    Never had a problem with the Keihin carbs myself. Easy to rebuild and easy to adjust; nice and simple.

      @@motorcyclerewind 3 jet Kei-Hin are fixable but you can't just 'jet them out' when stock air-boxes are removed. There will always be an issue between approximately ~4,000rpm and ~6,000rpm.
      Personally I'm not a fan of fitting 'piston ported two stroke' jetted carbs to four stroke motors, the only way I've gotten Mikuni's to work properly on a four-stoke is either use Yamaha RD 350/400 ones (Yamaha changed all the 'brass when they fitted reed valves to the two-strokes) or, make custom emulsion tubes.
      The 1972 Cycle World fit Mikuni's had a follow up where they stated the actual cost of making Mikuni's work properly was way more than the cost of the original carbs plus a 'bucket full' of parts that didn't work. (and about three months of extensive trial and error)
      Sudco only import Mikuni VM for a 1970's two stroke so they still have issues 'on the road' either on acceleration or steady state cruising

      I would upgrade a carb on just about anything 😂 tbh an aftermarket carb that’s a tad notches bigger really wakes up these old bikes… I feel like the stock carbs out the factor are restrictive and set for better emissions. We want speed, performance, and reliability. Couldn’t get my keihins tuned either on a cb200 the adjustments did nothing. Slapped two pz27 carbs and it ran much smoother and quieter than I’ve ever seen this bike run lol.

      I agree. I don't see the point of replacing the carbs with Mikunis. Also, why didn't the Mikunis work right out of the box? Didn't check the float level? or the air screw setting? And why the gaskets? Good for metal to metal, but the snorkels are rubber.

    Oh what a great blast from my past, thank you. Bought it right out of H.S. in Spring of '77 from an acquaintance for $400 and it was the first vehicle I owned myself (much to my parent's dismay of course but I couldn't afford a car). Excepting for heavier rain days (although I did have my poncho and bubble style face shield LMAO) I rode that everywhere day & night right into mid November when . . . well, you know.

    2024 - I changed out my Keihins for Mikuni 28's on CB360 and yup had muck around a little, changed the cable and throttle tube from a CB350, but well worth the fiddle, mid-range pulling power much better, great round town. Very useful videos like this helped.

    Nice video, just a friendly reminder to always check your float height even if the carbs are new and you'll need to synchronize the carbs for optimal performance

      Good tip! You are so right. Should always open them up and check them out. I have had jets fall out in brand new carbs. Sometimes I get too excited for my own good. I just want to get it together so I can ride it.

    I had one of these too. It was a bit small for me. In 75 I got a Yamaha 650 then graduated to a Suzuki GT 750.
    Now my ride is a 05 BMW GS 1200 and yes I do my own maintenance. 🔧

    I tried putting pods on my carbs for a streamlined look and chucked out the old air box. I tried and tried and could never make it run smooth. I cried a million Tera’s and tried a million jet sizes and combinations. Eventually bought another standard air box

      This was the Mikuni kit and they were pretty plug and play. Two reasons I did this kit. 1,. The bike did not have carbs when I got it. 2. Always wanted yo try this kit. Financially it made sense. Thanks for watching.

    Brings back very happy memories of my first candy orange 1976 G5 which I tuned with all the collective knowledge of my Dad and what I read, plus every available performance part from Harris and Girling, plus Avon Roadrunners. I highlighted the logos in the same white rubber paint they used for race bikes and cars.
    When we’d finished, it was faster than the two stroke Yamahas in a distance race!! And it looked gorgeous.
    Then one rainy night, a Rover 3.5 hit me side-on at 60mph, which sent me into low Earth orbit! The chrome bumper smashed my right foot, and bent the footrest right under the engine. My knee burst the tank open, and my right hip modified the Rover bonnet (hood). Re-entry adjusted some more of my components (spine and pelvis), and moved me to have a desperate conversation with Jesus…! He sent me some angels in nurses uniforms.
    Some of this is actually true. The full version is even more complicated and way crazier.
    That tank colour brings it all back. No trauma. Been through much worse after that. I’m mostly annoyed by the loss of such a lovely bike, and the cop that lied in his statement - after accepting a bribe from the wealthy Rover driver!!

      I don't remember much being available for G5? It was way over geared though. (geared for about 130mph) I fitted G5 transmission and Suzuki GS1000 pistons to CJ250 to get almost 400cc. Got me 15 seconds of fame on BBC (mainly due to editing from 2 different days at a local 'sprint')
      I once towed a Rover 3.5 SD1 with a highly modified Kawasaki sidecar outfit, kinda 'interesting'

    I used to have a 1968. I thought by the early 70's they'd ditched the manual cam chain tensioner in favor of an oil pressure tensioner. I never saw a factory carb that did not have holes in the diaphragm.

