Damn I forgot how hard episode 19 goes holy shit absolutely nuts! Also notice Toji lost his left arm and leg when Hikari visits him, he lived but that sucks.
At least he lived in this version. He didn't fare too well in the manga.

Discovering this watch through 9 months later, and the way not a thing gets past Josh is hella impressive. The rebuild version of Ep. 19 makes Rebuild 2 one of my favorite films of all time. I hope y’all react to those at some point. Also fun fact (since y’all finished the series already) the voice for the Eva’s monster screaming is Yui’s VA pitched down.
I love this and the rebuild versions. This is almost horror-esque, and I love the low shots through the trees and the fog. The rebuild version is just raw as hell.

Honestly I think he let slip that he has either seen the series, read about it online, or has been spoiled things cause he said that they said there was a soul needed for the evas which as far as I remember no one in the story has mentioned. They dont find that out until after Ritsuko explains rei if I am remembering right. Love his enthusiasm he clearly loves the series but honestly whenever any reactor gets almost everything right in their predictions including things that are very hard to parce out because of a lack of information I get real sus.
He even sort of seems to catch the slip and try to cover it with a "theory" idk seems kind of like they were like we love this series but how can we react if weve both seen it" and decided to have him act like he hadnt seen it. Love it either way tbh not even mad cause his reactions are so good. I could also be wrong and maybe they did mention a soul being necessary or maybe he just figured it out and or mishead something and thought that idk I hope he really hadnt seen it but if its acting props cause its good 😂

@@sifibruh7055go watch the og English, this one has basically dumber lines from her constantly, og makes it clear, magi are 3 fractal copies of her mom, the brains inside each are clone tissue "the dummy plugs" kinda like this but emotions , magi are computational. I kinda hate this new version, only seen it through reactions, prob seen og 100 times
Episode 19 is very close to being my favorite episode of the series, it’s between this one and episode 6. Also one of if not the best action pieces in the show, just seeing the vindictive joy in shinji’s face while dominating the angel is such a rare sight
One piece of trivia about “Man’s Battle”😊
There was a scene where the angels invaded the command center and Gendo didn't move as he was covered in the blood of EVA who fought against them, but that scene was a scene from the battle between Russia's Baltic Fleet and Imperial Japanese Navy Combined Fleet during the Russo-Japanese War. This may be based on the legend that during the Battle of the Sea of Japan, Marshal Heihachiro Togo, commanding from the open-air bridge, was hit with water spray from close range bullets, but remained motionless and his footprints remained dry.😌

Also a small visual detail at 4:52, look at Toji's leg.
28:35 some continuity error here considering Shinji was only wearing his school uniform instead of plug suit when he piloted Unit 1, so why is his plug suit floating inside?
Yes it was 'corrected' in the manga, the screen showing Shinji'e uniform floating

the plug suit is the embodiement of his soul, it was explained
The entire end discussion after episode 20 was so awesome and funny. Josh is using the Golden Ratio to unlock new stand powers with these theories 😂. Can't believe we're getting to the end already!

gosh how much I love these reactions, I remember just a few years back whenever I tried talking about this anime and start a conversation on behalf of Shinji, everyone gave him shit and sided with his father instead. It's incredible to see how much people now understand how trauma, manipulation and abuse work nowadays
its been like 20 years since i watched evangelion for the first time and i keep noticing thing.. and those sequences with Jinji man. what a trip they are

Back in the borrowing VHS’s from friends era. I had the borrowed the first 3 Tapes from a friend. Which stopped before the arrival of Asuka.
They didn’t have the entire middle portion of the series so the next Tape I got started at episode 20. And blew my fucking mind. This is still my favorite episode. To this day

Ngl, episode 19 is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. When I first watched the show, the moment when Unit-01 ran out of power was the biggest "Oh shit" moment I've ever experienced in any series or film.
Other shows from that time period which been influential in some way are : Cowboy bebop, Akira, Record of Lodos war, Ranma 1/2, Trigun and Tenchi Muyo.
Dunno if you guys ever watched one of those.

You guys are my favorite reaction channel for a show like this! You both seem to have, in my opinion, the empathy I feel is required to connect with so many complex characters and at the same time to know when some of them are doing something messed up, as well as the wherewithal to explore the complex plot below the surface, which can be difficult. I'm eagerly awaiting your reaction to episode 22, my personal favorite from the series other than the film "The End of Evangelion," which is absolutely necessary viewing.
I also have a suggestion for episode 22's viewing, if you haven't watched it yet: Instead of watching the Netflix dub for episode 22 (or, perhaps in addition to it), I would highly, highly suggest trying out the original ADV English dub with Tiffany Grant. Her voice acting doesn't always work for the series, in my opinion, but her acting in this particular episode is unmatched, bar none. It's seriously chilling, and really emotionally impactful. Hope you give it a shot, and thanks for all the wonderful commentary!!

fun fact, this angel's name zeruel means "arm of god" more specifically god's right arm.
Suzuhara's Eva was destroyed... and his plug was broken... but it wasn't completely crushed... we have seen there is quite a bit of space inside the plugs... so breaking it in half wouldn't be as dangerous as it seems considering the pilots are closer to the end side of the plug... still the fall, or the Eva crushing it further would have been really dangerous but in this particular case he was out for 3 days because of the psychological stress of the take over as well as his body feeling the pain of the fight while he was synchronized with the Eva... not actual physical harm, not that he didn't get banged up a bit...
Toji did lose his left leg in the trauma. His left arm also does not seem to be visible at all during the medium shot of him in his bed.
the way Josh talks reminds me so much of the way Chael Sonnen speaks, and it is amazing. Like he could be saying the most random things and I'd be so invested

I love this anime
I love how it's usually the guys who can really appreciate all the worldbuilding and lore around the (secret) technologies Eva's are built upon. The girls usually focus on the emotional/psychological parts. Really interesting. Edit: on my part, I don't believe running away is a bad thing. Shinji is a pussy and but he's not wrong. The people around him and with that, unfortunately in the real world too, are disgusting savages that would prefer to cower behind a child and then act all distant and cruel when confronted with it rather than admit they need Shinji and acknowledge his existence. People are really like this and you can witness this especially on the workfloor of almost every company.
