      He also replied something about “knowing the type” when Louis called Lestat a handsome devil, and at that point of the night he didn’t have to “pretend” to be into man. My guy had absolutely been involved with men for more than one night

    • @l.josino
      @l.josino Před měsícem +2

      Agreed! For all that they were a bit ambiguous and cagey about his sexuality before, with this episode it's undeniable he was attracted to Louis in San Francisco (literally offered to be his immortal companion by the end of the night, besides all that flirting he did from the first moment) and arguably is still a bit attracted to him in the present. When Louis made the offer to have sex with him, he didn't shut it down like a straight person would, it was just clearly a bit of a surprising/baffling thing to hear that also was said in a light enough manner to just go over it and choose to stay on the more pressing topic.
      I think present day Daniel told Louis he only had sex with men for drugs/journalism in s1 for 2 reasons. 1st because it's likely something he left behind in his life, like it was a libertine/hedonistic habit along with the drugs (kind of like "being gay in college") and he mostly saw it as a behavior with a convenient excuse for it rather than an actual bisexual identity (to have serious relationships). I mean, look at the time period. 2nd reason I believe it's because he doesn't want Louis to know how charmed he actually was by him. Daniel thinks, to this day, that he and Louis had sex, a very intimate 10 hour conversation, and then that Louis tried to kill him haha. So it's more comfortable not letting Louis know how much he was actually seduced by him before being "duped"

    I’m not convinced that this was the only instance of Armand manipulating Daniel’s mind and life. Louis has been playing F off and find me, so maybe Armand goes tit for tat on occasion, and maybe he pays Daniel visits. 😬

    • @white_finch
      @white_finch Před 2 měsíci +12

      It can also be that for a while Louis and Armand had broken up and for that time Armand and Daniel had a thing going on, there was the Alice thing earlier this season and Armand's ability to scramble people's memories could be the reason why Daniel remmembers Armand as Alice

    I think Daniel's sexuality is a bit more complicated than "is he or isn't he". He seems to have repressed it, but I get some queer vibes from him. Either he's gay or bi or pan, and the girl with paper bag on her head was a cruel way to loose his virginity because that's what's expected from him or either he just did have sex with men "for his career and addiction" because he wasn't brave enough to be openly queer, even though he went to gay bars. He did have two marriages with women and even had daughters, but... Y'know, closeted men amiright...

    This was honestly my favorite episode of the show. Yes, Maven, I know the LeStat factor was low, so forgive my sins! In my view, and please no one cancel me here, I know Armond is a manipulative monster here, but I found myself empathizing more with him. Louis calling him "boring" was just a lash-out, and moreover calling some random stranger exciting and fascinating when Louis spent the whole interview whining about his own past is a bit much. At least Armond's anger is coming from somewhere even if he does horrible things with it. On the whole, their fight was the most honest character moments the show has had so far, and I loved it! Also, a quick shout out to the performance of both actors who play Daniel!

    • @possiblymaybe6711
      @possiblymaybe6711 Před 2 měsíci +3

      Yeah it’s really hard to sympathize with Louis when he knew since Paris that he isn’t into Armand yet has him calling him master for how many decades ? Manipulating Armand’s trauma to have him serve him while he really felt nothing towards him. Armand isn’t boring either so he’s only saying that bc he’s just not into him. Imagine spending decades worshipping someone you love but he’s just using you as a foot stool reminiscing on his love for someone he wishes could replace you with. He should’ve given everyone in a 50 mile radius a lobotomy

    Given your continued (and very welcome) breakdowns of adaptation vs. source material format, I'm sure that I echo your fanbase when I say that I'd LOVE to see you revisit the 90's film and do a comparison. Your last review of it (if memory serves) was a decade or more ago and I don't THINK that it included a book comparison. I'd love to see how it compares. Maybe even a book vs. series vs. movie since these two seasons seem to be covering the same ground as the film!

    I had a feeling Armand was behind these gaps in both Daniel's and Louis's memories. Again, Louis called Armand the love of his life, yet here in the flashback, he calls Armand *boring* for chastising him over attempting the original interview, while the hours Louis has had with Daniel was *fascinating.* Of course, this could be just due to the effects of the drugs in Daniel's blood Louis just drank, but we can see that his life with Armand wasn't so happy as they display in the present day. For someone who wanted Louis to be his Dom in their dom-sub relationship, this declaration was enough for Armand to take control of the situation via his jealousy and his want to control Louis during his more traumatic vulnerable moments. He pushed Louis's buttons to trigger his PTSD over Claudia and Paris, and after Louis nearly torched himself from attempted suicide, Armand became the pseudo caretaker to Louis, like someone with Munchhausen syndrome by proxy. He's willing to reach out to Lestat to ease Louis in his suffering, but Armand's unwilling to tell Louis that Lestat loves him because again, Armand wants Louis to himself; to be his sole source of reliance in his time of need, whether he wants it or not, as we see Louis protest to hear anything from Lestat.

