  • What matters most the lens or the body?
Let's run a little experiment to see. I put the Sony a7ii and the Sony a7iii against each other where both cam uses the Kit lens and the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. Can you see the difference.

I actually like all of these. The A7iii has a bit of an advantage since there is more room to play with the color grade in slog-3. What do yall think?

The a7 III is the far superior video camera, and not just because it's 4K. It just holds onto fine detail better because it supersamples 4K from a 6K image instead of being line-skipped for 1080p. That's not to say the a7 II is BAD, but the a7 III is just on a whole other level.
If I were filming myself on either camera and I didn't need every last photon of light, I would stop the lens down to f5.6 or so to give the autofocus an easier time...or just put it in manual focus and leave it.
Then again, if I were filming myself / vlogging, I would not want a full-frame camera.

Great concept for the video! I legit was debating with myself last week as to whether I should upgrade to A7iii or just get a lense or two. Ended up buying more lenses. Would be cool to see you use these 4 setups in other settings besides recording yourself at home (landscapes, portraits, etc). Love your channel keep up the good work.

Let's not forget that the Tamron lens is faster, so you could shoot it at f2.8 to show that difference as well.
That just gives you a lot more creative freedom, especially at the long end. Primes are great, but a good f2.8 zoom in full frame that you can actually shoot wide open is probably shallow enough for depth of field. Anything faster, and you end up doing eyelash photography.
I love my f2.8 zooms in Micro Four Thirds and rarely use my primes. Even those are fast enough for me most of the time.

hey man, I need your help, i can find sony a7ii on sale with kit lens for $1000. is it good for still photography or should I wait to gather more money to get a7iii?

I just bought an A7II. I’m new to the whole camera thing and tried doing some research and budgeting and the A7II is what I chose. I also bought a Sony E PZ18-50mm and a Sony FE 50mm. Not sure if I made the right choice. Let me know if I did or didn’t and what other things I might need.

Depends on what you plan to use it for. I started my journey last year with the A6000 and a couple of primes. I am satisfied with the image quality with the primes on but I do find the AF and tracking much slower and than the newer models. I have a toddler running around the house.
How has your experience been with the A7ii? Personally, I'd find the 50mm a bit tight. My Sigma 30 F2.8 is a 45 mm equivalent. I also have the Sigma 56 which is toughly 83 mm equivalent for family portraits.

Hi BWise! I have an issue with my a7ii:
When I turn it on it shakes and makes a strange noise, like a kick from the inside of the camera. And when I turn it off it makes another little shake and sound, but smaller than the first one.
Is it the ibis? The sensor cleaning? I don't think it's normal

    • @samalmahanama8155
      @samalmahanama8155 Před 3 lety +2

oooh...The camera is mapping out hot pixels on the sensor by taking an exposure with the shutter closed. It occurs approximately once per month. Also sensor cleaning would be way more pronounced. @samaltakespictures

That quality transition at 3:02 was very obvious. Better color science, better autofocus with nearly 6 times the number of autofocus points, 4K 30, nearly double the battery life, and dual card slots. The list goes on. Generally speaking, like you said if you’re a hobbyist, the A7 II is a great camera. But. . .if you make money in photography or filmmaking the A7 III is an investment worth making. That or the A7C.

I would say there is a slight upgrade in the picture from the ii to the iii but I think that could mainly be due to the better autofocus. I’ve been in the same boat lately wanting to upgrade from my a6300 to the a7iii but just can’t really justify it at the moment.

    • @JustBWise

yeah AF is a big difference when it comes to these cams. but there is a bit of a difference color depth and dynamic range. but who cares about all that camera jargon. lol😅

The A7III seems a little better in those short clips.. Did you find the A7III auto focus was alot better with a lot of movement? Sometimes that's what I struggle with when i try to take a quick shot of my daughter playing. I would like to get the A7III but I'll probably wait for the price to drop when the A7IV comes out.

Bruh. It was way better when shooting photos it keeps focus like crazy. Video is also pretty awesome when shooting in 1080p but 4k is not as great but still pretty good. I hope this thing actually goes on sale, cause I will be right there with you.

You're testing with video. The A7ii video is basically trash irrespective of AF because it uses line skipping rather than pixel binning.
I had the same problem with the A7ii (want quality video, no have money) and just bought a video centric but cheap Sony second hand - the A6300. The video quality hasn't changed much since the A6300 (at least for the 8bit video models), plus you save a ton on the gimbal (you can use the Crane M2 with a6xxx, and that's far cheaper than the full frame versions, esp if you go second hand as its an old, plentiful model). That gimbal can also power the A6300 so issues with a6300 battery life for video go away.
A cool thing with the Sony models after the A7ii is that they shoot 6k down-sampled to 4k (but they only do this for 4k). That means in video you can use around clearzoom x1.3 without affecting video quality (i.e. you only start to see moire and other effects if you get close to 1.5), so a typical video lens (Sony 10-18) now goes up to almost 24mm 'for free'.

I completely agree about the auto focus. Also this is some good info about the other Sony cams. Thanks for sharing.
