Great old school diagnosis and fix ! I believe however, _this_ is why Mustie1 was seen in the prior video, spending time on the yellow pedal car. That was a possible backup if the Tundra repair didn't work out !
Thanks Mustie1, its nice to see someone repair something instead of just replacing it. It not only saves money but waste. The land fills and e-waste sites are full. The town dump where I live is almost full and they are going to have to start sending waste out by rail car. It is going to cost a fortune to get rid of trash now. Builders can't even build houses in my area because the dump refuses to take construction debris.
Kind of funny, in Feb 2019 I was laying in the hospital watching your video after losing a kidney, it was car-related, not sure which one. So today I am laying in the same hospital after having had a heart attack Tuesday, and have to have a quadruple bypass tomorrow. So hopefully I'll be around to watch next week's video, lol another great video that helped pass the boredom of being in a hospital. I have to make it so I can see how the Econoline turns out! LOL seriously I love that thing.
I love how you show all the screws screwing in and out, all the nuts and bolts being removed. Its so informative and demonstrates wonderful editorial choices. Keep your head down, dont look at the people around you, thats the best way to live life!
As a novice I find that to be the most valuable parts of the videos, because I can see someone as experienced as Darren struggle and show the solution. I would have probably given up or done something stupid to get it open (like Dremel a slit into the head of the screw).
Most people don't get why people like myself and you work on our own things. Right here is the best example of why you work on your own stuff.. no better feeling to be able to fix something and it did not cost you a single dollar to do to work. There's no place that if you would have taking it too that would have tear that motor down clean everything and put it back together again. Any place that charges you for working on things are just going to throw a new part at it. Excellent job I'm glad to see everything worked out.

@@kevin9c1 I live on the gulf coast and I will just say that sometimes our tropical storms are worst than hurricanes. It all depends on how fast the storm is moving. A slow moving tropical storm can cause more damage that a fast moving hurricane.

It's good that you knew about the "solenoid" affect when reassembling the motor, Darren. You've obviously been down that road before in some other motor. Glad you could get it fixed.
Manual locking hubs, and manual shift transfer case, never had any issues with any of my vehicles 4WD systems, but manual is the best and easiest to diagnose LOL, and usually the cheapest to fix too. I had a hub on my Bronco 2 making noise a few years ago so I quit driving it and ordered new locking hubs...problem solved within minutes. Easier to fix problems before they become bigger problems and more expensive ones at that LOL.
@@wildbill23c While I agree manual is by far the better option for all those reasons, I have to admit, the older I get the more I like not having to get out and lock the hubs when it's -10° F, the wind is howling, and we got two feet of snow on the ground and counting, just so I can make it up my driveway.

Nothing wrong with manual stuff at all, far less shit to break...but I love the people who show up at my shop in their $80k+ SUV's Trucks, Cars, whining because that shit don't work, and then whine more when they get the repair bill to fix all that stuff. I've never had to replace any manual crank windows or manual locks...but power window switches, motors, regulators, all the time. Same for power door locks, although not nearly as often, but too often to be anything that I'd want or need in a car.

