I don’t know what popularity is actually like but it’s often portrayed in fiction as the kind of thing that I either wouldn’t really notice or find myself generally annoyed by. The idea of having constant attention is scary to my ambivert self and I don’t understand the whole “competition” thing but having lots of people I know would generally a good thing.

HaAhahahHahah don't ask questions you don't want to know the answers to. My memory fluctuates from being able to recall exactly what happened on June 4th, 2003, and not knowing what color shirt I put on this morning.
A specific date of time I remember is 2009 July 9th I was playing outside!

They competition speech was something that I wholeheartedly agree with. The whole point of competition is agreed upon goals and some sort of rules so someone suddenly trying to become more popular than someone else is either just doing a thing or conflict in an… unsavory way.
Same with the drama behind dating. The logic of “Woah, X is dating Y, this is a great headline!” is often a result of people forgetting that these are real people rather than just a story. Can’t people with high-profile jobs still have private love lives?
