Just happened to the faction I'm playing on my server. It already was a smaller server and horde was in the minority but it was still possible to find dungeon groups, pugs and guilds. When they gave all servers free transfers guild after guild transfered away. Some guilds are still there but it's just so empty now. On the last day I decided I too will leave. I love my new server, there is so much life and activity there (more than there ever was on my old server) but it's still just sad.
Can relate to this, end of cataclysm / start of Pandaria everyone and his mother started to either go horde or left the server till the point our guild wasnt able to find a god damn dps to fill up the group.
The original server I was on transfered during p2 when balance got out of hand.. in phase 2 of tbc, a week before my sub ran out, the whole server decided to take the free transfer on a server that became 55/45 in favor of the opposite faction. And since blizzard doesn't make any faction transfers, more and more came over again and ended up in a 70/30 and worse. Now again, the whole alliance side transfers away because of the limited free transfer and the fear to just be stomped at wotlk release. This time a PvE server, because no matter how much people claim that they want world PvP, almost no one actually wants to fight on even numbers. The moment there is a slight unbalance, the server slowly shifts to a 70/30 up to 99,99/0,01.
Yeah, that's known issue in MMO. Our Aion localizer restricted such behaviour after some threshold by fraction locking any new player on server to less popular one till numerical balance was restored. But that still didn't mean that average player quality was balanced. So within some servers there was truce between fractions in terms of global resource control. When from 3 endgame citadels one fraction have 1, second fraction have another and third citadel goes from fraction to fraction every few weeks. Abyss was still free space. As it was still hard to capture all 3 citadels in 1 hour with PVP, usually it remained as 2/1 balance as well. And when some fraction had too many citadel for more time than they should, another fraction balancing mechanism enables by itself (not manually from devs, but automatically). It was PVP damage buff fractionwise (and quite a bit of a damage buff if i may say so). If situation still was dire, this buff had second stage with more pvp damage boost and pvp defence boost iirc. But i may have seen second stage of this buff only once in my life. And for world PVP... This was a main content, but largescale open world was rarely a thing, so fraction numerical difference wasn't as noticable there (hard to see numerical differ within 1v1)
This hits close to home. Just had to transfer off my home server Nethergarde Keep since everyone jumped ship with the free transfers. I've been playing on NGK since phase 2 of classic. Here's hoping Mirage Raceway doesn't suffer the same fate!

Im really looking forward to Blizzard merging realms. It's just not possible or hard to get groups going for something like instances. Always a healer or tank missing and the group is disbanding after half a hour. Hopefully it will get better if more players are on the same realm after the merge.
hoenstly. with the whole you can get the all the big servers for free now thing, i also transfered and it's been lifechanging. I found a group for ULDAMAN in about 4 minutes. A dungeon I never seen from the inside for 3 years.
Even in retail LFG also always lack of heal and tank, the most not fun job in game. Sometimes waited for like 15 mins, finally got a tank, if not a noob has zero experience then likely an egomaniac pull the first mob until the first boss.
I made a mistake getting into the game again a few weeks ago, in sept the already dwindling number on the server I happened to pick will most likely drop even more... no matchmaking dungeon groups this time around with LK so it matters if your on a dead server...
and that's why matchmaking needs to be a thing. the whole bs about server community being busted by the matchmaking is such a lame excuse. I see people talking and bonding in cities and out in the world all the damn time on both classic and retail, both with zone chats and one on one in person. Idk why "old school" veterans gotta glorify waiting hours for a damn group when you can slice that down to 20 minutes tops (roughly 45 during launch weeks if it's bad) with a queue system and make friends in the process. I've played since Wrath myself and I made more damn friends via matchmaking than anything else. Now that they're slowly stripping away faction separation limits in retail it's going to lessen the problem with unbalanced servers, and I'm so ready for it. I can't wait to play with my entire friend list without issue at last. people just don't seem to understand that all this stuff was implemented for a reason lol
EU Firemaw was the biggest tbc realm, had a quiet healthy mix between horde and alliance. As alliance was slightly in favor, a few top guilds decided to move to gehennas in order to avoid leveling and wg issues. This caused an avalanche and horde died within less then 24 hrs. Now it is a >90% alliance server. This happened like a few ago and kinda all happened within one evening.
I wish I was aware this happened. I had a character that I played for months until April on Firemaw and I loved the even faction balance and huge population. Then I stopped playing for a bit and renewed my sub on the 26th July just to find that all the horde population at left and I now had no one to play with. No idea why this happened, or why pvp players seem hell bent on only joining servers where their faction is dominant. Kinda defeats the whole point of pvp if there’s no one to fight :(
Imagine thinking firemaw was best server anytime time at all LUL noobs don't realize there is only gehennas, i wonder if firemaw ally would migrate if gehennas Ally gets somehow bigger and playable, firemaw was always that shit server none cared about, and Ally had to go there bcos no other server with any alliance playerbase going on. But like i said, its normal that noobs don't know that gehennas was and Will be top 1 server in these classic expansions, feels bad for ppl that go one and other following noob streamers, and then wonder why It doesnt end well

The end there is exactly why I'm staying on a low-medium pop realm. That and a few other reasons like less gold farmers and boosters and crap like that.
I don't understand why WoW doesn't just make a megaserver like ESO. They're both owned by the same company and WoW already has sharing/layering technology they can use for that server anyway. Also there's no freaking way it costs that much for a transfer, it's easily less than a dollar since it's probably don't automatically by the system not a real person.

Yee... servers are a seriously outdated concept. Unfortunately Blizzard won't do anthing about it and continue to apply bandaid fixes because it's more profitable to keep it as is and have people pay for server transfers than fix the actual problem.
The only thing missing is trying to do quests and never completing them because the other faction out numbers you big time and they are in multiple groups and spread out tagging everything.
Archimonde such a great release pvp server. killed by having three free transfers. Last two I dont even understand why, first one alone pretty much killed the server

There are less boosting ads in game now that they nerfed the xp you get from it. But you are right, it'll never be quite the same as it used to be.