Most likely either the front axle disconnect, or the transfer case motor, both will cause the same blinking lights and no engagement issue...front differential is active all the time, the front axle disconnect only disconnects the passenger side axle from the drive train, 100% pointless design, may as well have the HD Dodge axles with no disconnect they're live all the time, and your fuel economy isn't really going to be noticeably different LOL. Only Toyota over-engineers and over-complicates simple things....ok well just about every other automaker does this same cheap electronic actuator crap.
I found myself shouting words of encouragement and at times cursing as you were trying to push the motor brush back inside its housing. Getting the car stuck at the end was hilarious. Been there myself!
My Tundra did that 3 years ago. I couldn't mess with it and I replaced the part. You saved yourself $248. If my frame gets any worse, I'll hire you for the repairs.🙂 Nice work on the troubleshooting and repair, as usual. 👍
My family had the same thing that happened at the end clip happen when we were moving in. We had a big long moving truck and my dads trailer on the end and we didn't realize that it would hit so my dad gunned it to get up our steep driveway and it took some nice neighbors with a bunch of floor jacks to get it free. It's a great way to meet your neighbors. Also your videos have taught me how to work on equipment and motors, so far I've fixed at least 10 small engines. So Thank You for spending time to make these videos they are great.
Many of today's 4x4's are setup pretty much the same way, some just don't have the front axle disconnect, and even that isn't anything new, Jeep tried that in the 80's on the Cherokee, turned out to be a pile of crap and there wasn't any savings to fuel economy, just a lot of pissed off people when the 4WD didn't work...that setup was vacuum operated, the vacuum lines would deteriorate and well the system wouldn't lock the front axle in. They got away from that pretty quick and went to a live axle, no disconnects, it was spinning all the time regardless if you were in 4WD or not, far less problems that way and made for a seemless shift on the fly 4WD engagement too.
To keep it moving free and lubed they have always told me use it a few times a year. It also could have been a grease failure after water contamination.
Another excellent video. Probably the most important thing you demonstrated was at the end showing pushing both wheels in the same direction to confirm that the four wheel drive was locked in. Great work as usual.
I love watching mustys videos, when I take on a project like this I end up breaking parts, fixing them, losing screws and having to find new ones installing it backwards, removing other parts to get it turned around, finally getting it back in at 1am only to find it was a blown fuse.

Eric is a professional. He quickly finds the problem, makes quality repairs, with good parts, then moves on to the next job. I wish his shop was closer to me!
Good for you to be able to fix this. I did basic maintainance and some repair work because early on, I didn't have money to bring my car to a shop. I didnt have a 4x4 either.. The lift made this repair so much easier. I wouldn't want to remove the front diff actuator lying on the ground. I'm impressed that the frame repairs still look new. I've seen the video when you repaired the frame.

Glad to see that you got the actuator figured out. I had a white 2005 4X4 Tundra similar to yours and it was one of the best trucks I ever owned. That machine was like a mountain goat and would climb anything! Now have a 2008 CM 4X4 that I bought new. I work from home so it only has 24,000 miles on the clock and hopefully I'll get a lot of years out of it.

