. Totally blew my mind when I first learned it though.
One of my favorite adaptations of Stephen King's works, there is so much genuine tension and dread in this film. Loved seeing your reactions to Paul wandering around the first time and freaking out over the penguin, I remember reacting the exact same way when I first saw this 😂
Kathys performance is just masterful!Steph your facial expressions throughout were hilarious😂 awesome reaction guys!😊
She was even scarier in the novel, if that is even possible. Because she was just so unpredictable, and when you feel you got her insanity figured out and tried to condescend to her, she would surprise you with an uncanny intelligence. And ironically in the novel he did produce what he consider his finest work while trapped by Annie Wilkes.
This is not a horror. It is a suspenseful thriller. People get confused because it is written by Stephen King.
@@clevelandcbi I think he is a horror writer at heart, but with the depth of his knowledge of psychology, he understands that horror doesn't always mean something occult or supernatural. Some of the most powerful horror comes from reality. I totally believe this movie is based on Stephen King's personal horrific nightmare, especially because he and his wife did experience a "super-fan" breaking into their home. And I honestly can't think of another writer who can create characters like he does. As a writer myself, I aspire to be able to create characters with just half the depth of his. What an incredible writer.
I found it scary 😢
As king himself said: i would like to call myself a suspense writer, not a horror writer
@@clevelandcbi His first big success was a horror novel. He's been sort of typecast ever since, because that's sort of his shindig. But you look at his other works like Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile and they're beautifully written.
Thank you for saying this. I don't know why anyone would think this was a horror
Everyone knows Kathy Bates is a great actress. But this movie showed why she truly deserved that Oscar! What a spine-chilling performance!
I'm 35 and still choke up a little bit when he has to burn up his book. It makes the moment with him burning Annie's book all the more satisfying.
My dad showed me this movie when I was about 12 or 13 and it made me so nervous with her mood swings plus his injured body crawling around the house.
Seeing Steph annoyed throughout the movie and @ 27:59 😆🤣Not sure if you had noticed but James Caan who had played Paul Sheldon played Sonny on the first Godfather (1972) Paul Sheldon's agent Marcia, was played by one of Hollywood's greatest glamour actresses of the Golden Age of Cinema in Lauren Bacall. Her career started in the early 40s and was active until her death in 2014.
Upvoted before watching...I have watched Misery before...just excited...!
"I'm your number one fan."
Fun Fact: Director Rob Reiner cameos as a helicopter pilot.
Gun Enthusiast Fact: Annie's (Kathy Bates) revolver is a Colt Cobra "D" Frame .38 revolver.
Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Annie's (Kathy Bates) jeep is a 1974 Jeep Cherokee S [SJ]. Paul's (James Caan) car is a 1966 Ford Mustang. Sheriff Buster's (Richard Farnsworth) car is a 1972 Chevrolet Blazer [K-5].
Lost In Adaptation Fact: While there were many minor changes from the novel, there was one major change. In the novel, Annie (Kathy Bates) cuts off Paul's (James Caan) foot to prevent him from escaping. Screenwriter William Goldman had stated that the reason he decided to adapt the book to film was because of this gruesome scene, and the effect it would have on the audience. However, Rob Reiner and Andrew Scheinman's script revision changed the method of torture to Paul getting his ankles broken with a sledgehammer. Goldman was opposed to the change until viewing the film.
Typewriter Enthusiast Fact: The typewriter that Annie (Kathy Bates) buys for Paul (James Caan) to use is a Royal Model 10 typewriter. The Royal 10 was one of the first successfully mass produced typewriters which would set the technical standard for most typewriters that would follow it. Produced between 1914 and 1934, Paul's model can be pinpointed to be from 1914 to 1923 due to the double paneled beveled glass located on both sides of the machine. Models from 1924 to 1934 had only single paneled beveled glass. The 10 model would see use well after the model was discontinued as Royal Typewriters subsidiary Rigal Rebuilt would completely refurbish and rebuild the machines after they reached the intended lifespan giving the model many more years of use well into the 1950's and 60's. Due to its mass sales and twenty year production the Royal 10 remains one of the attainable typewriters that can be picked up by collectors of the machines in the 21st Century.
She then cauterized the wound with a blowtorch if memory serves
Kathy Bates winning an Oscar and Golden Globe For this performance was everything
When you see the movie more than once, you realize she spilled the wine on purpose.
20:42 That's Kathy Fucking Bates!😂 She's a legend I love her.
