    Holy crap, dude! At 5:22 you pass through a suburb of Mexico City called "Ciudad Satélite" (Satellite City). Of _all_ the places you could've chosen to show, you showed those "Towers of Satélite" in northern Mexico City near the area where I grew up (those "towers" are actually rainwater reservoirs)! They're somewhat famous among Mexico City residents, but not to the point that all people from Mexico City have seen them -- in fact, I would say that only around a third of people that have lived in Mexico City have visited that place, as there's not really much to do there unless you live nearby.
    I'm flipping out about this because of the ten million things you can see when you travel to Mexico City you chose to show that particular spot, which would be the Mexico City equivalent of saying that you went through some back road that took you through a tiny, middle-of-nowhere rural town in the US where one of your viewers happens to be from. Man, probably not even travel vloggers that have visited Mexico City have taken footage of those towers. I'm blown away!
    Ciudad Satélite is a suburb that was built from the 1960s through the 1980s to support a growing population of Mexico City residents that wanted a nicer, bigger house at an affordable price, compared to Mexico City itself -- and then grew over the years until making itself one of the main residential areas in northwestern-metropolitan area Mexico City for middle- to upper-income residents. People would then commute through the "Periférico Boulevard Miguel Ávila Camacho" road, which you took all the way from south to north of the city (it kinda does a loop). Those towers were designed by a famous Mexican Modernist architect called Luis Barragán (and Mexican sculptor Mathias Goeritz), and represented the "modern" future that Ciudad Satélite was advertised as in the second half of the 20th century. You probably saw that there's an overhead road on top of Periférico, which people refer to as "segundo piso" (second floor) -- well, maybe you also noticed that it goes back to road level when it goes through the towers, as Satélite residents didn't want their scupltures interrupted by an ugly elevated highway.
    Safe travels. Hope you had a great time in Mexico, and that you visit again soon! Cheers from Houston, TX!

      Mexico City is a total PITA traffic wise. As far as danger-wise, you're probably good pretty much anywhere as long as you stick to the downtown areas, they'll usually heavily guarded. I don't advise riding at night, and would avoid certain parts of Cancun. Which part of Canada are you leaving from?

    • @dirtymotorcyclevagabond
      @dirtymotorcyclevagabond  Před 11 měsíci +1

      That’s kind of a loaded question. I’ll do my best to answer. Generally people are not going to mess with tourists on a motorcycle. There are definitely exceptions though, and things seem to be getting more unstable… I think you’ll be fine if don’t ride at night. Just be aware, there’s always a risk. More than violence, I’m usually worried about other drivers.

    So my question ... I am interested in riding from Texas to Patagonia -- through Mexico alone. I have experience riding around the world -- Miami to Thailand and Cartagena to Ushuaia -- but both times with a small group. It also looks like you stay on pavement -- how safe is it to ride alone for mid aged man?

    • @dirtymotorcyclevagabond
      @dirtymotorcyclevagabond  Před rokem +2

      Well, I’m pushing 40 and I’ve been going alone at least, and often twice a year for the past 4 yrs… never had a problem. The “people who control the country” in general have more to lose by messing with the tourists than not. You do hear occasional stories of robberies, but they don’t seem to be particularly common. That said, it’s a good idea to use a lil common sense and not be flashy

      In 2009 I put 3300 miles deep inside Mexico solo. I was riding a Yamaha XT225. (54 at the time) I had the time of my life! I broke every rule that your not supposed to do. I ended up in very small towns in the mountains, stop, take off my helmet and everybody wanted to talk to me. It was obvious I was traveling as I was loaded down. I think the people were impressed that I was in their town. Nicest people you’d ever meet!
      I’m now 68 and just dying to do it again. I’d buy a Yamaha XT250 for the trip if I was to do it again. I spent 5 months working in the Philippines and bought a 125cc bike over there and put 7000 miles on it before my Mexico trip. I’m sure you are aware, but don’t flash any sort of wealth. Dress down, don’t act as though they are your servants and you won’t have any problems.
      When you come to the Military check points, as soon as it’s your turn to pull up to the guard, yell out,, NO ESPANIEL! They just waved me through ever time. ( I probably went through a dozen of them) They didn’t want to deal with me. Only once did the guard motion for me to get off my bike. All he did was beat my seat to see if it was packed with drugs, then on my way.

    • @dirtymotorcyclevagabond
      @dirtymotorcyclevagabond  Před 2 lety

      Depends on the layout of the hotel. At the very least, most of 'em have a gate they lock at night. I've been in some crazy subterranean dungeons where I've had to ride down a steep a@# ramp to the bowels of the hotel. Pretty common.