Good on you for fixing the malfunctioning part. Toyota dealer would have said it was $300 for the part and $500 for labour. I am like you. Fix the defective part if you can before throwing new parts at it. Just wish I had a lift like you. Funny at the end there. I was yelling at you that you would get hung up on the hitch but you just kept on pushing it. Well live and learn. You always get yourself out of these jams.
I am so grateful for this video thank you Mustie1! Just finally got around to doing this on my 04 DC Tundra and sure enough after following all these steps, I plugged it back in and the actuator is moving and I have no more blinking on the dash. There's I guess two actuators that go off because I always heard one - but now I can clearly hear the ring gear on this actuator spinning around. Just a note, I am still glad I took mine out and apart because I noticed the o-ring failed on mine, although I didn't have nearly the corrosion on my worm gear as you did. I think because the previous owner let his valve covers go bad for so long, there was oil on everything below and it seemed to have seeped into the electrical socket. I took it off and apart because I wanted to see if the oil penetrated the o-ring as well. Epic. Thanks again.
A typical Mustie style repair. No trips to the parts store and fix it with what you’ve got. 90% of us would have just said junk and ordered the whole part. Thanks for the infotainment.
When I look at this great video, our buddy Mustie dismantled, cleaned the rust of the worm gear and reassembled. I believe the rust was not the issue (small amount of a metal cog that engages with plastic). If I had to bet, I think the issue was carbon build up on the armature of the motor being stationary for so long. This happens and when current applied the brushes could not effectively conduct it to the rotor. Moving the armature a touch and cleaning the rotor (or stator - never can get them the right way around) was probably the fix. Would have been worth applying 12v to those brushes with the motor in place just to see if it moved. My 2c as an armchair diagnostician. Love the great work Mustie, learn sooo much from you.
I would like to take this opportunity to clear something up. In some of your videos you make a statement along the lines of “I’m not sure you’ll be interested in this…”. WE ARE!…lol. You’re the MacGyver of CZcams. We see you drag stuff in and many of us think, “there’s no way”. Then you do the “you know what that means…”. We love it.
I feel like I predicted this whole video . First I called the solenoid problem.. then I said I'll bet water got in there.. And finally I said he's not going to be happy until this truck gets stuck!! Good video ☺️
That "look" on yer face Mustie when ya seen the front differentials were locked in? (like the cat that swallowed the canary?) Absolutely PRICELESS! There are many many folks out there that don't realize just how delicate the surgery is, and how much concentrative focus is required when operating on commutator brushes. And even FEWER that can perform that surgery successfully! I know I was holding my breath when ya were trying to get that brush into its proper place and configuration. SOMETIMES, however, there are "certain little magicals" involved, like making sure yer holding yer tongue in the right position, that ARE "camera shy!" KUDO'S to you Man!
Most people would have bought a new one or got one from a donor out of the salvage yard, but not Mustie1. My dad was like Mustie1. He worked on VWs and was a pretty good mechanic. He took things apart that most replaced and would usually attempt to repair them before replacement. For one thing, back in the seventies, a lot of parts were not available over the counter, another was he didn't like to spend money. He did fix many parts, but some were beyond repair.
Watching you try and put the magnet back in the motor was like watching somebody play the operation game. I fully expected a buzzer to go off at any moment! 🤣
All it needed was a little bit of love. It's always a good day when you don't have to throw money at a new part. good save Daren. Good save. Saw that coming Hahahahaha. Its always the hitch that hangs use up! At least I gotta good laugh darren..
I did the same thing this last winter climbing a hill around a downed tree . It is amazing how much weight a hitch can hold. As always - great video - thanks for putting the work into them!
You certainly have the knack for taking things apart to see how they work, fix them and put them back to work. I had the knack of taking things apart and not being able to put them back together so they become pieces to the junk pile. Thanks for your videos. Good work! Thanks for leaving the last part in, just the sort of thing I would do. Those brushes we tricky, when I do jobs like that I try to imagine how the hell they put them together in the factory. Has it really been 4 years?
In the factory they probably have a shim that just fits into those brush housing grooves. Some kind of a semicircular springy thing. Could just be a piece of spring wire bent just right. Although what Darren did wiring it up is a valid technique too. For a one off it's a good way to go.
You can also hold the brushes back with loops of thread/string/etc if more of the motor housing has to be in place before the brushes can be released. That way you can cut the loop to release the brush and pull the other end out.
The last part showing you digging yourself stuck on that hitch was hilarious. Nice repair, another "broken" part saved!

He didn't hear me yelling to lift the back blade on the DT175, either. Pulling up might have helped dig that stinger out of the ground.

Either those screws were really loose or mustie has insane strength not stripping those without a hammer impact driver

My family had the same thing that happened at the end clip happen when we were moving in. We had a big long moving truck and my dads trailer on the end and we didn't realize that it would hit so my dad gunned it to get up our steep driveway and it took some nice neighbors with a bunch of floor jacks to get it free. It's a great way to meet your neighbors. Also your videos have taught me how to work on equipment and motors, so far I've fixed at least 10 small engines. So Thank You for spending time to make these videos they are great.
That lift sure has come in handy, more than paid for itself by now I would imagine.
That lift is key. Most average Joes have to wiggle on their backs or crawl on their bellies. Too old for that.

Many of today's 4x4's are setup pretty much the same way, some just don't have the front axle disconnect, and even that isn't anything new, Jeep tried that in the 80's on the Cherokee, turned out to be a pile of crap and there wasn't any savings to fuel economy, just a lot of pissed off people when the 4WD didn't work...that setup was vacuum operated, the vacuum lines would deteriorate and well the system wouldn't lock the front axle in. They got away from that pretty quick and went to a live axle, no disconnects, it was spinning all the time regardless if you were in 4WD or not, far less problems that way and made for a seemless shift on the fly 4WD engagement too.
To keep it moving free and lubed they have always told me use it a few times a year. It also could have been a grease failure after water contamination.
Yep, that's part of why the manual tells you to engage the 4WD every few months keeps things moving like they're supposed to.

Another excellent video. Probably the most important thing you demonstrated was at the end showing pushing both wheels in the same direction to confirm that the four wheel drive was locked in. Great work as usual.
I love watching mustys videos, when I take on a project like this I end up breaking parts, fixing them, losing screws and having to find new ones installing it backwards, removing other parts to get it turned around, finally getting it back in at 1am only to find it was a blown fuse.

