  • Car & Classic's Chris Pollitt and Jonny Smith are back down at the farm, this time to dig out a long derelict Mk2 Ford Transit. Can they dig it out? And will it run after years of sinking into the brambles? And is there a VW Camper hidden in the bushes? Watch and find out.

At Fitzwaryn School in Wantage, Oxfordshire, we had an X-reg (2001) 15-seat Ford Transit minibus (I left school on Friday 17th July 2009 when I was 16). Had it from brand-new. It never once broke down (or at least we never had to get out the bus because it broke down). It was still going by December nearly a year ago I was told - it gets serviced regularly. I bet it lasts for at least 5 more years!

A long time back I was told that some students I knew had part-time jobs trying to put some miles on the development versions of the Transit engines. They were put into Thames vans with the idea of doing a certain distance each shift. However, many miles were driven at night and the mileage was allegedly clocked up on motorways in rather less than the full shift time, leaving the driver time to catch up on sleep but still get their miles done. Apparently, those Thames van were noticeably faster than normal.

Theres actually a lot more chassis cabs like that than vans left now.
I used to have an ex German Fire Brigade mk2 about 4yrs ago now. It was mint, never welded with 18k miles on from new. Only sold it as storing it was a nightmare.
The other Transit was a mk4, and they are starting to become desirable.

Just did a quick check on the Gov.UK vehicle check website to see when it was last taxed, but it came back as on a SORN, so not able to tell from that, but the date of the last V5 transfer of ownership is listed as 1st Feb 2012, so probably that was when it was last driven, but no MOT details are on the system either, so as the MOT tests have been computerised since 2005, then its likely this van has not passed an MOT since at least 2004, or it would be listed on the system. The system also says that the reg WPR526X should be a 2 litre petrol engined white FORD, so it must have had an engine swap at some time or other and the DVLA not notified that it is now a 2.5 diesel, which it clearly is.
