damagejackal10 The xbox had simply better hardware with better specs thus the Xbox was more powerful than the gamecube, it's not a difficult concept to grasp.
This game gives many modern space combat sci-fi games a run for their money, in that this game has the one of the best space fighter combat experiences I've ever seen. For example, when you play for the Rebel Alliance, which is the majority of the game, the enemy boss ships such as the Imperial Star Destroyers really feel like boss ships, since they have numerous gun emplacements that can shoot you down, not to mention that their weak spots are hard to hit once you've downed their shields. The enemy dogpiles you with hundreds of TIE fighters and Interceptors, you have to protect allies such as capital ships from TIE Bombers that can easily blow them to hell, and you have to use different starfighter models like the X, Y, B, and A Wings to suit your mission parameters, from space superiority, to protecting allies, to attacking enemy capital ships. Playing for the Empire isn't all roses and daisies either, since when you fight for the Imperials, your allies are more numerous, but weaker than the Alliance starfighters, and said starfighters have thick shields and armor, meaning that you have to focus fire on them longer for them to drop. That, and since you play as Darth Vader, and your TIE Advanced is very different from all the TIE Fighters and Interceptors flying around, the Rebel pilots can tell that you're the leader, and they'll start dogpiling YOU. It really goes to show how different the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance are in the game, since both have drastically different playstyles. The Empire goes for quantity over quality, and the Rebels are the exact opposite, forcing you to change the way you fight. That kind of nuance is lost on most modern games where two opposing sides are nearly identical.
I remember when the new generation after PS1/N64 started and the Dreamcast and PS2 didn't do anything for me. Then I saw this game on the cube and my mind was blown. Not even the jump to HD has impressed me the same way ever since. And it's still looking good today, wow.
I don't have Component cables for my Gamecube but I do for my Wii. This game looks so good in HD even on the Wii. If you have Component cables and a backwards compatible Wii, play this in 480p, you won't regret it.
Stop holding the fire button!! You are meant to tap at it rhythmically to get the maximum amount of power with your shots (all four laser cannons firing simultaneously) with the minimum amount of wasted shots. You _need_ to be the Supreme Alliance Commander so you can get all the ships!
+Rob B. (driftin) Absolutely! This game is seriously a classic. Totally captured the feel of what was so great about Star Wars and the ships! Battlefront is no where near as close! Each ship had its own feel and the flying mechanics were much deeper than Battlefront which is embarrassingly shallow compared to Rogue Leader!
+Nathaniel Bixby Well I guess you could be right there. I hadn't thought of that. Yes, that was great too. Though I guess I was referring to the flying in Rogue Squadron where as Republic Commando was mainly a squad based shooter wasn't it? I remember really enjoying it!.
LOVED THIS GAME!!!! And as always, there were some hilarious cheatcodes out there. Nothing quite like bombing around through space in a pink '59 Cadillac de Ville. (I hope that wasn't from the original rogue squadron. LOL)
I still remember going to my local retailer and playing the demo-level over and over. It was the death star level, and it felt very much like being in the movie.
That was a really great review for one of the best games of all time. I picked mine up at a local flea market about 8 years ago. It is probably the best reason (there are many others too) to keep a Gamecube or Wii system around. You are right on the money when you call it "challenging." I also remember some frustration in the early stages. But hey. Your first mission is to blow up the friggin' Death Star. Great ships and graphics with fun story lines that tie in nicely with the real Star Wars we all know and love.
This game looks amazing for the time it came out. Wow, the shadows, the water fx! So much on screen, the artistry in this is just brilliant. I have to get it.
TheMedicalOfficer why lie ? I love his game and bought a wii for it but I'm not stupid enough to say the graphics are better than 360 . are you a nob ?
That's pretty cool! I watched my brothers play the original Rogue Squadron on N64. I wish I played it myself, but I was very hesitant about space shooting games back then. Both the original and this game look awesome! I wonder how good the 3rd Rogue Squadron is.
I'm amazed at how good the game still looks today. I don't know what's up with the licensing of this game (and the whole Rogue Squadron series for that matter), but there needs to be an HD collection or something. The gameplay and presentation was also spot on, it felt like Star Wars all the way. Most awesome Star Wars game ever.
The only nit I have to pick with the Gamecube 'Rogue' games is that all the music sounds like it was compressed through a midi synthesizer and played through a tin can. That aside, these games are absolutely brilliant.
Also interesting is that each of the fighters fly differently you have different handling speeds and weapons capabilities. Something that a lot of the newer games seem to be lacking is attention to details that are mentioned in all of the different technical manuals that they came up with over the years for all the fighters.