The lift made this repair so much easier. I wouldn't want to remove the front diff actuator lying on the ground. I'm impressed that the frame repairs still look new. I've seen the video when you repaired the frame.

Glad to see that you got the actuator figured out. I had a white 2005 4X4 Tundra similar to yours and it was one of the best trucks I ever owned. That machine was like a mountain goat and would climb anything!
Now have a 2008 CM 4X4 that I bought new. I work from home so it only has 24,000 miles on the clock and hopefully I'll get a lot of years out of it.

Good on you for fixing the malfunctioning part. Toyota dealer would have said it was $300 for the part and $500 for labour. I am like you. Fix the defective part if you can before throwing new parts at it. Just wish I had a lift like you. Funny at the end there. I was yelling at you that you would get hung up on the hitch but you just kept on pushing it. Well live and learn. You always get yourself out of these jams.

Just finally got around to doing this on my 04 DC Tundra and sure enough after following all these steps, I plugged it back in and the actuator is moving and I have no more blinking on the dash. There's I guess two actuators that go off because I always heard one - but now I can clearly hear the ring gear on this actuator spinning around.
Just a note, I am still glad I took mine out and apart because I noticed the o-ring failed on mine, although I didn't have nearly the corrosion on my worm gear as you did. I think because the previous owner let his valve covers go bad for so long, there was oil on everything below and it seemed to have seeped into the electrical socket. I took it off and apart because I wanted to see if the oil penetrated the o-ring as well.

When I look at this great video, our buddy Mustie dismantled, cleaned the rust of the worm gear and reassembled. I believe the rust was not the issue (small amount of a metal cog that engages with plastic). If I had to bet, I think the issue was carbon build up on the armature of the motor being stationary for so long. This happens and when current applied the brushes could not effectively conduct it to the rotor. Moving the armature a touch and cleaning the rotor (or stator - never can get them the right way around) was probably the fix. Would have been worth applying 12v to those brushes with the motor in place just to see if it moved. My 2c as an armchair diagnostician. Love the great work Mustie, learn sooo much from you.

That "look" on yer face Mustie when ya seen the front differentials were locked in? (like the cat that swallowed the canary?) Absolutely PRICELESS! There are many many folks out there that don't realize just how delicate the surgery is, and how much concentrative focus is required when operating on commutator brushes. And even FEWER that can perform that surgery successfully! I know I was holding my breath when ya were trying to get that brush into its proper place and configuration. SOMETIMES, however, there are "certain little magicals" involved, like making sure yer holding yer tongue in the right position, that ARE "camera shy!" KUDO'S to you Man!

Most people would have bought a new one or got one from a donor out of the salvage yard, but not Mustie1. My dad was like Mustie1. He worked on VWs and was a pretty good mechanic. He took things apart that most replaced and would usually attempt to repair them before replacement. For one thing, back in the seventies, a lot of parts were not available over the counter, another was he didn't like to spend money. He did fix many parts, but some were beyond repair.
Watching you try and put the magnet back in the motor was like watching somebody play the operation game. I fully expected a buzzer to go off at any moment! 🤣
All it needed was a little bit of love. It's always a good day when you don't have to throw money at a new part. good save Daren. Good save. Saw that coming Hahahahaha. Its always the hitch that hangs use up! At least I gotta good laugh darren..

10 seconds in I think I see one of those old-school cassette adapter heads with the wire feed. Respect! I haven't seen one of those in use for years.

Thanks for leaving the last part in, just the sort of thing I would do. Those brushes we tricky, when I do jobs like that I try to imagine how the hell they put them together in the factory. Has it really been 4 years?
In the factory they probably have a shim that just fits into those brush housing grooves. Some kind of a semicircular springy thing. Could just be a piece of spring wire bent just right. Although what Darren did wiring it up is a valid technique too. For a one off it's a good way to go.
You can also hold the brushes back with loops of thread/string/etc if more of the motor housing has to be in place before the brushes can be released. That way you can cut the loop to release the brush and pull the other end out.
@@matthewsmith8573 losing a piece of string in a motor wouldn't be as catastrophic as a piece of wire would be too.
