This video was the reason I went with a cargo trailer! Haven't had a single regret! Versatility is the best thing! I can live in my trailer and still use it to haul things! I hated my rvs and my last pop up camper!
I work as an RV technician, I will be building my own, working on them all day I would not waste a penny of my money on a junk RV. Anything I can afford is JUNK and built like garbage by unskilled minimum wage workers. Trust me on this, I fix poor workmanship and cheap parts all day long, correction cheaply made parts but expensive to buy. Only thing I dont agree with is the Mr buddy heater, the catalytic heaters cause mad condensation inside your unit. If you use a furnace from a small camper that has no blower it has very little electrical draw and with a chimney to the outside you dont get the water vapor with the heat.

I've seen vids illustrating the cheap construction of campers. and, anything used is bound to have water damage. seems like the ultimate cheapo method would be to get one free or for a few hundred bucks, light it on fire, sandblast, paint, and build it from scratch. it all adds up as they say but i cant see it being a whole lot.
What about marine heater, would that work?

I am going to add to your list of 10. Room. I am in a wheel chair and the new rvs arent set up to handle them. Also if you haul a camp trailer and your tow vehicle breaks down you can still live in it while the vehicle is being worked on. :)
I get it. My daughter is in a wheelchair and I have been researching affordable camping options for 2 years. I’m so tired of hotels and being limited to finding campgrounds with ada cabins. On our last road trip in April to Ohio then to South Dakota and back to California I saw a toy-hauler with the ramp down and had a lightbulb moment so started researching those. I found what I believe will work for us. It’s called a Vymeron. After talking with another family who has a child in a wheelchair and owns a Vymeron I placed my order. We will pick it up late September. I went pretty minimal. No tanks. No sink. No heater. No frig.
I know this is years later... but what is your lift solution?

I've had my 6 x 12 cargo trailer now going on 7 years, and love it! Had it built and pre-wired at the factory, with 6'-6" interior height, rear barn doors, and a RV type door lock, then finished it out inside based on how you and Randy did yours! No windows, so pretty much total stealth. With 300 watts of solar on the roof, I have all the power I need for computer and small Dometic fridge and my tv and a lamp. I have it set up very simply, and am EXTREMELY comfortable! Would not trade it for anything!
Well, I went with the 6 x 12 single axle because I felt that was the smallest size I could be comfortable in. Have camped in mostly National Forests and the deserts of Arizona, boondocking, no hookups with no problems. I DO NOT PAY for camping! The solar is (3)-100 watt panels feeding into (2)-100 amp hour AGM batteries via a 30 amp MPPT BlueSky controller and a 2300/4600 watt PSW inverter.
I think you would be OK, the 318 is a good engine. I pull mine with a E350 Super Duty, and its less than 1800 pounds loaded.

After watching this video 6 year ago I bought a 2010 Haulmark 7x14 cargo trailer that was already set up for camping by the original owner. I have since done extensive modifications. I still have it and still love it. I just had a trailer hitch installed so I can use a cargo carrier with my Predator generator. I ahve a couple of videos showing what I did. Thanks Bob!
Bob, I'd watched this la year ago when I was first envisioning my travel vehicle arrangements, and even now, as I am much further along (with a van purchase, floor, sofa-bed semi-conversion behind me...and thinking more towards designing my own cargo lighter trailer to pull with it, this has helped me once again solidify my thinking and clarify my vision for what matters most to me...and I just SO appreciate how you and your most helpful insights have been so very helpful, Bob...and every so often I just have to pipe up and say so! So many different agendas in the industry, and many well-meaning...and maybe some not so much...people pushing different things that I often hear about later as being problematic in many ways, and so often not worth the headaches. In the midst of all that, your presence and voice has been a breath of fresh air...so many, many times, and I can't thank you enough!