I remember reading that the reason that the game is so hard is that Factor 5 spent so much time on the game engine to make it as powerful and smooth as possible that the vast majority of the actual content of the game came together in the final 9 months of development. That's why the game is as hard as it is, they didn't have time to go back to properly iron out the difficulty spikes. Factor 5 totally spoiled Gamecube owners with this game though. It was a launch title and everyone was hyped to think that every Gamecube game would look this good.
This game was the reason I spent £600 importing a Gamecube from Japan. Felt like. bit of a twat when it was released in the UK for just over a ton. But still, that game was fucking awesome and still holds up today!! Why haven't we allowed Factor 5 to make a Rogue Squadron 3??
I can't believe this game is as old as it is. I still have my copy of both Rogue Squadron II and III. This is the game that sold the Gamecube system for me and is the best Star Wars space combat game outside of the X-Wing series. Nintendo, two things that will guarantee many a hardcore gamer purchase a Wii-U - commission a new Rogue Squadron (or similar SW sim) and Eternal Darkness 2.
You want to talk about value? Rogue Squardron 3 was a kick ass game and it even included all of Rogue Squadron 2 to play multiplayer in it. That blew my mind.
Never had a Gamecube but a few weeks before I got my Wii I bought this game so that I could later play it.Only time I've bought a game for a console I didn't own. Loved the game.
Still have mine on the trusty ol' Gamecube. Not forgetting the great features that the views for example on Tatooine training automatically change depending on what part of the day or night you play them, morning, midday, evening, and at night. Plus some games also change including the craft when playing either day time or at night.
I remember getting all the gold medals in this game and the third game in the series. I still remember "Rudy's Car" the Buick with the awesome cluster missiles.
Ooh, I hope he does a review of Rogue Squadron III sometime, the on-foot parts were kind of meh but the spaceship combat was better than ever. Plus it has Rogue Squadron II co-op and multiple multiplayer modes. But yeah, great review!
Wow, the game looks great being so old! I need a gamecube, or wii so i can try this game. The xwing series on computer was fun so this should be a blast.
Good game however it's almost impossible to get the rarest metals in the missions you seriously have to play like Luke sky walker to even have a slight chance
+starwars1744 Timed laser cannon bursts (ie not holding down the fire button), getting really good with either the A-Wing or the X-Wing's transformable wings (closed for better speed), and lots of repetition.
I saw this game at a store in 2003 for the local equivalent of $20. I didn't have a Gamecube back then, but now that I do I reall regret not buying it back then, as I'm looking to get one to this day.
I wish I wasn't totally strung out on depression and missing out on most of CGR's videos during the majority of its lifetime. Here I am back and healthy and CGR is done :(
INECOMCOMPANY: Thanks for all the great reviews! Whenever I think about games I've played or didn't get to play from the past I always check out your reviews first! I can then decide if I want to buy it or not! (Judging by the game play, graphics, fun factor, etc..)
I remember looking at Nintendo Power magazines (when they were good) for locations of the upgrades. Some of them were really hard to get to such as the upgrade at the end were you had to fly a ship between some bars while being chased by tie fighters or the fire from the reactor you blew up. It was a fun game growing up. Also trying to find upgrades for the third game was challenging too. There's so much to say about these two Star Wars games and not much room to youtube to type them all down :)
This and Wind Waker were the only reasons I wanted a Gamecube. Then I played other awesome games like Metroid Prime, Smash Brothers Brawl, and Mario Kart DD. I got my Cube years after it had already been out.
I know right? I didn't realize anyone disliked classic game room. I personally think his "cheezy jokes" have a great delivery and appeal to my "nerdy" side. And as far as anyone saying he has poor "research"? The thing about him is actually playing the games for so long is experience and experience puts "research" in the back seat everytime.
I have this one and I also have Rebel Strike. They are both very wonderful. Rebel Strike has this game included for Co-Op play which is cool how ever the main game it's self is beautiful I think you can even take down the Executor. Even the Rogue Squadron game for the Nintendo 64 is quite awesome Which sadly I don't have the N64 version. But when I start getting some funds in I am going to go get it.
I've never been a huge Star Wars person (I've only seen each film once or twice), but wookiepedia suggests otherwise. Midicholorians "allowed for a connection with the pervasive energy field known as the Force; in sufficient numbers, midi-chlorians could allow their symbiont organism to detect the Force, and this connection could be strengthened by quieting one's mind, allowing the midi-chlorians to "speak" to their symbiont and communicate the will of the Force."
Game Cube was actually a very powerful machine, no way PS2 could run this smoothly.
yeah the GC had way more under the hood than the ps2. Resident Evil 1 Remake is proof of that. and RE4. RE4 looked like trash on ps2.
MikePitcher So weird that Nintendo went from the most powerful system to the least.
CheetosForBreakfast xbox was more powerful than the gamecube
igorbog88 They were pretty identical in performance, The Xbox had higher specs but Gamecube had some features that outperformed Xbox..
damagejackal10 The xbox had simply better hardware with better specs thus the Xbox was more powerful than the gamecube, it's not a difficult concept to grasp.
This game is the reason I bought a gamecube recently. So good