My parents took me and my sister to see this in theaters when I was 6 😮😅 it’s hard to get passed her after that when you see her in later films. She’ll always be the crazy lady
I remember being horrified by this lady watching this movie as a kid, but now that I know what it's like to wait nearly a decade and a half for Winds of Winter, and having given up on ever getting A Dream of Spring, I no longer judge this poor lady.. I totally get it...
I know!! I keep wanting pull a Misery in him!! But I believe in positive reinforcement so I would be way nicer!! Lol
🤣🤣🤣
When it comes to Stephen King movies I always read the book first . In the book , she chops off his feet & the Buster gets run over by the snow cat to get chopped into little pieces . Of course , there's many diff things also 👌
The dynamic duo returns!
Misery is a love/hate letter from Stephen King about addiction and toxic relationships. Writing, fandom and alcohol use all have high highs and very low lows
Almost the entire movie is just those two in that house.
The acting is brilliant!
Great reaction, w incisive discussion - I like how Steph's eyes glaze over at the beginning, like she's kicked into survival mode once she realizes what they're making her watch - but then she lights up as she gets into it - plus Achara's Maria Callas opera reactions to the suspense lol - Siskel and Ebert had a great debate about this in "If We Picked the Oscars", where Ebert picked Bates for how she "turns on a dime" here, while Siskel picked Angelika Huston's multifaceted, also frightening turn in Grifters - two brilliant performances -
You BOTH championed your way thru this stupendous King Masterpiece! If you want to watch a Young James Caan, then add the film "Brian's Song" - 1971. Look forward to future reactions.
Best Actress Kathy Bates
“Your’e wearing loafers in the snow?” She’s a savage.” 🤣❤️
My favorite part of the reaction. You both looked like you were watching while under arrest...26:46.
😅😅
I love when you two react together 😊
When I was 12, I was hit by a truck while riding my bicycle. A church couple took me in and nursed my injuries. They kept telling me I was their "miracle child" and refused to let me leave the house. They weren't threatening or anything. Just ridiculously insistent on me staying. This was in the late 1990's.
I escaped the next morning while they were asleep. When I see things like this movie, I wonder what would have happened if they were a violent couple.
If you're wondering what happened afterward, I got home and got a severe beating from my mom with the aid of her ironing board. She didn't believe my story. Thanks for reading.
Woah!! That’s wild! Glad you escaped but sorry you got a beating for your troubles afterwards 🥺
I have no idea how many times I've seen this movie all the way through or how many reactions to it I've seen, but the hobbling scene gets me every time.
You should read the book and find out what she really did to his feet! 😲
@@GodlikeLFC97 I’m really not much of a reader. But I’ve heard that she did very horrible things to not only his feet. But to the rest of him.
Great reaction you two are amazing, I just wanna tell you IM YOUR NUMBER 1 FAN
😅😅
Thalaivaaaa😂
The only symbolic quibble I have is that the final blow was from the pig instead of the typewriter, which I believe is what kills her in the novel.
35:20, excellent observation!!! He did and tried everything he could and it was real, it was stuff we all wouldve tried. This brought the audience further into the film/story. I have seen this movie 15 times over the years, never thought of it that way, again, great observation.
You asked about Annie's prequel story... Hulu's Castle Rock Season 2 explores that and It was very well done.
You should definitely react to The Hitcher (1986). An underappreciated gem
That was an awesome reaction, especially at the final fight when you both had your hands on your head....too fun!! Thanks for the great reaction. Keep smiling 👍🙂
Great reaction, girls. I'm your Number One fan. Especially liked your line "bash her head another two more times", and "she's gotta have her throat punched out". Shows how effective Kathy Bates' performance was if you react this way. Do you think Stephen King had an experience to trigger writing this?
20:00 This is one of my favorite instrumental songs! Moonlight Sonata! I first heard it in this movie and playing the Resident Evil games! This scene was intense!
Kathy Bates was brilliant in this. So was James Caan, but Bates!
Also kudos to King for such a great story.
Paul Newman, Warren Beatty, Ryan O'Neal, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Robert Redford, Jon Voight, William Hurt, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, and Michael Douglas were considered for the role of Paul Sheldon.
Fantastic movie and book. Dolores Claiborne is another great Stephen king movie with Kathy bates as a lead. Trigger warnings all over the place for that movie though, just to warn you
The script for Dolores Claiborne was written especially for Kathy Bates. It's such a great role for her!
I would love to see you two react to "Fresh" with Sebastian Stan and Daisy something. I forget her last name.
