    With such strong entries into what is arguably one of the most competitive automotive segments in world, Audi looks to up its game with a completely re-engineered A4 for 2017. Although it may not look completely new at a glance, closer inspection will reveal an all-new chassis, improved powertrain, and one of the most tech-laden cabins in the industry. Those of you in the market for an incredibly well rounded luxury sport sedan should put one at the top of your list.

    I've driven this car (Quattro, Premium Plus with technology and sport package) for about a year now. I had the Google Earth for about 3 months before it disappeared. I was bummed to see it go, but honestly I don't really ever think about it until I watch five year old reviews and I'm reminded I used to have it. The outside door levers felt a little weird at first, but I don't even notice them anymore. Likewise the shifter or where the park button is, or the steering feel. It might take a week or two to get used to, but you'll never think about it again until someone brings it up. (My wife drives an Infiniti, and her controls are slightly different, but not so wildly different you'd ever be mad switching back and forth.) The 19-speaker sound upgrade is great, but I mostly listen to podcasts, so it's probably wasted on me most of the time. The Virtual Cockpit is cool, but the vast majority of the time, I just leave it with the normal gauges, unless I'm driving in an area I don't know very well, which isn't very often. I bought a wireless Apple CarPlay adapter for less than $100, which fixed the need to have a wired connection, which is also a huge upgrade to the usability of the infotainment, in my opinion. I used the paddle shifters for a week or two, but now basically let the car do what it wants, with the occasional move to dynamic mode, if I feel like going fast. I'd guess that's 95% of drivers looking at this.
    Focusing on the drivetrain, the power, the ride, the seats, the speed, the comfort... all the things that are going to matter after the first month, this is a really good car. I kind of wish I spent a little more to get the A5 Sportback, which I will probably look at next, but otherwise, I can't think of any reason to entertain the other German small luxury cars. The 3 series and the C-class just don't touch it. And the Japanese competitors might be less expensive to own, but they just aren't nearly as enjoyable to drive, and they just don't seem to have any soul. Which is fine, fi that's what you're into. Honestly, any time I have the car in for regular service and I drive a loaner (last one was a 2020 Q5, and the one before it was a newer A5) I am excited to get back into mine.

  • @glassacre
    @glassacre Před 8 lety

    The A4 has always been handsome (if understated) in its design, and that definitely continues here I think. It's probably perfect for those who want German luxury but to fly a bit under the radar. I applaud Audi for the updates to the interior as well as the engine. That said, for me personally, those dual screens are WAY information overload, and I consider myself a Techy. I like this sort of thing, just not while I'm driving. I think the center screen could probably be eliminated, and just leave the console 12" screen (which is gorgeous)...especially with the head's up display, too. I'm also not a fan of the shifter, though that seems to be something you could get used to over time. For all-out performance, I'd probably still go with a 328i, myself.

    Great video. I just test drove a 2019 A4 Premium Plus AWD, and there was a lot of engine hesitation upon initial acceleration. I drive a GTI with the same engine so I’m not sure if this is normal or not. I’m holding off on buying the car but the “turbo lag” or the hesitation was pretty pronounced under 20mph. Can you chime in and tell me if this is normal? I know you drive a lot of these cars and I’ve watched your videos for a long time and consider you a lot more knowledgeable than I am. Thanks.

      @@KoronaSaintLouis No problem! Maybe because its a dual clutch and not a torque converter automatic. Dual clutches are usually clunky at low speeds but when you push the car or when you want a quick couple of downshifts dual clutches are great

    2005 B6 A4 owner here. I can't help but feel the design language of today's Audi's has gotten dull, overly boxy, uninspired, and overwhelmingly cliche. Of course this is all subjective, but I feel that I can speak for many when claiming that the last gen q5, for instance, is far more of a head-turner than the most recent one. The interior of this A4 however, seems to be pretty upscale. Sat in one of these at NYAS, and it was a pleasure. But that flimsy little screen jutting out of the dashboard looks awkward and highly breakable. Nonetheless, I'll always be a huge fan of Audi. But in this regard, I hope the next generation goes back to its roots.

    Steering is lighter than 3 series, you don’t have to fight with the car like in a BMW. Driving position and seat adjustment is far superior to the Merc. Mercedes is too high and too close to the steering wheel, I felt like a pensioner driving it. Also it does look different, without losing its character.

During the virus time, I haven't even drive more than 5000km this year. We usually do some road trip to inland BC or to Settle for the long weekend. Miss those good quality time. I usually set my steering in Dynamic and Engine in auto, it give the steering more accurate when turn. But on Highway, probably comfort is the best no brainer setting.

    Question: Is there a function for speed-sensative wipers(Rainsense)? I noticed that you were shuffling with the wiper stalk frequently.
    Overall, a very great review!! You hit it on the nail. Audi's typical numb steering still plagues even it's newest cars, and I don't suspect the S4 to address, if the 2016 A6/S6 is of any indication. I also agree in the interior. Remember when Audi shamed Benz and BMW for years on interior build, quality, and materials? While still made very well, the C-Class has shown how to really do an excellent interior for this class(still hate the i-Pad on top of the dash, however!) But in terms of tech for the small lux class, the A4 has it! But for $51k, MB will happily sell you a C450 AMG w/ 4MATIC, and that is a tough proposition for Audi to overcome. Yes I know this a loaded A4, but the performance advantage and brand prestige that comes with the 450 is totally worth it!

      The ring that I was fiddling with on the wiper stalk adjusts the sensitivity of the rain sensing wipers. I found that in their automatic setting, they weren't wiping away the water on the windshield quickly enough for me. To be honest, I have yet to test a car with perfect auto wipers. Most require constant adjustment at least for me. Others may not notice it as much as me.

    I'm surprised with the arm rest on the door being all plastic. It's something I noticed in an S5 I was looking at not too long ago. You had to pay extra to get the door arm rest upholstered in leather. It's strange that they don't just include that on the prestige. To my knowledge, the BMW 3 series with leather seats specified comes with upholstered door arm rests. That being said, I'm sure this Audi is a benchmark car in its class.

    I’ve had the ‘17 A4 FWD and sold it less than a year because it didn’t have much pickup which I was shook cuz of its 190HP. So I went with an ‘18 AWD and the power is similar but you really have to punch it down which I hate. I like cars that have sensitive pedals. But my issue is with the driver seat. My AWD has sport seats and they are very uncomfortable and make my low back very stiff. The FWD seats weren’t as bad and had more cushion. I miss the previous seat :/

    Hey guys. I was looking to purchase (finance or lease, not sure which one) a 2016 or 2017 A4 around early 2018. I wanted to know what you guys think of that. What should I look for when buying this model or the 2016 model (fuel efficiency, maintenance, performance, etc). To me, fuel consumption is the most important so if any A4 owners could give me a review of this car, that'd be great!