From Factor 5 with love. Still playing to this day. Crazy that this was a launch title.

Yeah I remember clearly being blown away seeing Rogue Leader for the first time. It was a feeling I'll never forget.
I don't have Component cables for my Gamecube but I do for my Wii. This game looks so good in HD even on the Wii. If you have Component cables and a backwards compatible Wii, play this in 480p, you won't regret it.
Render this in full HD and it will still look like a modern game. They had to have used the Dark Side of the Force to craete these graphics
can now be played n 4k sooo yes.
Stop holding the fire button!! You are meant to tap at it rhythmically to get the maximum amount of power with your shots (all four laser cannons firing simultaneously) with the minimum amount of wasted shots. You _need_ to be the Supreme Alliance Commander so you can get all the ships!
The best Star Wars game ever made. The game that the brand new Star Wars: Battlefront wishes it was.
+Rob B. (driftin) Loved this game. Might need to find a copy and dust off the old GameCube!
+Rob B. (driftin) Absolutely! This game is seriously a classic. Totally captured the feel of what was so great about Star Wars and the ships! Battlefront is no where near as close! Rogue Leader is all about the content and the challenge. Battlefront ... just looks nice
Get a 1st gen Wii, component cables and enjoy this game in 480p. It still looks still amazing even today!
I remember first seeing gameplay of this and the graphics blew my mind. I still love messing with the cheat codes today
I had no idea the GameCube was capable of pulling off these graphics! Damn.
I remember this was my favorite game back when I was around 6 or 5ish. I still love it today. I spent so long playing it!
Hey man great review I just started playing this game tonight and after watching this you got me really hyped
I loved playing both rogue squadron 2 and 3 as a teenager and as a Star wars fan
I remember playing this at my buddy’s house as I kid... I miss him
That was a really great review for one of the best games of all time. I picked mine up at a local flea market about 8 years ago. This game was the reason why I bought my gamecube at launch. Excellent game! And excellent review :)
Imagine this now re released on the switch
This game looks amazing for the time it came out. Wow, the shadows, the water fx! So much on screen, the artistry in this is just brilliant. I have to get it.
I PLAYED THESE GAMES SO DAMN MUCH AS A KID! nostalgia... i love it
This, it's prequel, and it's sequel, Rebel Strike, my favorite of the three, was the Ace Combat of Star Wars.. awesome game.
Awesome game, I reviewed on the Wii a while back but I was rubbish at it 😂, nice content here dude, liked and subbed 👌🏻
The graphics look better than a 360s.
TheMedicalOfficer why lie ? I love his game and bought a wii for it but I'm not stupid enough to say the graphics are better than 360 . are you a nob ?
Ben Smith but is true. This game still looks incredible today and better than most early PS3 and 360 games.
@@retroboy-fh1ji halo 3 was early 360, halo 4 ran on 360, this looks good, doesn't look THAT good
The larger the TV you use the more 'blocky' the graphics look
Loved the end comment about the Force lol :D
Man, the Hoth battle were awesome, specially with 2 players, one driving and the other shooting the cables at the AT-AT's legs. Awesome. =)
That's pretty cool! I watched my brothers play the original Rogue Squadron on N64. I wish I played it myself, but I was very hesitant about space shooting games back then.

