@@mammontustado9680Because his signature snare drum is mega expensive. I still own one of the original 500 snares that was made that has the Majesty logo wrapped all around the drum. It has a story of it's own, that snare. But the condensed story:- I brought it second hand in 2005. Loved it. But then got into a gambling addiction spiral. Sold the snare drum to some guy in Manchester for £200 to fund a night of poker. Lost the money of course. For years I regretted selling the snare. So when one came up for sale I had to jump on it. Anyway, it was only the person I sold the snare to who was selling it, so I was reunited with the snare I originally owned ❤ It is my favourite snare to use especially for recordings. Compliments my Mapex Saturn Snare well, but just has that extra bit of bite for rock due to the hoops.
Portnoy a master genius! at 10:53 he throws the drumstick to the sky and that drumstick falls into the plate at the same time he punch the crash... without words jajaj
His Tom sound is phenomenal. Although the OP sound is Scenes From a Memory. Those 24" kicks were something else. I tried for years to achieve that sound.
@@stefanovozzo1085 I would probably say that Neil Perth is the vest drummer in the world , Cuz most drummers today use him as an role model to follow !
@@donniebjorklund4491 whose Neil perth... are you thinking of Neil peart? I know him at least.. also hes a good idolized drummer but hes not a piece of clothing like a vest...
For me he's a great drummer and a great way to learn because he plays with dicipline and straight to see each hit or tempo i love drums but dont train enough .
I just love portnoy ! how he makes everything work . in the music in total . maybe I'm wrong but that is how I see him !! Got to love him or hate him as haters do !!
It's because you're listening to the studio track playing over video of him drumming. There are certain parts of the song that don't sync up because he played slightly differently in the video than on the studio track. These videos are very deceiving that way!
I'm guessing this was one of Portnoy's "off" days. If you pay attention to all the transitions and fades in the footage, they must have filmed this in at least ten takes. Which is quite strange considering this is one of DT's easier songs to play.
I wouldn't say they're fails, just stuff that didn't make the final cut. Mike filmed himself recording these drums but not when he recorded parts that made the final recording. Maybe when he was tracking drums for the song, he went back, did a few more takes that he preferred (not filming) and chose to use them instead.
Actually he's pretty much improvising. There's no "pre-planned right" take when he's recording. He plays the song several times and then picks the parts he likes the most and edits them together.
THE KING HAS RETURNED HOME!! LOOKING FORWARD TO NEW ALBUM!
His snare always sounds so good 🤘🥁
True! Makes me wonder why that snare isn't more popular among drummers

Absolutely right

is that intentional? 😂
Whoelse has Portnoy as favorite drummer, give thumbs up....
I’m personally a huge Peart fan but Portnoy is right there with him 👍
I just love the punch of Mikes drums.
His Tom sound is phenomenal. Although the OP sound is Scenes From a Memory. Those 24" kicks were something else. I tried for years to achieve that sound.
The literal beating heart of Dream Theater... I miss what he brought to this band...
this mike portnoy guy covers a lot of dream theater songs. He should join the band, he's better than the guy they've got right now.
Oh I get it. Its because hes no longer with the band. Good one.
Who is better than Mike?
Ivan Draganic Asking the real question
That one was good!
Mike is better than Mike, Change my mind...
Mike seems to do everything so easy....jesus i love this drummer!!!

Where can I find drums like this in my country ? This is nothing close to what I use for playing. I live in Bangladesh.
must be a nightmare to mic up
Zachary Walsh a nightmare to remember how to play
Nah. They have top level techs. Mic it a few times and it's easy. Probably have a chart of what goes where.
The trick is NOT to try to close mic EVERYTHING, ONLY what you must. And you catch the rest with overheads
0 I get that joke. Good one
🔥
Respect to the Leyend
petrucci at the top of right side
9:02? Tu és monstro
9:08 My eyes and ears are out of sync.
8:50 you can hear a ride cymbal but on a video he is playing a hi-hat. :D
haha true!! after the tom

That type of stuff occurs often in this video
9:09 there is also a tom-snare mismatch but he must have got all together at some stage. Such an awesome drummer.

When I tighten my crashes that much they break. I need a sponsorship
Cool Cool
Wish it was actually live sound
*AWESOME* but why the weird cut→ right at the end.?
Usually represents a "punch in" as far as I have been able to tell.
Il groove iniziale è preso palesemente dalla canzone "welcome home(sanitarium)" dei metallica
Solo quello?😂
lol the beginning sounds like mj's give into me :)
True! Great song btw.
Missed beats/fails
8:18
8:50 through 9:10
10:32 (hits the splash cymbals but you can hear riding on a crash)

where do you people get these studio recordings from?
Was that a rim shot on the tom at the end, after all the mad chops?
Remember seeing DT in London in late 90's - they were absolutely phenomenal. Their song writing has run out of gas a bit since then which is a shame.
0:21 lol
@Iman Habibie ?
Given all the edits, I guess he had to do a few takes to get it all right.
Actually he's pretty much improvising. There's no "pre-planned right" take when he's recording. He plays the song several times and then picks the parts he likes the most and edits them together.
4:45
I noticed how high he sits.
Don't see how it was a fail when he didn't even try to grab it.
where is the pinstripe ?
10:48-10:52 Meow Mix song
Pretty sure this is just the actual song over the video
some how reminds me "welcome home (sanitarium)"
Rom Ero
The intro reminds me of Suicidal Tendencies' How Will I Laugh Tomorrow
Yep, a lot.... like embarrassingly so.
for me the intro sounds like ”if I die tomorrow” by mötley crüe :D
0:20 kkkkkkk
So lucky
i can see petrucii on the side haha
11:35 fail hahaha
Watching Mike Portnoy play drums really makes me want to quit
…my job and pursue a drummer career.
really? It makes me feel like learning drums lol
Lamentablemente no esta tocando, por sino se dieron cuenta!!

I don't know why, but Portnoy in this vid looks like a kick ass, gothic, Ronald McDonald....
Mike mangini!!..he doesn't even give his ankles.
Portnoy= perfection
Mangini= imitation
In the only way they look alike is the name!
Planet pigs
just, don't fuckin cut the video
Needs to work on his confidence.
excellent musician, terrible at solos
It is out of sync