      Those diaphragms were prone to cracking after sitting for years.

      @@motorcyclerewind True, but even newer ones would split above the brass (vent) inserts. I never figured out if it was gas or fumes or pressure or what that caused them to open up there.

    1973 Honda CB 350 , 325cc engine it is a K2 and the G was the CB 360 a number of years later, Original air filters are bloody hard to find for original bikes like that these days I have had to manufacture Foam filters from original Air filters because they were just not available.
    The Tapered Cone filters are supplied because they are easy to fit.
    But an interesting sidenote I did some airbox mods and rejetting a couple of years back for a mate on a 2014 Triumph Thruxton and we used tapered filters for frame clearance but where he worked as an active handler changing Fuel rods etc in the Reactor he ended up having half a dozen nuclear physicists arguing and then calculating filter area between a tapered filter tlike those in this conversion kit and a straight filter the same large diameter at the Carb end as the tapered filter and both the same length and surprise as looking at both filters side by side everyone thinks the tapered filter actually has less surface area to filter with.
    Guess what not so the Tapered side filters actually have more surface area than the straight ones because the angle of the Taper actually makes those sides longer giving more surface area.

    5 degree advanced electronic ignition ( around $100 ) . Had a cb250j , great bikes and sound . Without badges mine was mistaken for a British 1960s bike often .

    In my experience, the CB250 works better with VM30 and the CB350 with VM32. Also prefer foam filters over the velocity stacks. The filters I use goes with same main jets as without filters.
    Correct tuned carbs needs around 4 minutes warm up before going without choke (actually it's an enrichener).

    When i was the inverse of my age now at 16 i bought 3 frames and 12 boxes worth of parts from a junk dealer, I got one of the frames registered in my name and rebuilt this bike from the frame up, i meticulously cleaned polished and painted every part to new condition. Of the tanks i had, only one was pristine, but it was orange, metallic i think, the like new side covers i had were red so i taped off the striping and chrome gas cap etc. and painted it candy apple red to match the side covers.
    Your tank looks like its orange underneath sitting on the bench:??: I used cereal boxes to make gaskets, if that's the engine i rebuilt with the help of a good friend one winter in my basement with a Chilton's manual you'll see a Kellogg's rooster on one side of the gasket on the side cover. I found a nice set of aftermarket pipes the cops hated, and mine had a large sissy bar/ luggage rack on the back that got me thrown in front of a trans am one time, but that's another story, that much being said, i remember those chrome caps on the carbs and thinking how beautiful they were so, unless you saw some significant improvement in performance putting these on, i don't think its worth the trouble and the reduction in value of the bike by taking the factory carbs off of it. I remember distinctly the sound of it, and thanks for letting me hear it, albeit with a bit of a stumble, it's throttle response was awesome the sound from those aftermarket pipes was amazing and the back pressure sound as you shifted on that bike was the best part of running it to the redline in every gear... no improvement necessary. Wish i still had it!
    Honda all my life, V65 next then, currently, a '97 Shadow 1100 Ace. Funny thing, the Flying V had 69 ft lbs. of torque and the cruiser has 64! 90,000 kms on it and I've put brakes, tires and a Barnett Clutch on it. Love Honda's! Kind of looking for a Valkyrie or a VTX 1800 maybe, but i cant let go of the 1100! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

    You need a velocity stack. to better the throttle response and aviod bogs. its in the OEM air filter housing\tube

      I am not sure. I had a cracked carb body on the original carb. So I was going to have to buy other ones and rebuild, I had just finished the CB550 Mikuni swap video which was pleased. Thats how I ended up with this swap. The bike has since been sold.

      For road use they are not superior. and fuel economy is often worse due to the 'primary choke' fitted (instead of emulsion tube, it gets richer as airflow increases to max throttle opening)
      A pair of Mikuni's wasn't a lot more expensive than a pair of new diaphragms though and used to be a LOT cheaper. (you could get genuine Mikuni for $95.00 each, shipped around 2004~6)
      You do need to spend a fair bit to get new slides, needle, emulsion tubes and jets as Sudco only imports one setup (then sells the parts) Slides were about $30.00 each last I checked, needles, $12.00 each, jets $6.00 each
      I contacted Sudco several years ago and was told 'jetting is proprietary' but I think they just didn't want to admit they didn't know?
      Having a brand new pair on the shelf I can tell you it isn't, it's just WRONG for four stroke application. (and why anyone who has actually pre-jetted them properly want's closer to $450)
      I think Honda must be using the same size diaphragm in a much newer bike though as a few years ago I fitted a pair to 350 carbs. 360 diaphragms are also available new from Honda and often cheaper than used on eBay

    I did china air strikers clones on modified stock cables for $50 bucks. For 15 years I wanted slides but wasn't spending the $350. There's more than 1 way to milk a duck.

