The reason for taking it down is perfectly valid; the 'end of fascism' or whatever other crap you want to ascribe to the photo isn't reason enough to grab a woman and kiss her and have the image romanticized for generations to come.
If we don't want confederate flags and statues flying their freak, neither should an image depicting an act that is definitely sexual assault be romanticized.
All the other commentary about the VA having worse problems is just a red herring argument, they don't have those problems because they are taking down a photo and if the photo had stayed up, they'd still have those problems. So, one issue has nothing to do with the other.

Notice each person has one arm fully in, And one hand closed around a mystery.

That 1945 photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt of the kiss in Times Square is one of the most beautiful, most iconic photos of the 20th Century. Just imagine the flood of raw human emotions that men and women were experiencing that glorious day on V-J Day. The modern activists/critics who want to remove this piece of history on the grounds that this was “non-consensual” are, I hope and pray, an extremely tiny minority. Honestly, when you put this photo in its proper context of that moment in time, how can you look at it and not feel joy inside?

My parents were from this era. My dad was in the Navy and was in WW II. I was adopted by older generation parents. I find nothing offensive about this pic. We must stop looking at this type of thing from today's perspective. This was an innocent act
and even though it was two strangers what it symbolized was the end of a very important time in our history. I think the person wanting to have this removed is projecting their own issues. Leave this alone. Yes deal with the sexual harrassment that is prevelant in the armed forces but don't take an innocent historic photo down because you think that it sends the wrong message. We would never have a photo like this now because it wouldn't fit the narrative but back then when most of us saw this and for me it was years after the fact it symbolized something iconic. Don't ruin that because of your own personal issues.

about Greta Friedman: “I felt that he was very strong. He was just holding me tight. I'm not sure about the kiss... it was just somebody celebrating,” Friedman told Redmond. "It wasn't a romantic event. It was just an event of 'thank god the war is over.'” ... "Ms. Friedman did not shy away from the photo or her role in it, her son said. Mr. Friedman said he believed she understood the argument that it was an assault but did not necessarily view it that way." ... "Friedman told the Library of Congress in 2005 that “it wasn’t a romantic event. It was just an event of thank God the war is over kind of thing.” She added in an oral history of the photo: “It wasn’t my choice to be kissed. The guy just came over and kissed or grabbed.” Since she was ok with it, ok. If not, different story.

I hear what Whoop is saying about addressing really dire things that have happened to our female Vets and I align most with what Sara mentioned about how the two people pictured remained friends after the photo was taken. I would defer to the lady being kissed and get her perspective above all us. (I understand she is no longer with us, but if she was still alive, I would get her in on the conversation before taking the photo down.)

wow these women finally said something that actually makes sense. and the picture is iconic also we had different sensibilities back then. it's like the veterans administration is doing the bait and switch, it's like they address a non-issue the same like they're doing something to get away from the real issue. Americans need to hold the government accountable. no veteran should have to grovel for health care there shouldn't even be or rather there shouldn't even be a need for organizations like the wounded warrior project, because the government and government contractors like McDonald's Douglas Raytheon and a myriad of other corporations should supply prosthetics and chip in for the medical cost there shouldn't even be medical cost for veterans nothing should ever be itemized on a bill when it comes to their health care that is the least they are owed. they should have the best of the best of the best. they should have counseling they should have medicine medical care physical rehabilitation and a stipend to live off of that you can actually live off of. but how do you justify spending over a billion dollars on a bomber and millions and millions of dollars on smart bombs but you can't take care of a veteran amputee? that is ridiculous when you think about it so all they get is a thank you for your service. That's what you get when you get your legs blown off when you lose an eye you get a thank you and a pat on the back, prostitutes get more than that, and I'm not even being funny. these guys and gals and a lot of situations are actually true heroes to one another and to be ridicued and dogged out by the VA is just unacceptable and cruel. you got to remember that a lot of these young men and women enlisted at 17 and 18 years old right out of high school, and for 3 to 6 years however long they're deployments that's their life that's all they know until they come back out into the real world and if they are injured, this is what they have to look forward to? anyway I usually hate the view, never want to hear anything they have to say they are repungent, they suck. but I actually agree with him this time and thank you the view.
