2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sports | First Review

- Honda updated the Africa Twin for 2018 and unveiled a new version - the Adventure Sports. Bigger fuel tank, longer travel suspension, larger fairing. It's made to impress - one of the most beautiful bikes ever built.
Yes, the 2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sports looks good, but how does it handle? What about the ergonomics and riding position? What about the extra-weight? We tried to find out in our first review.

After fifteen years of dreaming about it I just bought exact one. If everything will go good tomorrow should be with me.
RIP Cristian. Watched this video earlier and just heard the news. It was always a pleasure to watch your work.
Thanks for your honest review. It cleared up a few of my questions about that bike.
I have been following your channel for a while and you guys always really impressed me with your reviews...
Cheers, Frederic.
The best review on this bike, by far. You guys keep getting better.
I really love your reviews. They're so thorough, unbiased, and very thoughtful with respect to executing reviews. Thank you so much for your videos!
Thanks for watching and subscribing to our channel. Where are you from?
I'm from the US (California). Hope to see you guys here someday.
The beautiful Carpathian Mountains. Love the place. I lived in Oradea for 2 years and travelled extensively thru Romania. I can’t wait to come back next year. Cheers for the review. Chris
18 months later and we have all those extra goodies on the 2020 Model!
Another great job DriveMag!
GREAT VIDEO AND BREAK DOWN OF THE TECHNICAL SIDE. I HAVE NOT SEEN A VIDEO THIS WELL DONE. VERY GOOD
Your Reviews are awesome. Thank you.
Mine is arriving this weekend, can't wait!!! I will add the first thing I ordered was a wind deflector that stops the updraft from the forks. When I put my hand over that gap in a test ride all the wind buffeting stopped immediately. This was using a shoei adv helm
Congrats! Enjoy the ride!
Hello could you give the link to the deflector for the forkshield. Thanks
Fantastic review! And thank you for answering my question, that is really useful, maybe a wind deflector then...however, from what you said, I think I need to go and try the standard one now, i will be doing a lot of commuting and city riding, so maybe a slightly lighter and slimmer bike would be a benefit, i would also prefer a top box too!
Great channel, keep the vids coming,
Cheers 👍
Thanks for watching. And good luck choosing your new motorcycle
Excellent review. Nice job. Congratulations.
Great vid, I enjoy the quality of the production of your vids.
Always a bit of a compromise when it comes to seat height, it does mess up the seat, handlebar, foot peg triangle with a lower seat, maybe lower the bars as well as the seat to retain that part of the triangle but then it maybe effect your standing position.
End of the day no bike fits all and you have to modify to fit you.
Hello there sir, what a great review on the new Africa Twin Adventure Sports, really loved your channel and the bike reviews you made. Keep up the good work sir and I am waiting for the new Yamaha Tracer 900 GT review.
Thank you! We're eager to test it, too
Thank you for the video. I would know, what helmet model did you wear?
Pretty nice video, good argumentation. Nice geographical place. Very professional work. Congratulations
Thanks for watching
Thinking of getting this bike in a few weeks
Question: You happy with the tires that are on it for fire roads etc?
Appreciate yet another excellent, in-depth review - I particularly appreciate your take on all the changes. While I am absurdly happy with my R1200GS, I am thinking about adding another model to my harem and this might be an excellent candidate overall - of course, I am quite curious about the upcoming KTM 790 ADV as well though 1st release models aren't always the best choice their first year so may wait a bit on that one before even considering it though it certainly looks to be ultimate, besting everything its class handily! This really is the BEST time for motorcyclists ever!
Thank you! We're very curious about the KTM 790 ADV too..
Good real world review. The terrain looks like the sort of mix I need a bike to handle. Not really technical singletrack, but some fairly rough “roads”, much more harsh than a road oriented bike should be ridden on. Looks like the suspension did a really good job on those bumps.
At my height, the standard Africa Twin is actually barely tall enough... I can put my feet flat on the ground with my knees bent, with the seat in the tall setting. So the taller Adventure Sports appeals to me. Yes, it weighs more, but that bigger tank is a huge plus for riding way out in rural areas, many miles/kilometers from the nearest petrol station.
