It would make sense for a multi-billionare to have multiple properties in case he needs to stay at a certain state or country for a while due to his businesses but their is no need for a mansion size of the residential area I live in.

The obvious solution to the population problem is to limit the number of children people can have. To make a child you need two people if everyone has only one child the population of earth will be halved.
How do you make people have fewer children?

Bill Gates can't make a law or force people to have fewer children, but what he can do is work on saving the lives of the children that are alive, so that parents have fewer children because they KNOW that their children will live and not die.
That's it, in simple words that's what bill gates meant when he said he wants to cull the population. He wants people to have less children but doesn't want to force anyone, he wants people to out of their own free will have fewer children. That's why he is heavily invested in vaccines, WHO, etc so that in time people realise that more kids are more mouths to feed, and their children won't die of disease or virus.
Also, Bill Gates isn't the only one working on a vaccine for coronavirus. Russia, Germany, U.K., every country has companies working on a vaccine and the chance is that Bill Gates wont be the one who ends up creating a vaccine.
When a vaccine is created, he will most likely provide "donations" so that people who can't afford the vaccine can get it. That's it.. he isn't trying to kill you.
oh, and last time I checked Bill Gates doesn't have a status and doesn't show off his wealth. He is probably one of the few rich people that prefer privacy over fame.
