Top Five Tips to Paint a Watercolour Peony
Flowers and Foliage episode 55: Top Five Tips to Paint a Watercolour Peony
Peony season will soon be upon us so let's get ahead of the game. Starting with my top five tips, I have broken down how to paint a 3/4 angle open flower. We will be doing a full peony project soon but this is the perfect place to start!
The subject of this tutorial was suggested by one of my Patreons. My patreons can choose the subject matter of 4 of my CZcams tutorials each month!
If you've loved learning with me on CZcams and want to enjoy a more interactive and tailored watercolour experience, here is a very special sneak peek at a few of the watercolour tutorials you can expect to find if you sign up for the Sweet Pea or Cherry Blossom tiers. bit.ly/3r0Ooxf

Colours we used (link below to buy paint tubes)I am going to name these in terms of the colours I am familiar with:
Alizarin Crimson
Permanent Rose
Cadmium Yellow
Green Gold
Cadmium Orange
Don't worry if you don't have all these colours, you can look at my colour chart episode (bit.ly/30r7stq) to learn how to mix your own shades from a simple 12 pan student range palette.
I'd love to hear your suggestions for things you would like to learn how to paint in the comments below.

This tutorial helps me so much. I love how you break down the peony and anchoring the petals. A light bulb went on, that ah ha moment.
So glad I helped
Harriet - I've tried to follow a few peony tutorials, but must say that your 5 tips gave me my best result yet! I have a bit of practice to do, but showing the mop brush, the drawn line to anchor, it's all so helpful! Thank you Harriet. You are my favorite wc artist.
Thank you so much, it's so great to hear that!
Thank you so much! This was probably the best peony tutorial I’ve seen. I’m still having a little trouble but you have made it so much more understandable ❤

Hi Harriet! I've been painting "ball-shaped" peonies for 4 years, but never thought to create more shadows and layers for realism. Thank you so very much for your kindness. I always enjoy your beautiful florals.

One of the best teachers & my favorite on CZcams besides Mr. Paul Clark & Emma Jane Lefebvre.
Request to paint lotuses, water lilies & maybe your take on passiflora or passion flowers as there are over 20 varieties of them!

I guess im asking randomly but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot my password. I would love any tips you can give me!
@Oliver Kevin Instablaster =)
@Briggs Jefferson i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and im in the hacking process now.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Briggs Jefferson It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my account !
Thank you I never thought about painting a peony in that perspective.
Glad it was helpful!
So pretty.
Thank you! 😊
lovely.
Thanks Julia!
Really pretty
Cheers Olga!
Hi from Venezuela, I enjoy your tutorial incredible. Thank your very mucha.
You are welcome!
Trying to follow along with your excellent tutorial, I used five small pieces of paper…five because each of the previous tries weren’t acceptable. The fifth, though not good, was the best of the five, so I stuck with it. With much more practice I may actually have a decent peony. Thank you for sharing your tips.
Wonderful! Keep going and don't give up
Very good class
Thanks and welcome
Your petals that flop out look so good! Mine look like dead fish! I shall keep practicing.
It’s all about practise!
Thank you so much! ))
You are welcome!
Hi I just wanted to thank you for your tutorial on painting a peony. I’ve been struggling with the shape and for the first time after watching your steps, it finally looks like something 😁 I’m a beginner and I was really struggling with this shape. I truly appreciate your tips. I wish I could send you a photo but I don’t think it’s possible on this format.
You are so welcome!
Toll!!!!!👍👍👍👍🤗🤗
Super!
How do i become a patriot? I thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial. I am new to watercolors and love it. Thank you for the step by step tutorial .
Hi Pamela, thank you so much. You can join my patreon here: www.patreon.com/dewintonpaperco
So many things I love about your lovely tutorials. I like that you are methodical, so we know where we are going - how to draw the flower, and how to mix the colors. I like that you bring us from general to the details that make the flower pop at the end. Thank you for talking to us as we go through the video, and thank you for the background sound that has the sense of intensity that we feel as we concentrate on the project. Is your new book going to be available in the US soon?
You are so welcome! Thank you Anna. Yes I'm sure the new book will be available in the US. At the moment the only info I have is the pre order on Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/Birds-Bees-Blossoms-Step-Step/dp/178157832X
Thank you so much for your informative and easy style of teaching. I’m interested in what one does to be a patron? Jennifer
Hi Jennifer thanks for your message. Just watch my ‘join my patreon community’ video and you’ll get all the info you need. There is a link to join up in the episode notes of that video
I cant wait to try this ❤️ my exams just got over yaaay
Thanks!
Another lovely flower. I have had a look at brush link, can't work out which is the really large one you have used?
Ignore I have just seen someone else asked the same question. Note to self- read comments first!
no worries but here is a direct link www.artsupplies.co.uk/brushes-series-100-connoisseur-brush-round.htm
Your 5 tips were so helpful to get me started on my first peonies. Anchoring and starting pale were the best!! Thank you so much. I’m enjoying your videos and instagram! Did you mention a book? I have to look for it!
I'm so glad!
@@deWintonPaperCo I found and purchased 2 books! Very happy!
This is absolutely lovely! Could you possibly do a similar technique but for a poppy? Poppies are my goal. Thank you. I just adore your videos. Cheers!
I'll consider it. My Patreons get to choose up to four subjects a month for my youtube tutorials if you have more requests in future.
Another fab tutorial thank you.
I hope you don't mind me pointing out that your Patreon subscribers are your 'patrons' not your patreons😉
Looking forward to trying this peony
I know but I like to call them that!
@@deWintonPaperCo Oh very funny 😂
I'm unsure which size mop brush you recommend ?
Check the episode notes Lynda. I used a size 12 from the connoisseur range
Confused Pedantic Aspie here. That large brush looks a lot more like a pointed round brush than either a mop brush or a rounded point brush (whatever that is). 😉
Thanks for your comment, always good to have details people on hand., it is a rounded point brush from the connoisseur range but it acts like a mop for the purpose of this job. I am self taught and have to be true to how I find using the materials. I give the details of the brush in the episode notes.
@@deWintonPaperCo I will have to follow the link then. I have heard of a pointed round brush but never a rounded point brush!
