Here the Mosfet is used as a relay. You can use a N chanel (cheaper than P) with the source connected to the negative terminal of the battery with the glow plug being inserted between the positive terminal and the drain. You need to connect a resistor from gate to (-). The gate will be connected to a resistor in serie with a micro switch tied to (+). In case you use a logic level Mosfet with a 12V battery I would recommend 10Kohms for gate to switch and 5.6 K for gate to ground. In case not 10K for both resistors is fine. Any power Mosfet with Rdson loawer than 10 mOhms will do the job. In case you want to use a Mosfet with higher Rdson then you will need a heatsink to cool it down.

Dude, that is awesome. I can see some enhancements, like a small microcontroller with a small display and buttons, plus a thermocouple in order to let the user adjust the desired temperature, and use PWM to bring the glow plug up to that temperature and hold it there.
