    This is my first try at making a laser-cut mechanical iris. Made from 3 mm plywood. The dowels are cut bamboo skewers.

    nice one of the simplest version of mechanical iris I have seen so far.
    one question though, there is an opening of hexagonal shape even if you completely close the shutters
    can we completely close it or its gonna be there?

    • @makerdesignlab3582
      @makerdesignlab3582  Před 3 lety +13

      Thanks! In this version, the little hexagon can't be closed. The reason is that I did not account correctly for the size of the ring on the end of each blade. When I realized this I did not want to resize all the gears and so just made the blades a bit smaller to prevent interference between them.
      It is possible to make a version that closes completely by either making the pins/ring smaller or by scaling up the other parts relative to the pins/rings.

    Really cool what laser did you use to cut the parts?

      Thanks! I used a Trotec Speedy at my local makerspace to cut the parts.

    How are these toys manufactured in large scale? I can understand the diy process. But on a large scale, I am not sure how they make it faster. Beautiful design by the way!

      You could make a master set, and use it as a template for silicone molds and cast resin
      or some low temp alloy like zamac and sand molds
      or cnc router to work an entire board of the parts
      or if you can afford it, get some machined dies and plastic injection, that will be expensive

    The idea behind an aperture is that the opening is only in the middle and circle shaped at best. The blades need to overlap or to hug each other to not have these openings in between.