I think yall would like it
"If anything happens to Buster, I'm going to war".......uh oh
Classic movie!!!!! Hope you two like it! 🙏🏽💪
T.HIS was a great film. With plenty of humor to boot
"If anything happens to Buster, I'm going to war."
Better get your gear on...
Damnnnnnnn!!! So good to see a classic being reacted to by best reactors! 😂❤
When I saw this uploaded, my first thought was "Oh no, poor Achara", because of the hobbling scene.
Saw this in a theater in Des Moines during Christmas 1990. I was NOT OK leaving the theater; that was just too intense.
I like Stephen King but Misery was, literally, the first of his books that I couldn’t put down once I started it. It hooked me from the beginning.
EDIT: And in the book version, Sheldon did fall in love with the new Misery book he was forced to write so, knowing what his plan would be, I think he did make a copy.
"I have this gun." "Thanks for showing the class, Annie!" LMAO Subbed!
I would suggest another movie Dolores Claiborne. Its not as well known but its Bates favorite performance and its really really good.
And Gerald's Game since the two are connected
Season 2 of Castle Rock focuses on the prequel/backstory for Annie Wilkes.
Season 1 of Castle Rock (a new show that just came out a couple years back) is Annie's prequel story. I believe Stephen King had a hand in writing it, too, at least in part. It's pretty well done. You can do a reaction to a season of Castle Rock without doing the whole series, as each season is a different story (though there are some crossover characters and such from the SK 'universe').
It's actually Season 2. But yes, it's a great prequel story for Annie Wilkes!
34:15 That's why her and Anthony Hopkins both won Oscars for their performances in those movies.
LOVE that you watched this 💗💗💗💗💗
Look up "Rebecca Schaeffer" and discover this was a supporting actress in an American sitcom. And life-ending horror. From a "Number One Fan".
This is the only movie that ever frightened me, simply because its actually plausible.
In the novel Paul got one of his foot chopped off by Annie instead of broken with a mallet, and had to spend the rest of his life as a cripple. I actually like the adaption's ending more: I mean traumatic flashbacks are in themselves hard to deal with, give this poor man a break and at least keep his body intact.
Oh, and you're right about "sometime like this could happen in real life" because it did happen. Mark David Chapman, the crazed fan who killed John Lennon, was obsessed with *Stephen King* for a while before he turned to Lennon--meaning that King himself could've died to a psychotic fan like Lennon did.
His next book will be called Misery Loves Company lol
this is my favorite move Thanks you for reaction it I love you so much friend's
Kathy Bates got an Ocar for her performance. James Caan too is fantastic !!
@20:02 you said "his legs actually look good" I laughed hard at that knowing what was about to happen already
Great Movie, Great Cast, Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie & Great Reaction Ladies
Kathy Bates is a tremendous actress.and is just as good in comedy with the WATERBOY.
Yall both was dropping Gems , I didn’t even notice early in the movie when the Sheriff was otp - Annie did tell hike the phone lines were down. & you both mentioned a Prequel- that would’ve been gold to get Annie’s origin story.
"Steph and Achara, I am your number one fan." LOL
The uneasiness between you two made me laugh but in a good way!!! Thanks!
I am writing this to help out these ladies and this video and this channel with the algorithm 🥰❤️✌️
Only a couple "dirty birdies" would look away during the hobbling scene... You COCK-A-DOODIES 😆 LOL
This was entertaining! Great job!
20:30 In the novel, Annie actually CUT OFF Paul's foot with an axe & cauterized the wound with a blow torch. The director thought that it was too gory & extreme to do, so they toned it down.
Yeah...THIS was their idea of "toned down."
I was waiting for you guys to get to the hobbling part. 😬😬😬. So brutal!
Luvvvly Reaction ladies Goodnight 👊🏻
prequel story is in the 2nd season of CASTLE ROCK.
Your reactions and comments were very impressive, Great job! I subscribed to your channel based on your spot-on perceptions.
Rob Rienor did amazing work directing this movie
This may have been the greatest reaction I’ve ever seen🤣
His phone line was working because he was in town. The line from town to Annie Wilke's farm was down.
In the book, Annie cuts off Paul's leg to keep him from leaving but that was never going to get into this film so they came up with the idea for hobbling him instead. Somehow, it's actually way more graphic and painful then limb dismemberment.
She only cut off one foot, actually. She chopped it off with an axe and then immediately cauterized the wound/stump with a gas blowtorch. As horrible as that was, the movie was worse.
@@heyheyjk-la woops that was supposed to be leg, not legs, thanks