A great example of keeping it simple. With a little DIY skill, you get exactly what you want for your travel needs.
PSA: Mr. Buddy heaters are not designed to be used indoors without adequate ventilation. Don't turn one on in a cargo trailer with all the windows closed and go to sleep.
Not true, they are approved for indoor use in 48 states. Only two nanny states prohibit their use. They have built in low oxygen protection.

@@targeted4truthjahsun No, I called Mr Buddy and asked. They do have two models. One is sale in 48 states, the other is for sale in two nanny states CA and MA. I asked what the difference was, and they told me the warning on the box was the only difference. Perhaps you should call them and ask for yourself.
There has been recent reviews on this done on CZcams with digital carbon monoxide detectors. Perfectly safe
@@StevenPfeiffer It really never is safe because the by products of combustion are still there. Cause cancers and respitory illness. Get one of those cheap Espar style diesel heaters from eBay and it will vent 100% outside. Don't run buddy heaters. They might not kill you immediately but they are hurting you

@Fernando G Thank you for asking about me and my trailer. I am working on it. I treated the bed liner of my cargo with a treatment for rust. I put up stabilizers so it's not wabbley and my material from the hardware store arrived a few days ago. I've gathered some tools from friends and the fun begins.

Nice video. I agree with you 100%... My first was a 12 x 6. Lasted 4 years and ran out of space. then a big one. 32 ft x 8 ft.. Had it for 14 years and a semi took out my tow diesel truck that pulled it . The 32 footer was my mobile studio, camper, boat hauler, car and motorcycle hauler, and camper. I loved it. Had no truck to haul it so I had to down size to a 24 foot and now I have to start all over again. Oh well. I fully agree a cargo trailer is the best choice. You can make it your dream on wheels. My new one will look like the inside of a boat and be cool for me. Good luck to all the trailer buffs.

Bob gives the best advice and as he has lived this life style longer then most of us take notice as he knows most things. The most important thing in life is a safe place to sleep and when your eyes are shut you don't see your surroundings. There is nothing wrong with pooing in a bag in a bucket it's only food what has been in your own body. Then just bin it like you would dog poo. Why waste huge amounts of money on items just so your rig looks good when you can live cheap. This life style is about the great out doors not like been a prisoner in your rig. I'm 60 years old and spent a huge part of my life living simple on the road less travelled. I don't care what others think of my life style I've traveled all over the world saved a fortune on rent and property taxes. Most people just show off with items they have on credit they may look nice but that's not living. Keep it simple I'm truly happy and Bob certainly is with our simple life styles. what you don't have no body can steal from you.
Sorry you're giving up your prize trailer. I know all about letting g stuff own you, I moved from 1800square ft to 1200 to 700 square ft! All boxes now, little furniture. But , it's paid for, it's 1.5 acres fenced in, my dog loves it. Just not nearly far enuf out! When I moved in here, I remembered WHY I left Atlanta! Just not nearly far enuf out! Back out of the driveway into a two lane hiway... 😵 I really like your trailer! The way you had it before. Lovely, just enuf.

I'm so amazed this popped up in my feed! My Husband and I are currently right in the middle of our cargo trailer conversion build. If I had the chance to go back and make a choice whether I wanted the cargo trailer conversion, or the traditional travel trailer I would choose the cargo trailer again and again. I know that everything in my trailer is installed because we want it in there. I don't have a lot of weird electronics or complex plumbing to deal with, and it will be paid off in about a year or two. VASTLY different than what it costs to buy a travel trailer. Buying a cargo trailer for converting was the best idea my Husband and I have ever made in regards to this. Thank you for sharing your experience with them. Maybe more people will be interested in the concept. 😊

@Kevin j , forgive me for jumping in here but, there are literally hundreds & hundreds of You Tube videos available. Just enter Cargo Trailer conversions in the You Tube search engine.
I'm not a member of that site, but I will give you some pointers here Kevin. There are TONS of people on CZcams who have videos that chronical their builds from start to finish. Also looks for the the online forum; "teardrops and tiny trailers". It's a forum for people who do home builds like teardrops and cargo conversions. Lastly, there are two groups on facebook (if you are on there). Look for "Cargo Trailer Conversions". A lot of the members of those two groups are in the middle of their builds or are new (like me), but there are other people who are members who are just starting out.

