Half Life 2 atmosphere is the best atmosphere in any game ever. That's why it's still relevant in 2023. This is why i played it 2 months ago and that's why i will play it again soon. Best frigging atmosphere.

Its just a railway bridge over the sea, but even after 18 years it still gives me chills
The bridge part was always that.. let that sink in part of the game for me. Realizing the world your currently walking in, the amount of death, destruction, misery and exhaustion around you. Just how bad the situation is for the human race, how much crap they had to go through and how much more trying to rebel. And the combine. Pacing together theories about the combine throughout your journey and slowly realizing just how incredibly evil it is. I can probably write an entire essay on the combine alone. If there is one game that keeps you thinking throughout its entire campaign and after, it's Half-Life

It's also very uncanny, like there's something always lurking in the background, beyond Freeman's control and comprehension.
Kelly Baily intentionally used the same intro soundtrack as the one that played at the very beginning of the game, when the Gman pulled you from stasis. I think it's explicitly being used this way to force the player to reflect, since if the player was listening to the intro, this would sound familiar to them, and maybe remind them of the events occurring, if only just for a moment. A momentary pause to think is all you need as the rotting, once-human infrastructure is now dominated by the alien machinery that's constantly rolling above, overhead.
I think that lab practicum is a very complex statement and introspection into the setting at large, spoken very subtly through both the visibly rotting yet sustaining infrastructure, the visibly draining oceans, the absolute domination of the combine, and the absolute desolation imposed upon mankind in the setting.
Not only that, Gordon woke up from stasis only knowing the last thing that happened was going to xen and killing the nihalanth to close the portal, not knowing what was to come. The next thing, a business man that has a familiar but unfamiliar face approaches him, congratulates him, and gives him a lack of free choice. But when he wakes up, he is being thrown into the world again with no breifing on what's happening. Just 2 citizens wearing uniforms on a train that smells like sorrow.
Half Life 2 is the best fps game ever. Even maybe the best game ever. I can't think of a single fps game better than Half Life 2. Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite, Stalker are up there but not quite there, Half Life 2 sits on peak of fps games alone. Half Life 2 is simply perfect in every way imaginable.
so nostalgic, I remember playing this level in the early morning one day after I stayed home from school because I was sick. There was even that early morning fog outside which really added to the experience. Legendary game.

I love Half Life, especially HL2 and its episodes, but frankly we just need more games with lots of attention to detail, a good, solid engine making them available to everyone, and stories with depth and meaning.
Way too many asset flip, 5-minute development multiplayer make-your-own-content cop-outs nowadays.

I think, it one of the important places for the whole videogame industry and gamers. From the game design, technical and style perspective it is such a good map. I remember replaying it dozens of times, from the times, when i was a little kid to till present.
I think, it is the quintessence of half life 2 as the phenomenon, including the unique ambience of the game - alien-like, lonely, post-apocalypse. Every time it gives me chills
The music really drove home the precarious environment on this part. So much tension, so much cold sweat, just remember to breathe and watch your step.

me and half life 2 are the same age, always was something i wanted to play when i was young because in my baby photos, in the background there where posters for the game. now, 20 ish years later i know why its so good.

I call this scene The Last Temptation of Freeman. Forget about fighting the overwhelmingly strong and cruel enemy, and just climb down and find a cave to live in and fish every day and catch birds for your survival.
What happened to the gaming industry? They just don’t make em like this anymore.
Things are rough these days and who knows what the future holds. However, I'm happy that we at least got to experience this masterpiece and have some fond memories to look back to.
They made Half Life: Alyx two years ago!
Well half life alyx and doom eternal was made, 2 enjoyable modern games.

@@felixftw4702 For me Half Life 2 is the perfect game and the best fps game by far. I really can't find a single flaw in Half Life 2. I'm playing a modern fps now, Wolfenstein New Colossus and despite it's an amazing game i miss Half Life 2 while playing. So i will play Half Life 2 again when i finish Wolfensteint New Colossus.
@@urazsoktay5275 good to hear. i just thought the gunplay was underwhelming the last time i played it. i mostly used the shotgun or the smg even though the game lets you carry like 9 weapons and despite the source engine having next-gen ragdoll physics for its' time, the combine kind of just stand there and then fall to the floor when you kill 'em. it kinda frustrated me
