In september 1999, while we were prepping the first issue of DVDvision magazine, Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman landed in Paris for a short press conference on the forthcoming Stanley Kubrick film EYES WIDE SHUT.
DVDvision attended the conference and covered it with 3 cameras. Here's the resulting footage for the 20th anniversary of the film.

Gosh, they were so breathtakingly beautiful in their primes. I was a kid when this movie came out, I remember seeing promos of it on TV. I was told it was controversial and I was too young to see it. Came to see it years later and was blown away, consider it the greatest movie of the phenomenal year that was 1999

One of my favorite movies ever. I've watched it too many times to keep count. Both are gorgeous & phenomenal actors. I've always been amazed at how sweet and humble Nicole has always despite being an A-list actress.

Really interesting interview. They’re both so articulate and switched on. It’s clear to see what they brought to the process and how Kubrick enabled that to happen. The result is in my opinion, a masterpiece

This was a great period for Tom Cruise's hair lol. Vanilla Sky, Magnolia, MI:2... Late 90's, early 2000's is probably my favorite Tom Cruise era.
what makes Tom is so insanely attractive coz he is so present in that press conference. I rarely see actors being so present and listens and cares what other people says.

All the people who are saying the movie was rubbish or frivolous... you literally watched it with your "Eyes Wide Shut". The movie requires the audience to open their eyes and see the hard truth that they would rather not see. It is a movie that you have to watch more than twice to fully appreciate what is going on :D

@@jennybrandt5188 hmmm I think you didn't understand it, which is not uncommon, this was the reason why the movie wasn't a commercial success as it went over most people's head. From the opening scene to the last dialogue the movie is communicating so much that you can write a book just on the analysis.
And you think you're so smart that you can see right through the movie and not interpret it as bad. But what if not everyone else but you are wrong and the movie is indeed bad.

Tom and Nicole really loved each other in their marriage. A real partnership. I don't think I've seen Tom as comfortable with someone since that time. I hope I'm wrong about that of course. Maybe it's just me making a false comparison because you always see Nicole so outwardly blissful in her marriage And Tom is more private.

I don’t think Cruise’s career direction was anything to do with Kubrick dying. They only did one film together.
He just seemed to choose less interesting roles from around 2005 onwards, really due to the success of his MI blockbusters.

Their body language is revealing. Tom is literally leaning away from Nicole and she's turned toward and leaning toward him. He divorced her shortly after this interview. She was devastated. Miscavage had Tom back under his spell. Still does.

Nicole may have been devastated by the divorce but I felt that she had outgrown Cruise.
So glad someone else noticed it. I thought he looked really distant and cold towards Nicole and she also picked it up when he interrupted her while she was expressing her view about movies should not be judged by the money it makes.
With hindsight of their divorce coming soon after this, I could see that Tom was not as tender towards Nicole...he seemed mildly upset that Nicole is speaking and she picked up on it and said "I am talking too much... I'll let Tom speak". Maybe I am seeing things that don't exist 😂😅
I'm not sure...she's very self-deprecating. That's very much her personality. I think they were both very sad while promoting the film because Stanley had died. Tom was also shooting MI2 and was very stressed due to problems with production.
@@newasblue1981 I agree she's often self deprecating but the fact that he didn't say anything to reassure her after she said "I am talking too much, I'll let Tom speak" was quite cold (almost agreeing with her that she was correct). I have been married for 21 years and to this day if I say something like this my partner would touch my hand or show some other warm gesture to show me that I can continue 😂.

Not to be a d**k, but did anyone else watch this through the lens of the marriage and eventual split just a few years later. It’s prett interesting reading their chemistry and seeing the contrast between their answers. The context that theyre both actor’s talking to the press about something that is personal has to be a challenge for them. Subtlety is fun to look for especially if you know the movie theyre in so well.