Wow ! I'm 6'5". Been viewing your Videos & Conversions of Regular Vans, High Top Vans & RVs. Also Pickups with & without towing Trailers. Viewed this same Video at least one year ago. KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid. I've gone through the ' Round Robin ' on this. Conclusion: Either a Regular Large Van or a Basic 4X4 Pickup with a Cap towing a Modified Cargo Trailer - Stealth. A simple, progressive way to go. It would be real nice to buy an Oversized High Van - New and/or used - could cost a fortune before/after a conversion. As always, you stress " Buy CheapRVliving " . I recently built out the inside of a 6x12 cargo trailer, but its not for living in: its a combination toy-hauler for my bike and a portable ham radio station with fold-up desk and full power and antennas to the radios. I pull it with a van and the van is where I sleep.
Perfect 2 room apartment/mancave on wheels!

I picked up an elderly 5x6 cargo trailer a couple of months ago to tow behind my VW T4 van. It's rusty and the rear doors are bent, but I'm going to have so much fun fixing it up to be my luxury bedroom on wheels.
My van will still be able to be used on shorter trips in the mean time, but eventually, once I manage to push my last child out of the nest, that will be me, full time on the road. :)

Have a tire man you trust make sure that your wheel hubs are road worthy. Older 'elderly' wheel hubs had to be greased more often than modern hubs and there bearings replaced as routine maintenance. A bad wheel bearing can cause a catastrophic crash. Be safe.

I’m only part way through your video and I already agree with you 100% ! I had a motorhome, my parents had a couple of house trailers, my sister and a nephew Aldo have and have had hose trailers. All were built cheap! Leaks and appliance issues, just 2x2 framework covered with an aluminum skin.

Thanks Bob, you convinced me to design a cargo trailer to RV Camper.
The only thing I would caution anyone on is to buy the "RV Door" option for the side. That's the door we're used to seeing with a door knob. With a cargo door as shown, you're exposing yourself to the danger of being locked inside with no hope of exit.
I keep a 9mm and a .45 to shoot my way out !👍

Sept. 2021 went to TrailersPlus and bought a 6×12 interstate loadrunner with the barn doors and white color ;-) towed it with a 2005 gmc savama 2500 4.8 4 sped automatic.

Love all 10 of your reasons. All make sense. I almost went that route but ultimately decided on a new, small TT. There are also pros to having a TT, as I have determined that there are pros and cons to every single motorhome/ travel trailer/cargo van/cargo trailer choice. All depends upon one's budget, one's lifestyle, and one's overall situation. I wish you all the best.

Thank you for that great video and advice. I ended up purchasing a Interstate Victory 6x10 trailer. I did find out that the Victory is structurally the same as the the upgraded Loadrunner if you get and painted model i.e Pewter, Champagne or Black the skin is .030 instead of the the White Victory which is .024 ,the only other difference is some cosmetic add ons. And it was $250.00 less

I've been looking at options for a travel trailer that could be off-grid for a few days at a time for an around-the-country road trip. I recently stumbled upon the idea of converting a cargo trailer and decided I had found my answer. As you have said here, price, durability, no systems to break, the ability to make it what *I* want it to be...perfect! Thank you for showing us yours. :)