Most awesome Star Wars game ever.
There needs to be a trilogy anthology game for Rogue Squadron on the Switch, as well as the planned fourth game where you play as Darth Vader.
This game is from 2001 and still looks just as good, if not better than most games nowadays.
LCH_Entertainment hahahhahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahaha haha hahaha what a nob
Ben Smith It's "noob" noob.
just bought mine offline today. so excited to play it
The only nit I have to pick with the Gamecube 'Rogue' games is that all the music sounds like it was compressed through a midi synthesizer and played through a tin can.
That aside, these games are absolutely brilliant.
I just wish there was a Star Wars space simulator, similar to Star Citizen.
i miss this game. was so proud when i earned all golds (except that last endurance mission)
Why have i not seen this, this looks epic!
Man, but you are an enabler: just bought this and the follow-up, Rebel Strike, which are both pretty cheap. Thanks for posting up a great review.
Also interesting is that each of the fighters fly differently you have different handling speeds and weapons capabilities. Something that a lot of the newer games seem to be lacking is attention to details that are mentioned in all of the different technical manuals that they came up with over the years for all the fighters.
Walmart had this game on display back in the day and it blew me away when I first saw it.
Wow! It looks great. I will need to get a cube now!!
wow, the lighting looks awesome
A true classic. Thx for the memories...

Sorry I just realised they did a 3rd one. Need a fourth one without the ground troop levels!

Got this for my birthday when i was six. Great, great times
I have this game and even after 11 years since the GameCube launched, this game is still awesome!
its funny how a lot of the footage is of crashes
Play it and you'll realise why.
This game is great, a real CLASSIC. You can find it for around $5 used these days.
Definitely the best launch game for the GameCube
I was the one who sent mark this game i bought this game for 5 bucks on amazon just for him cause i love his reviews.
oh, what an awesome game! didnt play this for ages

I love this game! One of my favorite Gamecube titles.
I remember this game from when I was little!
One of my fav star wars game!
used to have this on gamecube.
best starwars game ive played yet.
The Original Rogue Squadron was my introduction to Star Wars. Now here I am, a fanatic who's favorate character is Wedge Antillies.
This game is so god damn hard.
Nah!
Wow, the game looks great being so old! I need a gamecube, or wii so i can try this game. The xwing series on computer was fun so this should be a blast.
Looks wicked!
I remember playing this when I was 8. That shut was hard!

This game is SO FUCKING HARD
just got this one and it's awesome

Awesome Star Wars game, one of my favorite GCN exclusives.
omg this looks impressive! top graphics
I owned this a while back when gamecube was popular and i loved it
I still play this game in 2020. It's awesome.
Me too bro
Luke Skywalker vs. Commander Shepard. Let's see it! Also the Normandy SR-2 vs. an X-Wing. Now that would be awesome. :)
