- The waters between San Francisco and Alcatraz, a former prison, are rife with urban legend. Some say the water is too dangerous for swimming, but Mitali Khanzodé, 16, and her sister Anaya, 12, see the water as a place to make and break open water swimming records. Anaya currently holds the record as the youngest person to swim the span of the Golden Gate Bridge, which was previously held by her sister. Although the waters can be rough and extremely cold, both sisters cannot imagine a life where open water swimming isn’t part of their weekly routine.

Yes its dangerous because of rip currents and sharks and such but that still doesnt stop people from doing it. And heck these girls have professionals watching over them. I dont see the big deal in worrying. Just make sure you're safe to do such activities.
We have held over 500 swims -- 0 shark bites. Kayakers and paddleboarders accompany us on every swim. There are always risks involved with any sport or physical activity, but as you mention, it can be very safe when there is proper support staff.
Yeah rip currents are nothing to swimmers. They are bit easy to get out of if u can swim and know to swim adjacently after spotting it

All you need to learn is how to float in deep water which is really easy so if you start to get tired float in the water which u have to move your hands and legs up and down and you won’t get tired of floating because it’s like you are relaxing

I jumped off the flagship in Galveston was hard to swim back because of the currents and hurricane was coming in and bringing in massive waves I threw my surf board in but it was tossed under broke on the reef and got away fast. Only reason I was not not torn up too was the waves were so high was only 1 story instead of three of four high. After doing this and almost sinking my jetski in the bay and swimming back. I knew it was possible. I saw sharks too but if your whole body is in they don't want you. The cold is anthoer factor though.
Y’all are mad crazy but also hella brave and I look up to these kids😂❤️ but y’all can’t call those prisoners that tried swimming out because these kids were trained once a week and ex-prisoners can only swim across a warm olympic sized pools a few times at best.

There are definitely sharks in San Francisco , especially Great whites. The thing is because great whites are endangered and their numbers are low encounters are extremely rare. Even then they hunt seals instead of people and have a migratory path from Northern California when the water is warmer.