I just bought a used 4x6x5 V-nose with the ramp. Converting it to a camper/toy hauler... Added 2 windows on the road side and a 26x36 door on the passenger side. Short cabinet in the "V" will hold a 32" TV, Speakers and all elec equipment. Thinking of a ramp room extension!
Bob, I've been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now and I must say that they are some of the most informative on the subject. We've been thinking of going on the road and this vid about a cargo trailer was invaluable. Thanks you so much for your willingness to share your experiences and what you've learned. Great vid, thanks for sharing. Funny, I'm interested in portable liveable spaces and had drawn many of the exact same conclusions as this after going over various possibilities. One major one reason I think was overlooked is the insurance cost as a non motored trailer is much less. Another related to this is unlike a motor home/rv if an engine has trouble your compartment is a separate item/can be moved still or used with another vehicle. Another, is that unlike a truck camper, the shape is independent of the vehicle so can be carried by various types, such as your van.
I bought a 24”travel trailer for $3,200 and just looked for signs of wear and tear that you mentioned. Was not the first one I looked at by any means. I have a shower, toilet, sink, can sleep 6, and central air and heat. Hands down travel trailer.

Right I bought a 1997 sandpiper for 2,000 the only problem was a cat urine smell and fleas but I paid a carpet cleaning company and I bought fogged and it’s going good

We bought someone else’s problem RV a year ago. It was a money pit. Lived out of it for the summer then finally sold it. Now we are bouncing back from the debt and I think we may just do this...thanks! 💛
I'm no expert but to me the RVs always looked like they are designed to break. I mean, you are basically driving around a house that was constructed in the cheapest way possible by the manufacturer.

Just a note of caution, some free or low cost campgrounds will not allow this. They insist on a self-contained RV and they will check the registration.
and you dont want to give these folks business. and you should tell everyone exactly who these RV camps are so we can all blacklist them. You want to see change, all we need is a blacklist of RV camps that are too aggressive with preventing self contained built Cargo Trailers, and they will change their tune fast.
Kevin J - these are free or low-cost campgrounds. And they have a good reason for not allowing them. They have had problems with people using the grounds as toilets. The first time I ran across this rule was at a mall parking lot. The mall allows RVs to park there overnight for free. But they have to be self-contained RVs. As it is free, I doubt they are going to become upset because they are blacklisted. Maybe they would change their rule if some people didn't think the world is their bathroom and don't even get me started on the trash problem. Some of the free campgrounds have been shut down because of trash, including used toilet paper. That is why I plan on picking up other people's trash and garbage when I start boondocking this summer.
DancesWithBears I have found that if you tell/show them that you have a chem toilet it solves the problem. Also, the parking for the night is usually free because they derive business from the campers lol. There's always a money angle lol. Hey by the way thanks for picking up the trash left by losers while you are boondocking. I do the same in fact I recently chose a spot to camp for 3-4 days just so I could clean up a huge mess someone made/left out in our forest. I ended up taking a full pickup load to the dump and even more than that to the recycling place.

I a new subscriber and ordered a ARE TW last week I have a 12 week waiting period. I will be living out of it in the next few years. I am used to living in small spaces as I was in the Navy and Then got into truck driving. I am currently taking care of my mom full time. I am ready to get back on the road full time. I hope too meet up with other nomads to run with.
That was my dream. I was thinking of doing this with the much longer cargo trailer. Customizing it is the key until you're happy

You've just inspired me, I've got a 6x12 just like this one and I'm dying to get my wife and kids out camping, I'm going to start the build!
I am leaning heavily this way. A partial shoulder replacement kind of forced me to continue researching before taking the plunge. Here are a couple questions I have, though:
1) Insurance. If it's insured as a cargo trailer, will your belongings contained within the trailer be covered?
2) I mostly plan to boondock, but there may be occasions when visiting family that there will be no free camping. How accepting would campgrounds and RV parks be of a cargo trailer? Sometimes I think if you add some of those awful mauve and blue graphics on the side of anything, an RV park will accept you.
Lori Smith I had a campground membership a few years ago and camped in a cargo trailer, there were no problems, other campgrounds welcomed us as well. I am hoping to redo the interior soon, before there was an inflatable mattress, refrigerator and some shelving. Hoping to install countertop, removable couch/bed storge and table to make it livable.
Hope you know your way around power tools, DC wiring, carpentry, pluming, and a tape measure.

