  • The LEGO Technic NASA Mars Rover Perseverance 42158 is an excellent concept! In fact, it is the first LEGO Technic space set since 1996! However, with the lack of a gearbox, as well as a poorly working suspension, the set is far from perfect.

    I am surprised by the complaints about the suspension. It mimics the suspension on the actual rover, which is of course not designed to be pushed/towed or to maneuver over boulders as big as the wheels. If you want it to do those things, you should expect to have to mod it. Personally, I'm glad Lego stayed true to the design of the actual rover.

    4:44 : a small rock : just as in many cases, everyone should remember 2 things : the size ( or the scale, because irl your small rock is a nearly 55 cm high, which is a lot) and the speed of the actual thing, which is way slower, and should be even slower thanks to the size reduction of the wheels...
    Also, in theory as mentionned by Unbrickme, the wheel doesn't roll simply on the ground, but is motorized ( each 6 of them ) but i dont think anyone would criticise the lego model for that...
    Right?

      Too expensive. Plus motorising the wheels decently would be out scope without having something like 10 tiny motors.
      Also, a realistic movement would be so crazy slow most people would just be frustrated.

    All the wheels on the Perceverance rover are powered, and I guess it performs quite well for the terrain that they chose to traverse.
    It is unfair to compare this kit to a much more expensive 4*4 set with rubber wheels.

      @seankelleher4222 isn't it made just to be that? A model, not a play set, like the BMW M1000RR, it have working suspension and gear box (not the rover tho) but that's more to show off of it not to be played like a Star Wars set

    • @ENCHANTMEN_
      @ENCHANTMEN_ Před 10 měsíci +2

      IRL the power comes from the wheels and the suspension passively moves along with it. When pushing the model by the chassis, you're making it do the exact opposite, which it's not designed to handle.
      Unfortunately there's not really a way to fix that to allow it to be pushed by the body without making the suspension unrealistic, and making the wheels powered would be very difficult unless you used six separate motors.

    The suspension of the LEGO Technic Mars Rover Perseverance works terrible probably because the LEGO wheels are made out of plastic. And they slip when they hit the obstacle, therefore the model is stuck. The real rover's wheels are made out of aluminum, but I'm sure real rover wheels are designed so that they don't slip. By the way, the real rover drives VERY slow. It is slow like a turtle.

    I have the set, it's really sad that they could not make the suspension work. And that the last two bits of the arm to be manually turned instead of trying to make them have some sort of wired thing to make it completley controllable on the back, but It's still fun to play with. I also didn't like that the big rover camera eye has a fish-eye look, because the real one has a hole with glass before it goes outside the head. but anyways it's a nice thing to watch on my shelf.

    • @SerbijaSupreme
      @SerbijaSupreme Před rokem +2

      Well, the suspension works exactly like it does on the real one but the difference is that all 6 wheels are powered and the "small" rock he used in the video is huge if we use the same proportions to the real thing, also remember that it's super slow

    I agree with the suspension after getting my own 42158. I really wish the wheels didn't sometimes have a mind of their own and turn when i literally haven't touched the turning knob. Thankfully, it does look very cool. but, that was a given, seeing as it's a mars rover.

      @@NitroBoost43 I tend to aggree. I have this set and I love it. I spent hours with my son looking at how this all works. The wheels falling off when you pick it up is a bit annoying, but the suspension works incredibly well keeping the rover level while the wheels go all over the place. The kids having to spend a good 5 minutes moving the arm where they want it is just a bonus :P

    Excelente descubrimiento de este canal. Me suscribo ❤ desde España.
    Tengo el Perseverance pero siento que este set, ha sido diseñado para ser barato de adquirir, por debajo de los 100$ y eso conlleva innumerables fallos que lo hacen un vehículo de exposición casi para niños, poco técnico y con muchas partes mal implementadas.
    Hubiera pagado gustosamente 50-70$ más por…
    -Buena implementación del sistema de dirección mediante engranajes dentados a las ruedas, y no esa basura incontrolable de engranajes en cruz.
    -Un simple eje pasador de 1 agujero más de largo con un anillo al final que mantuviera las ruedas en su sitio, ya que se sueltan constantemente. Es frustrante.
    -Mejor sistema de control del brazo robotizado. ¿Tan difícil sería su control total?
    -Giro mecanizado de la “cabeza”, al menos a izquierda y derecha, y un mejor acabado de la parte superior. Queda tremendamente fea esa exposición de los pines técnicos.
    -Un mejor sistema para los paneles de energía en la parte trasera. Se sueltan o cambian de posición con tremenda facilidad al coger el Rover.
    -Más detalle en todo el conjunto, al nivel del Perseverance real. Esto con 20 o 30 piezas adicionales de Lego, hubiera sido más realista.
    -Respecto a la suspensión, es cierto que tiene sus limitaciones, pero siento que es el menor de los problemas si se tienen en cuenta los demás.
    Dentro del set, hay un espacio enorme desaprovechado para implementar estas mejoras y muchas otras para un correcto control del mismo, que insisto, es malo, poco preciso y desesperante a veces.
    Es de los pocos sets de Technic, que no puedo prestar a mis hijos para que de diviertan un rato con él, porque hasta las funciones más básicas, acaban desmoronando la experiencia de uso y acaban con él dañado.
    Es un quiero y no puedo de Lego. Mi hijo se lo enseña a sus amigos en la estantería, pero tiene que advertirles de que no se puede tocar, o empiezan a saltar por los aires las ruedas y otras piezas.
    Tremenda desilusión en líneas generales que, con mejor diseño y un precio mayor, hubiera sido una maravilla. Así, no lo es.
    Lástima.
    Saludos.