    I'm not clear what the benefit is from changing the carbs. Quite expensive, too. The stock Keihin CV carbs are really good and easy to adjust/maintain.

      Thanks for watching. I have had several CB/CL over the years and have had great results with the stock carbs. Had always seen these carb upgrades and wanted to give it a try. Did it first on my CB550 and was happy so thought I would do it on this build and was happy.

    Can you elaborate on "spinning" the battery box? Did it work? I'm thinking about rotating my batter 90 degrees but it seems like there isn't quite enough space to do so.

      Spinning = turning 90 degrees. Did not have to do it on this bike. Have done it on others. Most recently I opened the rear of the battery box so the battery would be serviceable with a longer tank. I will link a couple of videos.

    The problem is that the stock exhaust was removed. Hondas of this era needed stock exhaust to run right.

      Agreed. The problem with this motorcycle goes deeper! It was completely disassembled and missing pieces put it back together on a budget. Thanks for watching.

    I never had luck with using RTV for a mating surface that is exposed to gas. Oil, yes, gas, no.

      I love my CA77 put 6,000 miles on it one year about 5 years ago. I have never thought about upgrading it.

    So what exactly was the problem with the Keihin carbs that needed this "upgrade"? As noted below they are easy to rebuild, and less complicated than the Mikunis. Persond contenplating this should note that this removes the attachment points for the side covers as well, which may or moy not be an "upgrade", aesthetically - it isn't for me!

      Honestly I can’t remember what the problem was if there was one. This was a bin bike when I got it. Meaning it was in bins. Completely disassembled. Was always curious. So I did the swap. The side covers are still there. I left the factory air boxes incase someone wanted to go back to stock.

    My 1973 CB350 has a hose connecting each side of the fuel tank which runs under the frame rail which means I have to drain the tank and disconnect the hose each time I remove the tank. I noticed you easily removed your tank and I am extremely jealous! How is yours set up to allow this? Also do you know if your set up is stock and mine has been modified at some point?

      Ran the cross over tube over the frame.

      A much better way is to get a set of self sealing quick disconnects. That way you can remove tank without draining it plus you don't scratch up the frame. They are a little pricey but worth it.

    Notice the Airbox is missing..did you take if off prior to this Video or did the Bike not have them fitted when you bought it?

      I bought this bike in bins. Completely disassembled. Missing some pieces and parts. Like the carbs which is why I did the swap.

    What is it with people and using that damn RTV on intake parts? RTV and gas do not mix. Besides the squeeze out gets sucked into the engine and screws that up too. Lock tite 518 or aviation brush on sealer would be better for flat gaskets.

      If one uses the correct formula, and tightens completely only after curing, it works.

      don't see why it wouldn't. The stock carbs, intake are the same for a CL and CB.

      This set from www.speed Moto I.com come pre tuned to your bike. You tell them your set up. Pretty plug and play out the box. The only adjustment I’d to the throttle cable. Pretty easy. I am waiting on a set from them for my 79 CB750. Hope this helps. Check them out at Speedmotoco.com

      Thanks. I already purchased the carbs from speedmoto. I’m waiting on an adapter to attach the factory air box, so I was doing some more research before finishing install. The pod filters don’t really fit for a cl360 and I assume cb350 without relocating the battery, which I don’t want to mess with right now. Maybe later.

      Also the carburetors aren’t side specific, so it will be a pain to adjust the idle screw and air screw on the right side carburetor once it’s on the bike. Not a huge deal just a minor detail. I thought they’d be side specific

      Only if you can find one that doesn't break down due to overheating. 350 does have the 'points housing' slightly insulated so electronic ignition does seem to last longer than on a CB360 which runs a bit hotter, even venting the housing doesn't seem to work on 360's :(

      @@1crazypj I installed an electronic ignition on my 1970 back in 2002, it came from England and I have no idea who the manufacturer is, but it was the single best upgrade on that bike. Never a single issue with it. I always hated trying to set dual points, no matter how close I though it was, there was always a slight stumble in the idle. Oh well! I'm old as dirt, I also have a slight stumble. :)

      @@patrickjwhited6567 It would probably be a Boyer ignition. ( although I believe they sold out and I forget the new name)
      Boyer pretty much started making electronic ignition for Triumph and Norton so knew a bit about heat and vibration.
      I fitted one to my CB550 F1 in 1979 or 80 (I forget exactly)
      It used photo diodes rather than Hall effect and magnets. I still have one for early 70's Bonneville somewhere

      I have a cb350 trying to keep it stock as much as possible.common motors is a great shop but always looking for different shops for parts
