- Do not get me wrong, I LOVE my RYOBI RY405050 Leaf Vacuum and Mulcher when it comes to leaf collection. It has been a workhorse with no issues. The one complaint I have is the bag. It gets very heavy and is a pain to empty without have disconnect it from the unit. The zipper gets stuck, and debris continuously leak out.
One of my commenters on Reddit suggested that I try the WORX Leaf Collection kit. I picked one up from Amazon and looked. The kit comes with a mesh cover that will cover just about any collection bin you have from a small trashcan to the largest 96-gallon curb bins that are popular in large metro areas. There is an eight-foot flexible hose, two connectors for Work brand products, and a universal connector for other brands.
I hooked it all up to my Ryobi Leaf Mulcher and it seemed to be working, or so I thought. The angle of the outlet port was causing a restriction with the universal adapter. So, I figured I could just remove the outlet tube and reconnect the boot. This proved to be harder than it seemed. I eventually just cut the bend out of the outlet tube and reconnected the boot. This proved to be a vast improvement to the functionality of the unit.
Unfortunately, I got rained out, so my testing ended, but in general the performance was there, all of the leaves ended up in the bin, the bad part is I am now tethered to the can by an eight-foot hose. Maybe a longer hose is in order we will have to see.
My season is coming to a close, all the leaves are down, now if I can just get the rain to stop, so I can pick them up before it kills the lawn or freezes over.

I bought the same vac/mulcher and like how it picks up the leaves and mulches them, as well as the wheels so I don't have to hold the nozzle up, but I feel like you have to be 6' tall to use it! I'm only 5'2" and the bag just drags around unless I hold it up at an awkward uncomfortable angle. I'm going to try this because we have so many leaves that even with the 8' hose I think we can get a container full so dragging the can around to different spots will be easier than trying to hold that other bag up. It's also difficult to empty so putting them right into the big can to roll into the woods will make it much easier!
I'm going to experiment with a longer hose. But I'm glad I got the Worx system.
Great! I've done something similar with a 25/50ft flex downspout drain hose. Connect it to the blower/vac, and it pushes the debris to a spot in the yard while i clean up the entire section

I’ve got a similar set up. Similar in that it’s green colored. It’s my my riding mower. I just mow them up. It’s nice because I can sit down while I do it. It’s also very quick. If there are any in the garden I blow them onto the lawn and mow them. Very simple. I have a buddy that does the same with his walk behind mower. The best part about it is a full bag of leaves is way lighter than a full bag of grass. Easy money.
I wish my yard was big enough to justify a rider!
I bought a Ryobi leaf blower/mulcher about 25 years ago. The problem I find with these is that in order for them not to take forever to pickup the leaves they need more suction, but that in turn means that you are picking up things like rocks and tree nuts which can ruin the mulching blade. For me it's faster just to rake or blow the leaves onto the lawn and either bag or mulch them with the mower.

@@DadItYourselfDIY Yeah, I'm not surprised. I almost bought that same machine but after watching a few videos I decided against it. I can see it being useful if you have a lot of paved surfaces though.

When you Rake leafs you get it done faster & is a good workout at slow pace or faster. As you see here with this gadget. You must adjust your pace to it vise versa waste of time.That it will finally delay you as it will get you to start adjusting the gadget to make it feel that if you do it. You will get it done faster like quicker & the rain will catch up to you faster. 😢😮
I have a KEMP mulcher from 1950, will eat leaf's, branches', dirt clods and most anything you throw in it. Was thinking of getting something new, but my old 5hp. belt driven mulcher looks to bein my future for a few more years. Both of us from the same year and still holding our own!

I was surprised to see whole leaves in the green bin. My Ryobi Leaf Vacuum grinds up the leaves to a fine dust that gets everywhere when I dump the bag. Will be looking into the Worx, now $41 at HD.
Those may have been some I tossed in, or they just got lucky.. 😆
I’ve had one of these for 3 years and I love it. However we have way too many leaves for just one trash can. So what I do it use a regular 35-40 gallon trash can, and line it with a lawn and leaf bag first then put the bagger on the trash can and that way when it’s full i can just tie up the bag and put in another one. I love how full I can get the bags, especially if I push the leaves down more. That’s why I use a smaller size can. It makes it easier to push down the leaves without having to take the bagger off of the can.
Im fortunate that my leaf problem is managable.

