Actually the string tied round the calf of the trouser leg was to stop little critters like field mice etc from running up the legs to get shelter from the work that was going on,and possible biting the men in an'awkward'place.Field mice were quite numerous when cutting or stacking hay and when they were disturbed the would scurry for cover and an open trouser leg would often look like a good place to hide.They were not just in the NE of Scotland,but also down in Ayrshire.I wore shorts haymaking
