The tarot card that Melanie represented here is the ten of swords. Which means a painful but necessary ending of something that is hurting you, mostly emotionally. it means ending, ruin, collapse, severing ties, goodbyes. which will lead you to an inevitable change. you literally have to come back from the dead after that card. It's a card for the painful endings. Amazing symbolism Melanie!

I don’t believe she wanted to quit being crybaby of great desire but out of necessity because the whole aesthetic and theme was holding her back creatively. Crybaby wasn’t easy to let go of, the character is likely a most beloved creation, but it was time to do something different. You can still see bits of crybaby in the new fairy creature and I think it means not becoming someone new but rather improving upon what’s already there.

In the song “Crybaby”, it says “You’re hearts too big for your body, that’s why it won’t fit inside” and her heart was not in her body, which means her heart was taken out and she died. The grave said “RIP Crybaby” meaning that she died and she’s back from the dead from the song.
I think Melanie’s songs is about “Crybaby’s” life as the Crybaby album is about Crybaby’s early years, K-12 is her teenage years, and Portals is about Crybaby’s afterlife as she is reborn as something else. Her unreleased album, Medieval Dynasty, is probably about her as an adult but got cancelled/delayed due to leakers.
Let's not also forget the RIP crybaby on the mushroom by the grave! She's also absolutely done with that era.
this album is peak art. i feel so many things through this journey of visuals and music. just an amazing addition to the world of music that is going down in history.
in the k-12 movie, the angel says to melanie, “you will have many bodies after this.”. so DEATH is her rebirthing into her new body, melanie didnt go in the portal and t the of the movie , so her friends though she died and made a grave for her.

Actually, in a TikTok talking about the release of void, it was revealed that she wrote the whole album off of hypnotherapy type themes and the cycle of life and death. (Or something very similar)

I made 2 theories about the music video
1. I think the bunnies and animals that surrounded Melanie at her grave were same ones in mad hatter
2. Remember in K-12 when Crybaby and Angelita were guessing what their past lives were and they guessed conjoined twins,I think that now,they are conjoined twins. (I was inspired by a shorts vid to make the 2nd theory)
Also death is tarot can mean a re-birth in some situations. Which fits quite well for this!!

My guess as to why she said that is because Crybaby has had many bodies/forms before. In K-12 I think during the scene when Crybaby was in the field of flowers in that pink bubble outfit. Lilith said that Crybaby and her friends are immortal and has had many bodies before and will continue to. I guess that’s why she said that line.

while the ten of swords tarot card has already been pointed out, I'd also like to mention the title of the song, Death, is also a tarot card. though it doesn't mean literal death, and instead metamorphosis, the end of cycles, and transformation. pretty fitting.
I think back from the dead either symbolizes that she’s back making music or Crybaby being back from the dead in her nymph form.
I think the whole album is about how her ex treated her and how she got over him and I really like that idea.

Like the story is set up for us in K-12 where at the end she finally gets to go through the portal with Lilith and leave her mortal shell behind that she feels trapped in after fulfilling her purpose in that lifetime on earth. I love Melanie as an artist, she puts so much time and effort into every detail of the music she makes. I didn’t think she could get any better than her K-12 album since it was literally a movie with a strong storyline but then she released Portals. She’s crazy talented and has such a unique sound/way of expressing herself. She does a crazy amount of symbolic research to create her music and really makes sure the visuals can be related back to the lyrics.

K so here’s a theory I heard and put some of my own arguments inside. As we all know the dead person is Crybaby meaning Portal is a continuity of what happens after K-12 unfortunately by not following her friends inside the magic door at the end of K-12 Crybaby ends up dying but because she’s an Empath she came back in another body (that’s the meaning of “I’m Dead but Alive”) as an Empath if I remember correctly she isn’t supposed to remember her past life’s but this time she does remember and her mission was already done so she didn’t came back as a Human this time. But I really hope Melanie makes another movie like K-12 about what really happened to Crybaby that brought her Death

So I’ve decided to really dive into all of this and currently a small snippet that I found is in teachers pet she talks about cheating and then says the rules go all the way to 11, pacify her on crybaby is #11 and I previously noted in my deep dive that the song ties into cheating and infidelity. I know there’s so much more than this but they all really do tie together.

I think it means two things. One she's back to her music, but also it's about the death of the relationship with Oliver. Not only is she buried in the same dress but the creature that put in the last sword in her at the end of the song has Oliver's signature hairstyle. Which is NOT common. I think this album is her release from a difficult relationship and now she is back from the dead.