Having to move furniture around to sweep has become too big a chore. This blower was the answer. It is light enough for this 70yr old lady and powerful enough to blow all the tree droppings off my rather large deck. Thank you B&D. Be aware the cord is not included. I use a 3 prong outdoor cord 25' cord for my 12' x 20' deck. The cord retainer works very well, but don't try to pass the plug through it. That is NOT how it works. You just have to loop the cord and it works great. One of my best purchases. Very happy.

A good old wire wreck does the trick. I just use a piecemeal approach. I tackle my backyard based on simple priority. Good exercise and saves the environment:-)

@@DadItYourselfDIY one time I had a big pile of leaves and I wanted some mulch for a flower bed. So I turned on the leaf sucker, laid it on the ground, and pointed the hose at the flower bed, then just raked leaves into it. I occasionally moved the hose around to spray the mulched leaves to different parts of the bed. Worked awesome.

Thanks for doing this video. I was contemplating if this would be a good replacement for my woodchipper where I am using putting leaves in with these giant plastic claw. Very hard on my back but watching how slow these electric blower/vac. I think I'll be outside all fall and winter trying to pick up leaves in my yard. I guess I either have to go with a cyclone rake or just continue with what I am doing.

had something very similar to this over 25 years ago - Black and Decker. Attached to leaf blower converting to a vac' with a hose and topper for a trash can. Used it for years ..... didn't like big pine needles but dry leaves were a piece of cake. I could put a liner in the can and the mulch went straight to the trash bag ...... not too difficult to change collection bags . . .

Great mod! Been looking for an attachment like this for a lawn mower. Wonder why no ones been able to create an attachment for a lawn mower. They have the lawn bag but it can take just a little of the clippings and when it gets full, the clippings ad leaves fly out from under the mower. If they could make a 'skirt" to contain the clippings and leaves, it would make yard work a lot easier. I have two big trees that shed a lot of leaves through out the year and an constantly raking leaves up. Lately, I've been using the mower to mulch the leaves but I have to keep stopping to empty the rear bag collection. Run the mower for 5 minutes, stop to empty the bag then continue again. Would be good if I could just keep going.

Appreciate the video and all your efforts to give a realistic demo. When it comes to picking up leaves that system just looks too time consuming. I still think putting down a big tarp and blow all the leaves onto it, drag it to the curb, and hire a vacuum truck suck them all up.
We have green bin pickup in my community. Vacuum truck service is not a thing here.
@G Delete...Hire a vacuum truck? I have to mow/mulch and vacuum leaves every 10 - 12 days in my yard in the fall. City picks up yard waste weekly in bins or paper bags.

The hose will blow out of the cover but can be fixed using a zip tie. It will still come out but not as often. The universal connector will not stay attached no matter how tight it is. Cleverly rigged bungees will help a lot. Blowing the leaves into a 96-gallon can is handy if you don't have to take them out to bag the leaves into paper bags. I use a 32-gallon can which fills one paper bag. This reflects my experience using the Worx collection system with a Toro vacuum. Using the Worx leaf vac/blower the setup works much better. The hose still blows out of the bag on rare occasions, however.
Never had the hose blow out. I made a customer adapter to fit my Ryobi vacuum.
For small yards, that probably works. But for larger yards with lots of trees, that leaf mulcher is basically useless. Instead, get a gas-powered leaf blower, and a chipper/shredder. Blow the leaves into big piles, then put them into the chipper-shredder. So much easier.

Probably more effective than a hose clamp instead of the ratchet strap would be to hot clue some material around the output of the blower so the adapter can't slide off. A hose clamp would probably slide off eventually without a flange of some type there anyway. I'm a little unimpressed with how slow the vacuums seems to pick up the leaves. It also doesn't appear to chop them up very much as compared to my old craftsman corded vac. I was looking to replace that one, but now I'm thinking I'll keep it and just get this hose kit.

That's a cool little accessory. I just did my yard and you can't do much without having to empty the bag. I have a Worx blower / vac combo, runs on AC so it's a lot more powerful, works fantastic. I blow them into a pile and then vac the pile. One thing I'm curious about, how compact do the leaves in the bin get? I'm assuming you have to get in it and crush them down a few times.
Leaves get pulverized. No need to compact.

