Mandel wrote an intriguing score for John Boorman’s first American film Point Blank from 1967. The main title has a somber and melancholy passage for trumpet that fits the character of the troubled Walker played by the great Lee Marvin.
A remarkable composer and arranger, who composed some extraordinary film music. My personal favorite song of his is "A Time for Love" from the movie AN AMERICAN DREAM. It's dreamy!
"The Shadow of Your Smile" was my father's favorite love song. He would play it on his acoustic guitar for my mother all the time. I totally agree that Johnny was highly underrated.
This man is a genius. The "Too Close For Comfort" track is tear jerking good to me. The song sound so beautiful and its also very funky. How Mr. Mandel combined Beauty with funk is simply amazing. GENUIS!!!!
The discerning mind truly makes an enormous difference in bringing beauty into this world. Johnny Mandel is a genius in this way -- he was able to hear the distinctions and consequently he brought that keen understanding into the act of creation. Hooray for us that we have him.
Mr Mandel may not have been a virtuoso pianist on the order to Michel Legrand. But to hear Mandel play even a few measures from Shadow of Your Smile … stunningly moving
News breaking is Maestro Mandel has left us. He's now working on new charts for whoever was his god. He was a wonderful talent and I've had some many hours of pleasure listening to his compositions and arrangements. Fare thee well, friend.
A sadly underrated composer. Johnny didn't conduct his own music; Miles Goodman, his relative, usually did. I particularly love 'The Shadow of Your Smile' from "The Sandpiper", which Mandel referred to as 'The Sandpaper'.
@@arongunner1522 Use of the word 'song' is incorrect, insofar as it's a work without words [which a 'song' is dependent on]. I played it only yesterday, not that it's any of your concern.
His music is amazing. I only wish I could find his soundtrack to Deathtrap. Truly amazing. And "what a little moonlight can do", simply beautiful. an incredible talent.
Jim Brown. I also love "Emily". My Grandmother was named Emily but I never knew her because she died early nearly 20 years before I was born and my Dad never talked about her, but I like to think that she was as lovely as that song.
I watched "The Americanization of Emily" on the big screen when it first came out and fell in love with the main theme (I didn't remember anything about the plot), which became "Emily." So did Zoot, and Al, and Bill Evans, all of whom played it until the end of their lives. Johnny Mercer wrote a lovely lyric, the definitive version of which I heard (and recorded) Jackie Allen sing, with John Campbell on piano, in a Chicago club around 2005.
I have no idea to why this man isn't more recognised. I cried at "suicide is painless", it hit me hard through really tough time. I'm glad to know he's still alive at the age of 94. Thanks for everything john. Sorry for the randomness i'm just in a daze.
i came here from michael buble's dream. didnt know the maker of the song was an actual composer who does a huge bunch of music. nowadays with younger artists, we dont see this. there are more individual artist than an orchestra of musicians. so cool!!!
Johnny points out the value of taking lessons with an established master. Those teachers can cut through the BS and explain things to where some student with talent can have the "light bulb" come on and, .... there you go.
RIP, good sir. 94 years was a hell of a run.

I studied trumpet with Don Rheinhard also, but I only got to play with Johnny once.. what an honor.. I hope he liked me. John.

@@alexkije First off, learn how to spell, besides making churlish statements such as 'you just don't know'.
John was an arranger for Michael Jackson's Will You Be There song.

"See with your ears and hear with your eyes"
So true.
Thank you! 🙏
Genius
Sea Dream is my favorite of his.
Mandel's arrangement of Kris Kristofferson's tune.
A Reinhardt student! Trumpet!
Rest in peace, sir!

It's part of the score from The Sandpiper - (which also featured The Shadow of Your Smile)