U GOT IT, make it how U want, I use a 5 gallon bucket, 13 gallon trash bags, no Muss no Fuss, no plumbing, very easy to insulate, solar on the roof, GREAT VIDEO, thanks William

And the window, well that just makes this all the more appealing! I'm certainly seeing the logic here. I wintered in a 16' Panther one year, used no systems in the camper. I had a space heater and a hot plate. The lav was gutted, so I was either using the described solution or local facilities at a nearby gas station or restaurant. Roof leaked, and the door was a bit of a pain, natural being as old as it was. A bed and a counter in an insulated cargo trailer would have worked great, and would have far more room inside. I'd also mount a small a/c unit, and between that, the insulation, and stowable 'furniture', I could also put the trailer to work, hauling temperature sensitive light freight.

If the articles I have read are correct there is a possible very important 11th reason. I have read that many of the new trailers have toxic materials in them. Your blank slate approach gives you the opportunity to research before you choose materials. Just a thought. Thank you so much for your amazing, informative, down to earth, inspiring and fun videos!

Thanks Bob! It's interesting to see what rigs people change to over time. I have chemical sensitivities. I bought a used Airstream Basecamp thinking I could make it work. Unfortunately, any time there is any moisture I can taste and smell the adhesives (from the flooring and bathroom). It's awful. I wanted to push through and just use it, but have decided it's not worth sacrificing my health over. SO, going with a cargo trailer and will use low or non toxic ways to build it out! It's interesting. I'm looking at other options myself. My father lived in a camper and as you mentioned, everything that could have fallen apart did. What I have in mind is to completely rip the camper (wood, sheet metal, pipes, tanks, sink, fridge, and whatever) off of the frame (the camper is 24 feet long) and replace it with a truck box. I've seen truck boxes for sale that are over 20 feet long by 8 by 8 for the same $2500 and they'll deliver. Put in a couple of windows, a door, and no building permit required.
I have to disagree. I bought a Auto Mate 1982, 30'. Amazing rv, LOVE IT!! $2500.00, took 1yr. of searching, nailed it! No leaks, no rot, only thing I have purchased is a new battery. Don't give up searching. Mine was garaged on blocks for 2 years. Left Oregon's beaches and now am in Wasington.

I would worry about being inside , use your bolt lock... only to find out that some A- hole closed the outside hasp lock on ya , leaving you trapped inside. !! 🤔
That thought yes, but you put your lock on the hasp to prevent that
I took the outside lock of my back door. Only locks from the inside.
Cargo vans have one outstanding advantage, and that are the big doors that allow you to put in furniture of your choice such as orthopedic recliners instead of a bed which is probably uncomfortable as well as taking up all the space.
i have lots of trailers and a bus, i swear by my cargo trailer, all the points you made are correct, its awsome for stealth mode,
it definatly holds its value, and resale value. Tough and light,work or play. GOOD INVESTMENT :)

I think I'm in trouble, I own a used 96 coachmen catalina 33ft and I only use it seasonal at a campground everything works thankfully however I have never taken it out on the road since I don't have a vehicle to tow it. I am looking to sell it and get a rv class c. it is just my daughter 12yrs n I my husband passed away in 2012 accident at work. I do want to stop being a slave and do the rv life but I'm dealing with depression and fears. I want you to know that all the videos I've watched are so inspiring.

Depression can come in a variety of flavors. Sometimes it's a brain chemical problem out of balance and needs treatment that way. Other times, it's situational. In 1994, my divorce from my first husband ended a 9 year relationship. Before we broke up, I felt a lot of depression, but after, it melted down to a minor inconvenience. Dig deep for the courage to ask for help. Sounds like you got a lot of dreams and plans. That's a good sign. Life Coach Barbara Sher helped me get a lot of focus for my own life. She talks a lot about how to get what you REALLY want and how to go about figuring out what that is. Hope this helps.