Do you think the RYOBI vac would work with dog hair? My lab sheds a ridiculous amount of hair around the patio and using a blower isn’t a viable option because the hair just ends up in the air and a lot makes it into the pool. Just wondering if the mulching aspect would be an issue with the hair.
It may get tangled, depends on how long. What about a shopvac?
I personally prefer to use my blower to get everything into a nice huge pile, and then I use the ryobi mulching vac. This way I'm not moving too far with the bag and it's quick to empty it (since I fill it up super quick from a big pile). This would eliminate having to dump the bag, but honestly it's not much of a chore to me, and I'm definitely not hacking away at the bottom to use this tool. I'd rather just honest empty the bag 5ish times than be directly tethered to a trashcan. At the same time, I do see it as a useful option in addition to the bag for sections where I could easily move my trashcan in close proximity. I also have the ryobi dual blade mower, and emptying the bag for that is even easier. So yeah... I don't know how often I personally would utilize this ontop of the bags, but options are always good. Between my mower, blower, and mulched combo I don't see this being incorporated into my normal work flow too much.

I've had this system for a couple of years. I use it with my work tri vac that I got at a garage sale. My problem is the hose keeps popping out of the cloth cover that goes over the trash can. I can't get the rope any tighter. Is there some kind of clamp or something you can recommend that I could put around the tube inside the trash can so it stops popping loose?
Mine has only done that once, but I was able to get it tight. Probably a large zip tie in place of the rope.
I have a lot of leaves from maple trees. I blow them all out onto the lawn. I then cut the grass low with the mulch plug on the Deere E130 and go over them. Ii usually gets pulverize in one pass and they disappear. I just got two Predator mulching blades yesterday - I have to wait until my serviceman comes and he can put them on when he does the tune up. I'm ninety-three and can't do what I used to do - I just put it on cruise control and let it putt along.

Looks like a good set up. The thing that I didn't like is that it really doesn't mulch the leaves small enough. I have a leaf mulcher which I've had for many years and it too doesn't mulch the leaves small enough to use in the garden as a nutrient. But what you have looks like a nice setup.

In my idea - that I reached out to him for help - Io would give up mulching completely - it gets stuck and is just bad - so I have say 10 bins large round trash cans from depot - use large hose - suck it all into the bin - press it down using a piece of thick wood cut to same size of the bin -with a pole, holes in the end piece - push down as much as needed without making this too hard - then the bin is on a dolly with a cord to keep it on - until to the street the night before the city picks up here. Thoughts?
I have a Toro like this, although its corded and it chops the leaves up very finely.. also has a bag attachment that i hate.. may have a new option here

Do you think removing the 90 degree outlet in general will improve the suction? Say even for just using the bag?
Probably not anything noticeable. I had to because the adapter sleeve was blocking the hole.
I just recently got 2 of these Worx leaf collection systems for less than the price of 1. Brand new.
I've got a Toro ultraplus 51621 leaf blower and vacuum which has been awesome but the leaf bag got heavy.
I've got a large 95 gallon trash can with wheels, so I'll get a liner and use that.
I haven't used it yet, I'll see if I can get a connector to connect both hoses (one from each kit) making it 16 feet instead of 8. I don't know that length will mess up the suction or not.
If I can't find a connector to connect the 2 hoses together or having the 2 hoses connected messed up the suction then at least I have a second collection system for parts of something breaks.
With my toro, which I feel is pretty powerful for an electric, I hope it'll work fine.
I'd love yo hear if you get tge two hoses working together and how the performance is.
I'm late to this post,, but I will offer a suggestion. I have three giant oaks in my yard. So, I get lots of leaves. I blow my leaves into large piles then run the leaf blower on mulch mode with the Work collection system into my trash can. That way I reduce the amount of time I am dragging the trash can around. I did notice your mulch results. I have an old blower/mulcher when fired up sounds like a jet engine. My blower reduces the leaves to a sawdust size. My yard is big enough and my leaf fall large enough that a battery powered blower can't get it done on several batteries at one afternoon..

