One of the most difficult cars in the the world to master. This man has done it. And on the most technical track in the world in my opinion. Very well done.. whew! I’m worn out and all I did was watch.
I used to own a 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa 1977 model . I bought it in Germany in 1986 with only 54 thousand kilometres on the clock and only one previous owner , and it was the most fun car i ever had and drove. I was 20 years old and 4 month shy of my 21rst birthday when i bought it . Most young people would have killed themselves in it . If you dont respect it it will bite you. im an old far now and drive a 3.5 Mercedes coupe. Nothing beats a 911 . Its driving it its purest form. It feels so alive . Pure joy. I miss it !

@@karimmaamar7782 With cash . Its was a well kept 2nd hand. Bought it in Bavaria , left hand drive and took it back to London. Only had 52 thousand kilometers on the clock and had one previous owner . I bought it with 500 Deutschmark bills in the mid 80s when cash was king and no questions were asked. You could not do that now. That Carrera 3.0 Targa was 32 grand but because it was paid for with cash , the guy took 2 K off and gave me a squeeze . Most enjoyable fun car i ever had. Now i am a 59 year old fart and drive a classic Mercedes coupe . I would look a bit silly now in a sports car with my paunch and slowly reseeding hairline . Growing old gracefully can be depressing as much as it might be a tripe boring .
342 km/h in 1988. Took Ferrari another 14 years to beat that.
No roll bars. No safety cage. 80’s recklessness. I love it. He might be smoking a cigarette and have a scotch in the drink holder too.

It's not a Porsche though so that's kind of a moot point. If there was someone who'd take a ferrari and added 50% power they would probably have matched or surpassed that top speed too. I mean imagine an F40 with 700 hp..
@@CAP416 Hah Hah my mates used to roll a joint on the glove box when i owned a Carrera targa in the mid eighties and we did not even wear seat belts.
He was sawing on that steering wheel like a toddler in his dad's lap sitting in a garage. ½ turn corrections at triple digits! Insane driving. CTR did have a back seat, its where this guy strapped in his ball-balls.
I stopped counting “oh shit” moments at 212 when I realized he was only 1/4 the way around the track.
Fun fact: The english-speaking narrator in this video is the voice of Chef in the german version of South Park.

Any car is dangerous, when you drive that close to the limits. The Ruf's limits were just a lot faster than anything else.
Stephan Roser is the driver (if my memory is 11% as impressive as this 33+ year old (original) video)...

I met the driver a couple of days ago at one of RUF's production buildings. Just an everyday guy, really cool.
He’s no everyday guy…he’ll, I bet he wears a cape at night! He’s what we call a “Wheelman”.
I lived/worked in Germany in 1996 and the RUF workshop/showroom was approx 50-70 meters from my guesthouse and this 'Yellow Perol' was on display in the showroom, which I'd walk past every day on my way to work. Didn't realise the significance of this car at the time. Shame on me 🙄

That has to be up there with the top 3 driving performances on the nürburgring in a streetcar, one other probably being Lars Kern's record in the GT2 RS MR. The skill feel and nuts that lap took will make Stefan Roser immortal to anyone who gives even the slightest shit about cars. Absolute masterpiece! The Yellowbird has the perfect proportions, coupled with the iconic RUF wheels and it's just the coolest car around. I remember Road & Track had an article sometime in the early 2000s where they assembled a bunch of cars for several performance tests. They included the Yellowbird amongst them. It still stood up well, despite the passing of time.
Unbelievable! Like God himself came down to take this amazing automobile for a spin around this incredible track!
not only is the driver a very talented fellow, you shouldn't forget that back in the day camera gear was really heavy, this was at least another 50-70kg in the rear seat, that's three people's weight including the driver. just to control the car with obviously contemporary tires is a real challenge.
More like weighed as much as a sack of potatoes with the same optical quality.

Great drivers won't get in a car that makes them feel unsafe. They won't risk it. This guy not only was having fun, he felt safe inside that crazy car.

I wouldn't even go flatout up the hill in Assetto Corsa in a more controllable car, not even in real life in a RUF CTR that is very twitchy. Only Stefan can do that.

Just like Ayrton Senna about a year later testing the Honda NSX, driving an extremely capable car at the limit, with penny loafers for driving shoes. WOW!
I think the NSX is a little tame compared to the Yellowbird
On center vagueness in the steering, long and unprecise shifter throw, rolling suspension, no adjustable steering wheel, non slideable sun visors, bad infotainment.

On center vagueness? Apparently the steering is just about flawless in this thing. Gearbox doesn't look sloppy at all. Don't need adjustable steering wheel, infotainment is blasphemy in such a car.
All the entertainment you'd need in a car such as this can be found stuffed in the trunk and near your hands and feet

The fact that this is done when the circuit is open to the public is extra nuts. I’d love to manually clean up and upscale from the best copy of this that’s around. It’s already so incredible to watch but upscaled well? It would be even better
I've had some history with ruf, not just with the two vhs videos that I own. But also my older brother sat in the yellow bird when he was a few months. Not to mention I have an uncle on the German side work at the ruf car company at one point. Ahhh good old memory's.

Awesome video, just searched it after Lois Ruf introducing Ruf CTR in Jay Leno's Garage. The obvious favorite part is, when cool driver power sliding in dangerous car around the clueless motorcyclists.
This car came out when I was in high school. I had no idea it was this unstable to drive. Like, when you’re flooring it down the straightaway and the steering wheel starts wobbling...
I remember another notable car for this era: the AMG Hammer.
The idea that he needs opposite-lock on the kauressel is just insane…and the drift around CZcams corner is quite epic. Bigger balls than me. By far.
the closing speeds on other traffic !.... real skill is lovely to see... beautiful car and really enjoyed that..
An indirect indication of the speed is that the steering wheel is constantly moving for the entire lap, even on the ‘straight’ sections. No stability control, traction control or ABS. No helmet, fire suit or gloves, either.
It wasn’t that long ago but it still seems otherworldly👍👍👍

@German Retro Guy yea that is a monster engine. Since I’m from the states we got robbed of having Toyota diesels. The US thinks diesels are not good unless they are in full size trucks. It’s a shame. Diesels should be in way more small vehicles here.