I lived in a 24 x 8 ft cargo trailer for around 4 years. It was way to big and I sold it and now live in a 12x20 converted shed and it's fine. However I am think about going out west and live in my Chevy HHR before I get much older and my heart gives up on me, I just turned 65. Just found your channel today and already learned a lot and expect to learn more. Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge.

You made a lot of great points about using a cargo trailer. I have never considered using one before but now you got the wheels in my head turning. Right now I am using a 2007 chevy express cargo van just like yours and I could easily pull a cargo trailer behind me. I also have a 30' Keystone Sprinter travel trailer that has been collecting dust in storage for the past few years. I used to live in the 30 footer full time in a campground but I no longer do that and it's a lot of hassle to pull it to where I want to camp and set it up and tear it back down again so I just don't use it anymore. It took me months and a random suggestion from another video to find this! I am a minimalist and have lived out of my backpack before so I was wanting to convert a cargo trailer for some time but not many people think of it. This is exactly everything I have been wanting to do
All I really want in a small cargo trailer conversion is a bed frame bolted to the floor with a decent matress (preferrably a regular mattress and box spring), a desk (also bolted to the floor) and some outlets, along with an AC unit and a window. I mean it would be nice to add a small hand-pump shower and toilet but those would be extras.
Decades is no joke! I've had my cargo trailer for over 20 years and it's as strong as the day I towed it off the lot. And, It's paid for itself hundreds of times over in that time. Hands down one of the best things I've ever bought.

For me, it would be too small and basic. But I can see how the simplicity could be a draw, particularly when you take the price into account. My husband and I are planning to retire soon, and we'll be living in a small trailer (26' outside length, 21.5' inside) that we'll pull with a customized cargo van. This gives us more room, without being too long or heavy to comfortably pull on the road and will fit easily into most national parks. Being small, and without a lot of complicated bits to worry about, we shouldn't have to spend a lot of time and money on keeping it in good repair. While a cargo trailer is too small for us, a big bus or fifth wheel or class C wouldn't fit our needs either. What Bob has done for us was to show through his videos how to find what is best for each individual's needs, along with a lot of tips for making the RV you ultimately choose suit your needs perfectly.
All of Bob's videos have helped shape our decision process and will continue to do so as long as he keeps making his videos. We're hoping to meet him some day when we retire, and have the whole country for our backyard. Thank you Bob.

Put a lock on the hitch of the trailer. I have one on my hitch on my tow vehicle too.

Trailer on wheels is the Same as the car safer place to be in lightning storm is a car the hit will fry the computers but not passengers .and there's always a 1 in millions chance something would happen but that's life.this type no different than aluminum RV
I much prefer my cargo trailer to an RV for light use because it's also a cargo trailer. They are handy for hauling and temporary storage which RVs are not. I've worked on enough older RVs and camper trailers to dislike their design. I'd choose a cargo or horse trailer (a cargo trailer for livestock) over an RV any time.
BTW a great way to sleep comfortably in any trailer is a hammock. I sleep in one at home too and it's much better for my bad back. You only need two mount points for a hammock (I use camlock cargo straps for adjustment) and they easily store in a small space. Hammock forums are the way to go for learning hammock-fu.
If you ever need to seal your trailer, use 3M 5200 instead of common silicone. It's designed for through-hull joints on boats and is better in every way than conventional "caulks".
I bought last year an 18' long by about 7'+ wide cargo trailer that my Dad made . I bought it from his estate sale. I have it now full of over 50 years of my possessions. And I weighed it on the truck scales and it weighs over 4300 lbs. It was a little bit heavy for my truck suspension so I had some Airbags installed, and now it isn't a problem. And to avoid any problems with the transmission I had my transfer case and my transmission serviced and I had the shop install one of the best transmission coolers.I can pull in 3rd gear only to avoid clutch pack burnout. I've already done some driving with the trailer behind my truck and it pulls very well. I have a Leer canopy on the back of my truck and I have a bed set up ready built out back there.
I agree with you and that cargo trailers are better than travel trailers.