With a bunch of prying. It's stupid. That's why I built my own adapter!
It is said carpet is installed by the square yard and removed by the pound. I have about 1,000 square feet of artificial turf. I vacuum it about once a month to get as much stuff out as possible, and rake in between. But with no sand, dirt, etc., to suck up I tried it without the filter and that works wonderfully! I found I can put my old Craftsman 5 hp vacuum in the middle and reach everything with a 25 foot hose. But I don’t have anything with leaves big enough to choke a 2 1/2 inch hose. And I’m retired.

@@DadItYourselfDIY That deflector just inside the canister makes the whole thing operate like a cyclone separator, so if there’s no very fine material, like dust, nothing but air makes it to the center top of the canister where the motor is pulling air out. Heavier stuff like leaves and acorns fall to the bottom. The vacuum moves a lot more air if there’s no filter.
Yeah, Ive seen people use a similar setup in their woodshops.

I like the idea behind the collection system but my gas blower would make much shorter work of those leaves. I think if efficiency was the goal here a more powerful unit might be better, if you had a substantial amount of leaves it would take far too long.

How do you loosen the strap? I cannot figure it out and the instructions just say reverse installation.
The strap on the universal adapter is nearly impossible to back off. Pull up on the silver buckle with lots of wiggling and pushing and such.

It picks them up without issue. An extended hose would be on the exhaust/blow end.

Looks promising on something with a better vacuum. I use backpack blower to a pile. Have the toro corded vacuum lying on the on ground. Replaced bag with corrugated pipe on discharge with a tarp as back stop. Pull up a seat and rake the leaves to vacuum😂

Not really, the performance vary with the size of the leaves and if they are dry or wet.

I had a vacuum that fits over a trash can like this that's better than a wet dry vac. If I needed significant water to suck up I could fill a 55 gal drum with water without stopping, same with trash.

How would you recommend using a leaf vacuum? I have a big backyard and a blower-vacuum-mulcher combo. How should I use it to clean my yard?
There are leaves everywhere.
I would use it for the edges, landscape beds ad hard to reach places. Use the mower with bag to pickup and mulch leaves in the open areas and on the lawn.

I suggest you purchase the Worx Trivac 3-in-1 Leaf Blower, Mulcher, Vac. I just got one and love it. I did not get the collection system but after this Video I think I will.
Just my visual opinion, the Works Sucks better, and the Mulch is much finer as well.
Not a fan of cords or having to buy into another battery system.
@@DadItYourselfDIY Yeah I never been a Fan of cord or batteries myself. But it is getting hard to find a Gas alternate Period for anything. I did get a Gas Mower and trust me, I looked for over a year before I got one I liked. And it has a battery on it. But a removable by hand. Electric Start and then Manual the rest of the way. I have bad Shoulders and can't pull the cord so easy anymore.
The Worx Trivac 3-in-1 Leaf Blower, Mulcher, Vac - is corded. I think this is one place you really need the corded power for Mulching non stop.
I have been stubborn about getting rid of my gas mower. Ill use it until it dies or the state government tells me its illigal.
OK OK Tried the Vac/Mulcher at my Mothers and WOW. Yes it sucked up the Pecans (not Green ones, I live in the south, they are not falling just yet) and mulched them so fine you could not even tell they were in the mulched results. I kid you not. I Love this thing even more already. Not had a single Jam yet.

TIM from Canada looking at this new system from WORX Leaf collection system. It would have been nice to have a second option of having some sort of attachment which would fit into a normal size leaf bag. If you could have a system that would fit inside your leaf bag as you are cleaning this up, this would have been a better option. Not Everyone has the option of having one of those big green garbage cans and not everyone has the option of using, a trashcan 85% of people put leave in disposable leaf bags. If this was an attachment they could have included along with what you get now would have been a better option but once again, the people who make this stuff usually do not use the stuff when you are cleaning up the leaves you are usually putting everything into paper roadside bags. This would have been a better option to have

Has anyone tried using a long ship vac hose Macgyverd so it’s dumped in the green bin? I like to be innovative and use what I have on hand.
I definitely want to try it with a longer hose, but I'm not sure if it has the power to blow it that much further..
Gosh, you would think they would have an option for, or an available longer hose or extension.
I'm going to do some research.. I have a feeling where they're is a sweet spot on the hose length... I'll give credit to Worx in that through their research that eight feet was the optimal performance length, fit in the box, and was a good price point. But doesn't;t stop me from trying.
I just lay my B&D vacuum on the ground and rake the leaves to the big nozzle. That's after I blow everything into wind-rows. On 1/2 acre with many trees 😬
Thats sounds likeva solid plan. Im on 0.15 acre.
Observation:
Looks in the store but warning:
1) The blower AND hose WILL clog constantly. You will be forever uncloging wih a stick. Especially in damp leaves.
2) The leaves are not reducing unless you use a mower and further-reduce collector. The garbage bin will weigh a ton.
3) You better have a place to dump! They never show that!
4) twigs will slow as well.
My solution is Deere rider, pull behind track vac, Deere 3320 w/ 6 loader. (40) track vacs ea year.