Great video, very informative, thanks for posting. 👍
If you have to choose between tiger 800 xca and AT As. Which do you prefer ?
I cannot decide between ATAS, Super Tenere or Tracer 900 GT :).. Any input would be helpful.
Where did you recorded this review? The scenery is amazing :) Big thumbs up for your good work by the way!
Great review! Tell me please, if my height is 181 cm, is it convenient for me to be worthy to put my feet to the ground? Or do you need to order a separate saddle?
Very informative review - thanks for sharing 👍
Excellent review, thank you for your efforts.
Thanks for watching.
Would you prefer shaft drive on the twin?
great review! Sorry not sure if i missed it but did you mention how tall you are?
Good review. Currently considering this bike, with DCT and everything. Come from GSA LC (-16). I am a tall guy so the seat height, peg position and knee/leg angle felt great. I didn't feel the fuel tank was in the way, at least no more than one GSA. The windscreen was, as expected, fairly useless but I've yet to find any OEM screen that works perfectly out of the box. Fortunately Puig delivery a snap-on visor/spoiler that just might come to one's aid.
The only downer for me is lack of cruise control. Do you, or anyone else, have any idea if Honda will supply a cruise control on the 2019? Since it's drive by wire it's more now a question of a software update, plus some hardware changes.
How tall are you? It will help me to decide which 1 is best for me as I am 5 10
great review guys
What helmet are you using?
Fantastica moto una pregunta el asiento quanto tiene de alto porque se ve en una posicion baja yo con mi 1.70 llego a piso gracias por la respuesta.
Been waiting for this review since your recent unboxing video. It's a gorgeous bike but realistically probably a bit tall for me. I'd need it as much for commuting as for recreation. Will wait to try BMW's f850 and decide between it and the AT standard.
Good choice! Both are great bike. You can also consider the Triumph Tiger 800
I am riding a 2017 triumph tiger 800 xcx and done around 12k kms in 10 months or so. I am getting the range of 375-380 km per tank on 19ltrs tank capacity with refilling of around 15lts . So I was thinking what Honda has done with larger fuel tank if the range is still going to be 400odd km . I agree with you regarding the windshield extension as tiger has pretty good buffeting and windshield extender is better choice.
I'm 5'6" (167 cm) and the L2 is definitely too tall. I was afraid that even the standard model was tall but after test riding it in country roads and heavy traffic for an hour I felt very comfortable on it. I'll definitely get me one.
ThKs for the review.
Thank you for testing
Thanks for the honest review.
Nice, great vid!
Where was this shot?
How tall are you my friend?
Where is this?
You forgot to mention about the new display glare cuz I'm sure you will not able to see the details while riding especially with the sun visor down
What is your height ?
Gracias por las imágenes..!!
Nice honest review thanks
good video dude!. can u tell please how tall are u?
Big fan from Saudi Arabia! I am a big guy 195CM and 145KG , does that affect the bike suspension or engine? Kindly advise and perfect review!
How tall are you?
Tnx for review. It would be great to add informations in description regarding your gear, helmet, your height. U wouldn't have to answer over and over. :)
What is your height??
The windshield is too low for you. An extension will help. Nicer if they made windshields adjustable! How hard is that, Honda?
adventure sport - The best heavy enduro bike. No bulky engine , more possibility off road and top reliability ! definitely number 1.
Would you suggest to buy a basic DCT 2017 at a good price and with low mileage or make the additional effort/time and go for a newer one 2018, 2019?
Go for the newer, mostly because of the ride by wire being more precise and smooth especially on the DCT.
geting one soon but left over 17 not to heavy
Lowered seat allows you to set feet on the ground, but it also shortens the distance between seat and foot pegs. So after a while you feel cramped. Also, your arms will have to go higher to reach the handlebar, tiring them. Don't buy a tall bike with lowered seat if you want to use it on long distances.
Would you consider a rear sprocket of 43 teeth instead of the original 42 - and for even more low speed control 15 teeth for the front sprocket instead of the original 16. And 16 for highway
I wouldn't do it. For me it's fine right now. But it's my personal taste.