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Před 2 měsíci +6

      I don't think he reached out to Lestat to ease Louis in his suffering at all. I think reaching out to Lestat made Louis suffer more. Armand did it to prove to Louis that he doesn't actually want to be with Lestat, that Lestat=more suffering. When Armand gave Louis the opportunity here, Louis rejected Lestat. So now Louis realizes how he really feels, that he doesn't want connection to Lestat, and so he'll stay with Armand. Armand already knew that was how it would go and was calling Louis's bluff to just put a final ending to this question of whether or not Louis actually would want Lestat and the madness back at this point.

    The, using vampire blood to hide bite marks, is a thing in the show! Lestat does it to Louis after they have sex in season 1/episode 1. Lestat takes a "little sip" from human Louis and once they lay back on the couch you see Lestat prick his finger and wipe it on Louis neck and it heals!
    Maybe they left Daniels bite mark the same reason they left him with the knowledge of vampires, for a purpose later on. Because if they were already wiping Daniels mind they could have just wiped it all up until they left the bar.

I really enjoy how you compare the series to the books as you notice the little details and nods to the book that I miss which makes the series more rich. Just watching this and now and how they skirt over the Devil's Minion storyline, I have this niggling thought that Daniel will become a version of David Talbot if this series continue. This is because there is no David in Mayfair witches, and he has a connection with Raglan James and it would make sense for him to be the archiver of vampire history.

I really enjoyed last night’s episode but when I saw the scene where Louis goes up to the roof and tries to end his life, I panicked a little thinking it was way too early (story wise) for that to happen. And I know the producers said they were doing the interview having in mind many of the chronicles but still it caught me off guard. Do do you think the writers should’ve kept the ‘Louis-exposing-himself-to-the-sun’ storyline from Merrick as a subplot for a future season where we don’t get much Louis action or do you think it better for them to pick up events at random from the different chronicles and pepper them around the future seasons??

    I'm 99% certain that they will revise the Devils Minion storyline in future, I don't know how, but I'm almost sure they will, because they've teased us so much with it and, right now, at that point of the story, Armand just let Daniel go -albeit at Louis' request- after his four days of nightmarish captivity, and they have the rest of the drug-hazed 70s to mock about before Daniel "gets his life together" and marries Alice. Also, Eric Begosian, when asked to say one truth about this season, said "Armand and Daniels relationship was deeper" and I don't know about you lot, but I think k*dnappin and t*rt*ring a poor bloke does not add much depth to a relationship, unless something else might come later...

    Tbh, Armand could probably easily be lying about why he keeps bringing Lestat up himself, he could be pointing fingers at Louis about Louis not being over Lestat literally just as an excuse to justify getting away with continually bringing Lestat up himself specifically because Armand is the one who's actually obsessed and fixating on Lestat-and they could have turned Lestat into 'he who shall not be named' specifically because Louis was sick of Armand constantly obsessing over Louis' alleged fixation on Lestat and gaslighting Louis into thinking it was all Louis' fault and just snapped and made them swear off mentioning Lestat altogether. Lol
    But, yeah, maybe they just want Armand to be more sympathetic since they have to set viewers up to want to keep revisiting Armand again in other parts of the story too.

      It was the studio not Anne she was very much against the idea, but was only hired to write the screen play so she wrote both versions of the screenplay like she was told studio were worried that it was too gay, I think Anne ended up saying that the only way it would work with a female Louis was if the got Cher for the part knowing Cher wouldn’t do it

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Anne originally wanted to make Louis a woman in the novel because Louis was HER, but she knew no one would take the book seriously as literature if it had a female protagonist. It would be dismissed as romance or women's fiction, not Real Literature. So she made him a man. But by the time they were getting ready to make the movie, she had hopes that maybe the world was finally ready to take a woman-led story seriously and did consider Cher for the role (Cher even put out a song for the character before they decided not to use her. Look up Lovers Forever). But as we see, even in 2024, female-led movies still bomb compared to male-led ones, so they ended up keeping Louis a man so that audiences would give the movie more respect and not just dismiss it as a chickflick.

