My favorite kind of history is what I call "connect-the-dots history," and it usually shows up in books like "The Devil in the White City," by Erik Larson, "Liberty's Torch," by Elizabeth Mitchell, and the magnificent "Destiny of the Republic," by Candice Millard.
In the context of Musicology, I know of no one who does this kind of thing better than Dr. Greenberg...
In fact, I don't know of any other Musicologist who does this, at all.

Just a friendly remark: Ligeti's name is pronounced like George, but with an e instead of an o. I don't really know how to write it down phonetically, but hope it helps :)

It's pronounced neither like an e nor an o, but precisely like an o with an umlaut over it.