Also lots of 89 grade fuel.

Give me a good backpack blower and a rake! I'd die of old age at the speed that thing was sucking up leaves.

I had to laugh as you started to take the black part off, my first thought is get your reciprocating saw out! LOL I have 50 million leaves (or it seems like it) sucking them up two at a time just won't cut it! I'm glad you demo'ed this hunk of junk before I bought one!

I hope you can answer have pondered this and because I hurt my back years back doing stupid stuff - have looked for easier - better. Here are my thoughts - 1st I do not see the good in mulching. It gets damaged as something bad is always sucked in.
The goal is to get as much stuff in the rubber trash can that the city will pick up. I found that mulching caused problems but a same sized cut piece of thick wood on a strong pole pushed down and compacted as needed. So no mulching. I simply want to come up with a system that is powerful enough and the hose wide enough to suck fall leaves etc, into the container and to me it seems an 8" - 10" and up hose would suck most derbies into the trash bin which is the only goal. I like the idea of a wide enough hose with a handle that can be moved around in like a 10' circle before moving a bin on a dolly that can be taken to the street and covered before pick up. I have 10 bins with lids from home depot - take to street - city leaves them - then stack and move back to back yard. The mulching part bothers be because I do not care what it sucks into the bin as long as it is organic. Sticks are fine and anything larger would not fit anyway. So - think of a dolly with a bin corded to it to hold. Then it can be moved around with little effort. Suck the leaves as they fall, press contents down as needed - and take dolly to street and off set the bin. This to me is a way to make it easy and ongoing. I can't wait until all leaves are down because my neighbor has a huge oak that causes thousands of the helicopter things to fall. If left and they get wet - I have a mess. And so - have this set up and covered with a tarp - plug it in and suck up everything for that day or week - easily and be able to get the bin to the street. Ideas on strength of motor - size of tube appreciated, Work smarter not harder - blowing and sweeping only causes too much dust on the operator - too much time. So this is what I would like to put together using existing available parts - - - - and I love the way on your video that the top of a bin can be covered with ease. Compress down - continue - use dolly to get to the curb and repeat.
These units are commercially available, but usually not for the average home owner.

What I would like is a large hose - like the one shown which may be 8 or more inches - allowing things to clear being vacuumed. No mulching - each I have ever had get hung up. Goal is to have a hose with a diameter that is large enough to capture lawn debries - like leaves and small sticks and simply transport them to a container - for me that is a large heavy plastic garbage can with the round lid off - and I can pack the leaves down ongoing with something I build until the container is ready to go to the street for pick up. /Trying to figure out the parts- mostly the engine, Should that be like a Workz piece or just a large hose end with a handle? -pulling lawn derbies into a larger plastic round top container the city will pickup. I bought for various reasons 8 round top containers I would like to use and are a perfect size for the city.

That leaf vacuum doesn't look very strong at all. I have an older version Worx (probably 5 plus years old now) and it picks up way faster than that RYOBI crap. You should try one with this catch set up. I think you'd be happier. I do like the wheels on the end which most systems don't offer but if the suction power is lacking the tool is useless. I've been wanting to try this leaf collection system so thank you for reminding me. lol

Glad you demonstrated this with maple leaves, but it seemed pretty slow-going at that leaf size. Catching only a few leaves per pass seems to take away from the intended concept of the design. I think I'd prefer a lawn mower type apparatus for this kind of task.
It's not the perfect solution for everyone. But it has its place for sure!
Finally got to use mine and it kept clogging especially in the hose finally used the pitch fork and got it all up 🤷♀️

I've used worx for years with my craftsman. I'll be getting an ryobi leaf vac soon and will do the same thing. I actually put a can liner in my can with wheels

The cover for the Universal Collect do not just stay on the trash container while vacuuming It need to be a way that it can secured more.
The pull string can be tightened around the can lip.
Seems like it would be faster to pick up the leaves one at a time.