    To think that these ghost stories of Rice's could inspire such a treasure trove of analysis(not to mention unabashed and seemingly limitless hero-worship of Anne Rice) by someone as intelligent as the Maven.Now, I like scary stories as much as the next person, and these Chronicles are some of the best ever written, I could never compare them in importance with even "The Sun also Rises" By Hemingway or even a short story by Faulkner. Someone queried me as to the definition of "serious fiction" in the comments section a while back. Read Hemingway or Faulkner and you will know why Rice was not considered, for all her virtuosity, a "serious" fiction writer. The two authors mentioned above won the Nobel prize for literature, by the way and Rice was never even considered for that prize, nor, I believe, has any other genre writer.

    I mean, tbf, we don't know what "of course he has, he's a journalist" means to Bogosian-maybe Bogosian thinks journalism is the most obviously bi thing ever. Some people do have weird ideas like that. You also have to be aware that they are likely being deliberately cagey, I'm sure, about any answers they have been told are off-limits spoilers(even if it's a well established fact in the books, it can still be considered spoilers to confirm it too early whether or not they are actually going to go that particular route or not for the tv series; especially since they are likely trying to preserve some sense of prospective mystery or surprise for any tv viewers who have not read the books)-and/or the actor may or may not know literally all the plans for future seasons yet, if the showrunner's even have it all planned out yet themselves. So they may be giving deliberately vague or misleading interview answers, just to try and keep viewers guessing or unsuspecting until they finally do decide to take things in that direction at last. If they want Daniel to start out deep in denial, and then gradually be awakened out of his shell/closet/whatever similarly to how Louis was, (or maybe he's not in denial, maybe he just doesn't openly admit it to other people, since he had an image or public persona to preserve before the world got a little more liberal so now it's just a habit still) that's not necessarily entirely off the table just because of what they say in public interviews before they're ready to make certain details confirmed and public. (Possibly, he could just be lying to these vampires specifically in order to try and seem less potentially vulnerable to experiencing the same draw as they are lamenting to him about having experienced when they met Lestat.) Or maybe the tv show's creators just want to give representation not only to gay men (like Louis) but also to "gay for pay" and/or situational s*x*al behaviors since it is often entirely possible for the body parts to still function even in true incongruity with the mind's actual orientation. The mind can, in fact, be completely turned off and the body might in fact actually still respond to certain stimuli just the same. Or maybe that's all just me taking wild shots in the dark and it's none of the above. 🙃🤔🤷🤷‍♀️🤷🏻‍♂️ 😁😁 Lol

It could be they have some insane DM affair that Armand hides from the bed ridden Louis and then, for whatever reason (Daniel’s overdose?), wipes Daniel’s memory of the whole thing. I'm just taking a largely Wait-and-See philosophy approach with everything we will or won't get in the tv series, myself. Until it stops airing. They could still do just about anything at any time, including complete retcons; may be more or less likely, in many cases, but theoretically they could(whether they actually will or not). (I mean, we also technically still don't quite know exactly what all has or hasn't happened after Louis and Armand left Daniel to believe he just had a really bad trip or whatever, and we now know it's entirely canonically possible that things could have happened and they have absolutely no recollection of it and/or even believe other things happened entirely than what actually did.)

    • @MavenoftheEventide
      @MavenoftheEventide  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I don't think it's entirely canonically possible at all. Considering it wasn't possible that Daniel had no recollection of the memories Armand erased in 1973. He DID have recollection of them. Just being around Armand triggered those memories to start to come back even before he knew who Armand was. So if there were more suppressed memories, those would be flashing in his mind too just as much as the other ones have been. I really do think what he remembered in episode 5 was the all of it.

