  • This pair of vice grip players was found a foot in the ground while digging post holes to build a deck. The pliers had been in the ground for many years. The pliers were completely rusted shut. This was a very difficult restoration .

The correct name is locking pliers, vise grip is only a name brand. This guy has more incentive than me, I’d have just bought new ones.

First I would have used a hammer to knock the really hard crusty stuff off without damaging the locking pliers. Then I would have followed it up with a really good go-around with a stiff wire brush to get most of the mud and crud out. Following that if you were going to remove rust electrolysis you might want to take a file and expose some metal completely raw in a couple of spots that you then want to run your wires to for better connection. The result you get will be dramatically improved. You won't have to do it three times for starters. Evapo rust is a good option although you didn't need to pour in quite that much. Meanwhile I think I would have just gone and picked up a new pair of pliers. Too labor intensive and not cost effective to do a restoration like this.
Fun to watch though. Although I will admit sometimes doing a restoration just because you can and to learn new skills is always worthwhile.

Renovace super, ale proč proboha použít nůž na prvotní odstranění nánosů rzi a nečistot? Na to používá drátěný kartáč nebo úzká kovová špachtle.

What a brilliant restoration. If the metal was no good and it fails, you have nothing invested but time. If it succeeds, you have a free set of pliers. Hats off to you. I'm guessing that short strand fiberglass is the same as Bondo? For the benefit of the naysayers, names like Bondo, Vice Grips, Band-Aid, and so forth have universally become the names of products as much as they are brand names. No one needing to cover a wound and control bleeding shouts, "Quick, where are the adhesive bandages?" Hahaha I call those pliers "Vice Grips" regardless of the brand no one I've ever known refers to them as anything else. I'm sure the brand owner of Vice Grip pliers greatly appreciates that. That's the goal of all brands, to become a household word.

for 9.98 at Walmart you can get 3 in one package of different sizes . That's why people just throw tools away rather than fix them . There was a time
when we took care of our tools (oiled them) . How many people even know what an oil can is?