How well with this Lee system that’s in that box work with a Roby electric unit? Or even maybe a stronger more powerful type leaf blower vacuum? No, if you could get yourself some type of a wagon And place your trashcan in the wagon with a long handle or maybe set it in the back of a riding lawnmower attachment and you could just cruise around on your your lawnmower with your long vac hose off to the side swish in your hand back-and-forth picking up your leaves instead of walking and bending over let the machine to do the work!
If you get some type of PVC that you can attach, you could probably make a big hook or shepherd hook shape and suck all the leaves out of your gutters if your gutters aren’t too high up 😊

I would not try and suck up all those leaves with the vac but use a steel pan and rake for the majority of them and then get the left overs with the machine.
That's what I usually do, but it's not a good way to demonstrate the product. And that's how I make my $$
Well, after seeing that video my dad advice is to stay away from these underpowered leaf vacuum. I would have grabbed that pile of leaf in a single scoop for a fraction of the time it required to vacuum a few of them.
Undoubtedly, that would have been more efficient in that instance, but would have made for a terrible video.
Did your tool lose power once you hacked it? It sounded different and performed weaker.
No it's just an exhaust pipe, my battery may have been draining, and my camera is actually about 15-20 feet away, so the microphone pickup is different at that range.

This isnt a blower.. I have the 40v Turbo it does quick work when Ibwant to move stuff.

But you still have to bag them. Or do you blow them into a compost pile or are you allowed to blow the debris on neighboring or public property?
Mine stay in the can then the city takes them. It's a fine line on blowing yard debris into the street here.

That has to be hard on your back, personally, I gave up trying to do this about 15 years ago. I kept ruining the impellers on several of my blower vacuums, Now I just blow everything onto the sidewalk or into the street, I then set my mower to its lowest setting and then just run up-and-down the sidewalk with the mower a few times to mulch and bag it all up. From there, I simply empty the bagger right into my 95 gallon yard waste container. It's a much faster and easier on the back than trying to suck it up with a handheld blower.
Another good option. I need to get a shoulder harness for this and my edger..
I've been looking for the similar product that goes with my B&D leaf hog, but maybe this will work for me. I will say though, your power unit seems a bit weak. My Leaf Hog sucks em up much faster.

Think I'll pass on the Ryobi and buy the Works vacuum for a better fit and stronger vacuum. That CFM is horrid! From the videos I've watched on the Works WG518, it picks up the leaves much faster! Thanks for the review of the Works and the warning on the Ryobi!

When you Rake leafs you get it done faster & is a good workout at slow pace or faster. As you see here with this gadget. You must adjust your pace to it vise versa waste of time.That it will finally delay you as it will get you to start adjusting the gadget to make it feel that if you do it. You will get it done faster like quicker & the rain will catch up to you faster. Like it did….😢😮

You said: "Til it goes to the curb." Shredded leaves are "brown gold" for anyone who grows. You have plants. Why throw away mulch the feeds the soil, which feeds the plants? You said: "All mulched up." Didn't look very shredded to me! What is the ratio? My 30 yr. old B/D reduces 15-1, cost $100.
The "curb" is a green bin that is collected by the city. The yard waste is taken to a county facility where it is ground into yard mulch. Residents can pick it up for free to use in yards, etc.
I'm frustrated by the wimpy leaf equipment out there. I have 18 enormous trees! The equipment out there is like me trying to drink the ocean with a cocktail straw.
People in your situation either have professionals take care of it. Or own professional grade tools.
If it worked at normal time better than it does when you speed it up it would be great but unfortunately the city I live and does not have a container like that that you could put your compost in and they have to be bagged or small garbage cans my trash and my recyclable have containers like that but it’s a no and the leaves.
What about a getting a 55 hallong can put the bag in it, then the cover over that.

Yeah. They are talking about eliminating has powered lawn equipment now. Thankfully Ive mostly switched to 40v now.
Why didn't you use a leaf blower just to clear out the bed and blow them onto the grass then pick him up with the lawn mower and if not a lawn mower Landscaping rake and pull them together quickly