    • @jaginaiaelectrizs6341
      @jaginaiaelectrizs6341 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@MavenoftheEventide (I'm going to preface this first by saying that I'm kinda getting the impression that you and I are sort of using "no recollection" in slightly different ways, here-you seem to mean "no recollection" as in if the memories had been completely cut out and nothing ever could have brought them back unless somebody else had re-planted them back into his mind again much like they had been taken out of it in the first place or something, but I just mean that he clearly did not have any _conscious_ [or knowing] recollection of them and had personally believed that something else entirely had happened back then instead of initially being consciously and/or knowingly aware in the tv series' beginning of that first interview having even been what happened to him back then in the '70s or whenever at all....until after Louis sent him those tapes and invited him for a second go at it. Although it is a little hazy for me exactly how much he did or didn't really remember or not at precisely which points throughout the tv series, since it's difficult to tell what he or other characters are and aren't for sure always being deliberately cagey about just to keep things defensively close to their own vests or whatever versus what they just legitimately don't know or don't remember at certain points until it later on eventually pops back in for them in some how or another.)
      I think he only for sure always recollected the bit that was never suppressed to begin with, the part when "the burned man"(Louis) told him he had something really special in him and to make something of his career(or whatever), if I remember things right-because he put that particular bit in one of his books published at some point after the first interview but before the second interview had even started. And I suspect that particular part may or may not, in fact, even have been deliberately *made* to be remembered by him specifically thanks to a deliberate vampire-design(much like the other memories were also made to be forgotten by a deliberate design).
      When the second interview first started, he allegedly didn't even remember that the first interview had happened in the slightest. Even in season 2, Louis kept checking in with him and asking him on and off again if or what he remembered about that first interview or not.
      The other parts also, clearly, did not I think literally all just start coming back to him all at once either-it came back only in scattered bits and pieces and only as certain specific triggers brought certain bits or pieces forward and/or as various other details eventually got scrutinized more and more closely and things eventually just stopped adding up the way they had previously been believed by him to or to-not have happened and then he started deliberately doubting/questioning things even more precisely because of that, but even then those bits and pieces still often seemed to need the other various scattered bits and pieces that came back to Louis too in order to make full/proper sense of it and fill the whole entire picture back in completely(I think he really didn't seem to be walking through it with Louis exclusively just to get Louis' recollection on the same page as his own and what he had already totally remembered or figured out all for himself, until the very very end when he wanted to convince Louis it wasn't just him whose memories about it had been tampered with and not merely eroded or repressed by time or trauma or whatever else).
      He started to remember certain things even before he consciously knew who Armand was, yes, but he didn't start to remember just because he saw Armand's face; if I recall the first season correctly, it took multiple episodes before he remembered having seen Armand too back when he first met Louis and it was other things starting to make him suspicious of Armand's alleged identity and/or specifically talking about how he had met Louis the first time itself that triggered it, and even then he still didn't seem to immediately think it was for sure an actual memory until much later on(and it took multiple episodes into season 2 before he remembered anything more than simply having seen Armand's face before too unless I'm misremembering here). ((I have also always kind of questioned whether or not he really even just spontaneously remembered that particular detail entirely all on his own or not or if maybe it was actually Armand(or perhaps even someone else off-camera we the audience haven't been made aware of yet) who purposefully caused him to first remember seeing Armand too back when he met Louis that first time, perhaps just to unsettle him(or for who knows what other possible reason), perhaps without actually intending it to bring anything else back right along with it too.))
      I think what we saw in episode 5 is probably everything that happened during and immediately after that very first interview, yes; but I don't think that if there were any other later encounters with vampires not directly tied to that specific event or period in time that it necessarily is so obvious or definite that it really would have just all begun already coming back to him at all too just because that one particular event has, and if I remember it right he has also hinted that there were other times/moments in his life where things had "gotten really bad" or whatever like that and such similarly to when/how he had believed they'd "gotten bad" for him when he had first met Louis(but he previously thought he'd just gone to a dark-dark place and ended up on a really bad bender which he was lucky to have survived or whatever) and I think he has implied previously that there was a point in time when that was a relatively more regular or normal occurrence for him & he has more recently I believe even just in episode 5 implied that even well after the first interview he had still occasionally fallen off the wagon like that again from time to time just eventually perhaps slightly more infrequently.
      But, yeah, of course that doesn't necessarily mean there for sure actually were any other forgotten events or moments that will eventually come back to him too either-I think it is still possible that there could be, but maybe that's just me and of course there might not be anything else still left to recall at all and maybe anything more or further than that really will all be left only for possible future storylines and/or maybe just never even be introduced into the tv series whatsoever. Only time will tell, for sure. 🙂
      ( Really sorry if this is all extra rambling and just mush and difficult to parse any real sense out of, or whatever, though-it's like 80+° F in my house currently, and my brain/coherency is maybe not quite as tightly woven or clear as it could be, right now. 😅😅🙏🙃😅😶 )

    I dunno if we were supposed to take the hands chopping thing literally or personally, or more just as a reference to the fact that Louis _knew_ Armand was giving him a carefully curated performance that sometimes slipped out of character rather than the fully real Armand(or maybe to the fact even if Armand has never done those things to Louis, Louis still knows that Armand is capable of it and/or has done it to other people, or is just forever paranoid because of Lestat's behavior just always expecting any vampire he's with to just completely snap and turn on him one day when he least expects it if he doesn't keep his guard up). And Armand is upset/offended by this because it was LOUIS' who was so extremely gunshy about being with Armand under any condition other than with this facade firmly in place because otherwise it was all accusations of being exactly like Lestat unless Armand was so careful not to ever doing anything that could even remotely possibly construed as anything like something that Lestat would do(or because Louis is just projecting again and them and their relationship can simply never fully get out from under that shadow of Lestat hanging over their heads). Who knows.
