  • During my visit to Kitee, my hometown, I also took the opportunity to explore the Riveria vocational school's Kitee campus. I walked around the school's outdoor grounds, filming the scenery and the school itself. Annually, about 300-350 students study at the Kitee campus. The Kitee campus of Riveria also has international students, though instruction is in Finnish. These students have come from as far as Russia, Ukraine, and Asia.

Hello, thank you for your feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! The town is small and very compact. The downtown area consists of just one street where most shops and services are located. While I was in the yard, I met a teacher who mentioned that students have come from abroad, but they study in Finnish. Currently, there is no instruction in English at this campus. The campus offers programs in Finnish for careers such as animal caretakers, chefs, practical nurses, and welders, among others. Kitee has a few foreigners, and the town even features an immigrant-owned kebab pizzeria. 🙂

Hei! Thank you for video. How can I get Finnish language proficiency test done with certificate? Also, I have applied to couple of schools from abroad and they often tell me I can only attend entrance exam onsite to test my proficiency or I submit Finnish B2 level certificate, how can I get into Vocational school as an international applicant to study practical nursing program? Riveria and Vamia are quite competitive with limited options. Kiitos paljon.

It's true that many require a Finnish language test. It depends on the country you are in. Some schools have targeted campaigns for specific countries. In that case, it is usually about an apprenticeship where the school and the company cooperate. Another option is to apply directly to study in Finland, for example in English, while learning Finnish at the same time. A third option is to apply directly for a job in Finland and if you want to study for a vocational degree at the same time, for instance, a nursing assistant would then apply for nursing studies in Finland through an apprenticeship in either English or Finnish. Taking the Finnish language test from abroad without a targeted project is almost an impossible task. I recommend asking directly from the educational institutions for advice.
There are only a few vocational studies available in English. The offerings are limited to those trainings and the areas of those schools where there is a shortage of those particular skilled workers.
I have considered making a video about projects where people learn Finnish and then come to study at a vocational school in Finnish. Those projects are not free, though. Apparently, in Kitee as well, some have come through those projects and others are immigrants.

@@JohnofFinland291 Thank you so much for your detailed reply. It's quite thoughtful of you and I look forward to such project. You can equally consider job opportunities through apprenticeship. A fair fee will be highly appreciated. I am quite interested in the opportunity to work and study as a practical nurse.

You can study Finnish online and earn a certification. Once you have obtained your certificate, you can attempt a language test either in your home country or abroad. This will undoubtedly be beneficial.
If you are abroad and interested in taking a Finnish language proficiency test, options such as the SKK are available at certain educational institutions. Although less known than YKI, the SKK is useful for certifying your language skills for job or study applications. Additionally, contacting the nearest Finnish embassy or consulate may help you discover more local testing options or courses available in your country.
Furthermore, the requirement for Finnish language proficiency varies between educational institutions and depends on the intended audience. The required level can range from A1.3 to B2. Notably, some schools may have a lower requirement for Finnish proficiency, especially if the courses are designed for immigrants or are conducted in English.
(I was discussing vocational education in vocational schools, and essentially, the same principles also apply to upper secondary school education.)

At the Kitee campus, instruction is provided exclusively in Finnish, and proficiency in Finnish is required to study there. You can pursue the following professions: cook, electrician, house builder, practical nurse, animal caretaker, rural entrepreneur, machinist, plater welder, and Vocational Qualification in Business (merkonomi).
