  • Philip Glass - Music With Changing Parts
Philip Glass's early works have purely functional titles, and this one is no exception. His masterpiece in this repetitious and rigorously structural composition style-- Music in Twelve Parts--may be just too much for some people to take. If so, then this disc may be just the ticket. Of course, Glass's many fans will snap it up as a matter of course, but as the title implies, there's somewhat more happening here than in his very first minimalist works--just enough so that newcomers to the style ought to find something to enjoy. An important disc, then, both as a milestone in the history of a major musical movement and a reminder of style that the composer has long since abandoned. --David Hurwitz

I came here after someone pointed out to me this piece sounded in tone and structure like another tune that did amaze me - which is Steve Reich's Phase patterns.I have yet to agree as of the similarity but this piece is mind boggling in its own way

Thank you very much for posting this -
I'd like to say that It's not the Icebreaker recording that the video still suggests,
it's the original recording of the Philip Glass Ensemble :p

Yes, it’s the original recording, and by far the best version. It’s my favorite Philip Glass piece.

This is pretty bad but it's him finding his footing in using his music theories for the first time which remained as hallmarks for his sound design and I like him because I like the cinematic feel he brings to his tracks- he certainly learned how to elevate certain movie scenes with his music, but yeah, this is really pretty bad as its rudimentary and repetitive....Glad he pursued music and improved his craft though. A lot of people want to be as great as him or another but give up too soon after producing something like this.

@Andres Fontanez, his repetitive music is both a feature and a bug. I find this is true for most people, whether in the arts or not.

Its minimalist to the core, you can almost throw a 4x4 beat and you would have a minimal tech track lol.

"...this is really pretty bad as its rudimentary and repetitive.." Perhaps unintentionally humorous on your part? I love this music. You obviously don't understand it.

There should be more performances of this piece. With this instrumentation, I think.

I'm glad to have finally found THE ONE who can say whether a piece of music is good or bad. Until now, I was limited to liking or disliking, but I hope to be able to read more such enlightened and nuanced opinions so as to avoid "bad" music.
