  • #weldingdirtyaluminum #weldingcastaluminum #tigweldingaluminum Today I’m showing you a few techniques for preping and welding cast aluminum. Prep work is key in any welding process but it’s impossible to get a decent weld without thorough cleaning on cast aluminum because of its porous nature. Hope this helps!

I think the worst I did was an oil pan on a skid steer. While on the skid steer. Used a spool gun. Ugly when done but it held oil. I like your videos. I teach now and share them with my class.

l have a spool gun set up for alum, will try on bulky works. Tig seems doing a finer patches/build ups.

Use Phosphoric Acid to chemically clean Aluminum, (Alumi-Prep). That is what is used in Aircraft Aluminum Alloys. Lime-Away may work.

Great videos. Wear some robber gloves when you use acetone. It absorbs thru your skin and goes straight to your liver, or kidneys, don't remember which. Stay safe.

5356 is generally used on unknown aluminum alloys and more so on dirty cast. 4043 works though but keep this in mind… unless using a spoolgun, spoolgun welds with 5356 filler are terrible in my opinion and spoolgun on a job like this should only be done as a last resort if you have no access to AC TIG.

Thank you for simple, clear instruction. l am welding a damaged quad engine lower casing with a hole and broken away edge. l am using a cheap lift inverter tig 165, not sure will do a good job. Any advices appreciated.

pre heat with a torch. get to at least 400 deg then weld at full amps you might get a puddle. if you haven't welded aluminum before. don't make this your first project

@@MeltinMetalAnthony Thanks, l m refining my tig set up for ac, thicker tungsten to do the cooking/filling after preheating the job. Will practice on junk cast alum parts(a bad cut off saw) till good results acquired. l arc alum sticks, its good bulk jobs.

@@MeltinMetalAnthony Thanks, l did the repairs by Duraweld rod, as my repair spots on quad lower casing are all none critical structural areas.