Thanks for the review! How tall/inseam are you?
Hello. I'm 1,74m
unfortunately installing the low seat is a bad idea, the bike is very tall and the ergonomics are designed for the original seat, the low seat doesn't leave enough room for legs causing knee pains after a while, if I could go back i would get the standard version, if you're not tall enough for the standard seat then go for the standard version..
Hello Marco, these were my thoughts too...
How about reducing pre load? Will that make it more rideable for 31" inseam 5'7" rider?
@@moredeneiro It help yes, thats what I did. but a 5'7 rider may have to drop it all the way down
How would you compare the Africa Twin to the BMW F850GS?
I can't put it all in a comment, but we'll make a comparison video soon: F850GS vs. Africa Twin vs. Tiger 800
Please compare to the GS 850 2018 , what you like better?
Or to go for the 2014 gsa1200???
You should do a comparison between this and the KTM 1090 Adventure r and this one.
I tested the Africa twin 2017 (standard) and was very close to buy it but then i tested the KTM without even a consideration to buy one from the beginning and that did it. KTM for the win hands down and i love it. The more i drive it the more happy i get for choosing that.
We'll try to find a KTM.
A nice honest review, I did concider this bike when I test rode it but instead I decided on a GS which I found a better bike for me. I also enjoyed seeing the roads that you were riding.
Which GS? The 850 or the R1200?
DriveMag Riders I went for the 1200 it was such an easy bike to ride, felt more stable on the road will be seeing what it's like on the trails in June when I'm riding the Spanish Pyrenees part of the TET
Very good job in this video. Very clear. Thanks. May I ask you how tall are you and which was the seat hight on the bike ? From what I read, we are above 90 cm, and clearly not for short legs... I'm driving a 2018 R1200GSA with BMW low suspensions, not able to climb on a standard one, and I am pretty sure this Adventure Sports version is much too high in any case. What's your feeling ?
I'm 1.74 m. I don't know exactly the seat height, but it was a low seat. But I am sure that if you can't ride a standard R1200GSA, this Africa Twin is too high for you. Don't go for the low seat, it can ruin the ergonomics. Try the standard one, instead.
Funny, same size than you. So skills, experience and confidence may help with such bike. Looking forward for watching your next video. Thanks.
Would be interested to hear your thoughts versus the F850GS.
Hello Mat. We'll have a three-bike comparison soon. F850GS vs Africa Twin vs Triumph Tiger 800
DriveMag Riders that's just perfect!
That would be great. Thanks.
The only reason not to buy Africa Twin AS is a KTM 1090 ADV R. Please make comparison between these two. In fact I still don't know Your thoughts about KTM 1090 R! Why?
Unde a fost făcută filmarea off-road?
In Bucegi - drumul dinspre lacul Bolboci spre Moroeni.
Mulțumesc!
i have given the 1k like..good review..
Superb
Saurav Kr Ghosh yes really nice... looking for this bike....
I want to work for your channel in India. How can i.join you..
What's the reviewer's height and weight? I ride a 2009 Multi and find the legs cramped compared to the standard HAT and I am 1.85m and just under 100 kilos. Working on the 100 kilo part lol. Won't have a chance to ride a HATSA until June...
Hello. Height: 1.74m. Weight - 75 kilos. You should be able to ride on the standard seat, but keep in mind that this one has a wider tank
The low seat will not work because the foot pegs are at the same point.
What brand jacket is he wearing?
yoshimitsu411 clover crossover 3
Mario Zadar thanks
Still no cruise control and tubeless tires?
Yes. Still no cruise control and tubless tires.
You can still put tubes in tubeless tires if that worries you. I think these bikes should all have tubeless spoked rims. I'm pretty sure more people make flats from cuts or punctures than from low pressure going over a rock. With tubeless tires it's an easy fix in most cases with a plug. With tubes, you're in for 1h of fun on the side of the road...
Good review. What gear are you wearing?
gary eggers i think its clover
gary eggers crossover 3 model
Hello Gary. Yes, Mario is right. It'a s Clover Crossover 3. I like it because it's very ventilated.
