I am a defender and for me it's the best feeling in the world. When you stop a very dangerous shot, when you cut a pass and specially when you stop the other team best player and he gets very angry becouse he can't nutmeg or pass through you.
I am a centre back and the best feeling in the world is just sliding into the ball and the other player just falling over your legs and being angry. It doesn't get any better than that.

I expected greatness from vvd. But what he's done is nothing short of mind-blowing. As soon as he stepped onto the pitch. Every single Liverpool player raised there game by 30 40 % . Sensational.
Watching this man play (especially if you are Liverpool or Netherlands fan) makes you appreciate defense on a whole other level. Every time you see a player running away with the ball and it's on Virgil's side you literally have no fear or stress. He can keep pace with fast attackers, out-muscle big ones, will win about every aerial battle, he's agile and most importantly he is soo smart, years ahead of most defenders. The way he positions himself to start with already makes it that much harder for the receiver of the ball and once he's into a race with a defender, the way he angles his runs is pure genius because he reduces the choices the ball carrier has to the bare minimum and the least dangerous ones. Regular 9/10 performances. Since the game has improved so much recently with the amount of money and technology, sports science etc. the players he’s up against are faster and teams play better, only Ramos and Varane come close.

I played as a defender from school boy into semi pro, hanging up my boots in my mid 30s, I based my style and philosophy on Alan Hansen and it served me well, I was damn good, I can't look past my hero and one of the GOATs of the defensive game in Hansen but I imagine if I had grown up with VVD, wow he sure is a phenomena in all aspects, if VVD goes on to be as consistent as AL over many seasons then for me he will be without doubt the GOAT bar none..

He can position himself like an expert. No passing him easily.
He can tackle very well. Standing and sliding.
He can keep up with fast players with his decent speed.
He can defensively head the ball very well.

He can lead his whole team as a solid personality, be their backbone and lead his defense while making Gomez/Matip/Lovren better players because he's there to watch over them.
Rarely see him being excessively aggressive. His timing for tackle is very good.
He’s everything you could ever ask for in a defender, and I don’t discredit Gomez either he’s superb 95% of any threat they’ll dealing with it no problem
