  • The Talyllyn Railway is the first preserved railway in the World, known affectionately as 'The Railway with a Heart of Gold'. It was over 150 years ago, in 1865, that the line opened and in 1951 the Preservation Society was born to take over the Railway after the death of the owner Sir Haydn Jones.
This 2 foot 3 inch narrow gauge railway was steeped in history, and was the spark that ignited the preservation movement and our locomotive for the day No 2 ‘Dolgoch’, was in action hauling services alongside No 7 'Tom Rolt'.
Interestingly ‘Dolgoch’ built by Fletcher, Jennings & Co. is one of the oldest locomotives still in active service, delivered to the Talyllyn in 1866.The locomotive holds an important place in railway preservation history as it was the only serviceable locomotive on the Talyllyn when it became the first preserved railway to be operated by volunteers, in 1951. ‘Dolgoch’ kept the railway going during this first season.
The railway is also synonymous with Rev W Awdry, author of the Thomas the Tank Engine novels, when in 1955, he wrote ‘Four Little Engines’ the first of seven books about the Skarloey Raiway, which was based on the Tallylln. It was also credited as the inspiration for ‘The Titfield Thunderbolt’ film of 1953.
We made a steady climb from Tywyn Wharf to Abergynolwyn for a short layover, before continuing through the stunning landscape to Nant Gwernol, where ‘Dolgoch’ ran round to retrace its steps, winding back through the countryside to Tywyn Wharf. Cracking trip on this historic line today! | 22.06.2024