BTW, where are you riding?
Romania, in the Carpathians.
DriveMag Riders.... I have to make it there one day!
Which one you like your 1200 gsa or that bike?
The 1200 GS.
@@DriveMagRiders i watch your video on 1250 gsa vs 1200 gsa, is it worth it to spend extra on 1250 gsa than buying a $4000 less 1200 gsa?
How tall is this guy testing the bike?
Quilo B 174 cm
what is your height?? Thanks!!
I want to know too
1 70
2017’s are selling for a great deal as leftovers; is it safe to compare the standard versions of the 2018’s with that of the 2017’s? Is it worth to spring for the “latest-greatest, new-improved”
Depends on what you need. Do you really need four riding modes and a 7-level traction control? I didn't ride the standard AT 2018 yet, to see if there's any suspension improvement compared to 2017. This was the biggest issue for me. A suspension that generates instability in the corners
Im seeing that too. However, every gripe of the 17 was fixed for the 18. A larger fuel tank is a real deal breaker for me.
I don’t see this bike being up to par with Triumph XCA 800, any thoughts?
Have to disagree about your wind protection comments. I've had mine for over a year and ride visor up no problems. I feel my feet getting cold in the winter but nothing outside of normal.
Again, another great video with lots of info to consider. I know that there is no comparison between the Honda AT and BMW GS1200 Rallye with CC's, but as a over all off road, adventure, camping and carry of load, with lots of miles, what would you own if only one do it all bike please.
Thanks.
Not true they will be out selling them soon
BMW 1200 GS ... AT has almost the same weight as the GS .... The GS has the shaft and has a very lower center of weight ... If you want a bike for real adventure wait for ktm 790 adventure....
Hello. It's about what matters for you the most. About what you want from that motorcycle. Here's my personal view: If you're looking for better street manners and have the money, go for the GS. This bike is also very capable on off-road. If you're not interested about going that fast and want to spend less money, go for the Africa Twin. Check our in-depth comparison video between the AT 2017 and R1200GS. czcams.com/video/t6DLuoFKZg4/video.html
How much heavier than standard version?
Go to your local honda motorcycle site and check
Salut, te-au incurcat real scaritele pozitionate in dreptul picioarelor/ cand ai pus picioarele jos?, in mers ai specificat in film.
Oh you can install a top case but the problem is that with all this power the DCT will kick in all the time because it's going to want to lift all the time... any additional weight far back will definitely make it lift a wheelie
You mean the traction control? No problem, you can shut it down. :D
This bike is front heavy. You'll just as soon do a burnout if you give it the beans as a wheelie. It can be clutched up though.
Sounds to me that the better option is to get the normal AT then uprate the suspension if you want to do some really hard off road.
Do Honda sells a kit for the suspension or is it a third party seller?
No kit from the suspension from Honda, but as I heard, they reworked the suspension for the standard version.
Thanks for the review i’ve seen at least 50 reviews on this new model and you’re definitely The least enthusiastic that I seen .that discomfort you speak of is because of the lower seat
Wowow week wow, I like.
Good
Frumos pe Kiseleff
Thank you very much for your video...! Must Subscribe your channel!! C u on the road someday...!
Did I miss how tall you are?
174 cm (5ft 9)
Why do I always expect to see a goat appear in your videos?
Why do people with modular helmets always ride with it flipped open on the road in videos? lol
I do it just because I want to talk to the camera. Cristian
My compliments for your reviews, like the style and honesty. Very curious on which country you ride, looks familiar.. Me and my friend actually rode the old Africa Twins through Eastern Europe twice now. Here's the link: czcams.com/video/rpZQBgZLdz8/video.html
Thanks for the reviews!!
You look like a European Charlie Day.
Great bike. Too tall. 6 footers and up need only apply.
Billy Smith Learn to put a foot down and get good
Snipified 50,000+ clicks on my bike. Already great. The Honda AT is an amazing bike.
the normal aftrica twin is just the better deal.
She is a beauty, although the dashboard is unworthy.
Yes. The dash is not that good
смотря и слушая этого перца , я пришел к выводу он бухой
