I was just about to comment this to correct Hayley about the source when she said it was 'bluebeard'. 🙂
He has also written the script for this movie.
Suzanna killed her father. He was a horrible father to her. She remained angry bcoz of him thats why she killed the dog bcoz she was an angry child. She killed the dog not bcoz she was angry at the dog but she killed him bcoz she was angry at her father and she couldn't do anything about it so she took out her frustration on the dog. But eventually she became angry enough to kill her father.
Clue:
1. Watch the beginning when her father dies she is not mourning but sort of looks traumatized.
2. In the scene when he visits the abandoned house she keeps the photograph of her father among the things of her dead husbands.
Who told you that... the film doesn't show or depict her relationship with her father in any way whatsoever. She looks sad and devastated on her father's funeral. So the conclusions that u are drawing are very subjective and not at all clear. So this is either the flaw in the direction or writing. Having father's picture with all her late husbands' pictures doesn't imply that she killed her father too... may be she has displayed together the pictures of all the men in her life who are dead, irrespective of who is responsible for their deaths. So these are weak arguments. Her confession in the end of 7 sins could also include Maggie auntie's death for which may be she held herself responsible or in a fit of a moment, her trying to wrongly touch a young boy who she always considered as her son, could also be one of the sins she confessed apart from deaths of her 6 husbands.
The movie is based on the book Suzanne's seven husband by Ruskin Bond. The writer even made an appearance he is the old man at the bar, you guys thought as one of her husbands
It's a story of real lady. Lived in Hoogly, West Bengal.. Ruskin Bond wrote the story on her.
I have noticed honestly without even knowing about his book😂....because I had read a story of Ruskin Bond and that was also seemed peculiar to me, but I ignored it because obviously it was unexpected.
Short story to be precise. Not really a book.
This movie was way ahead of its time. Had it been released now it'd have had the respect and response it deserves.
I wonder if she was portrayed as Hindu what would public reaction be . I don't think it would have easy release considering the religious themes
@@babluprasad813 yeah but back then it wasn't such islamophobic or pro hindu agenda like today. Press had freedom and meant something. Probably there's a reason it isnt hindu centric. Today this movie would be boycotted if they had a hindu angle in it. Art is art why put religion or caste in the middle

By the way when Susannah says to Vronsky, “I must be Anna”, it’s a reference to the Russian novel ‘Anna Karenina’ - the title character has an affair with a character named Alexei Vronsky. And they solidify the reference when she’s reading it afterwards !

After the director made The Blue Umbrella based on a novel, the author Ruskin Bond shared his book of short stories. One of the short stories - Susanna's 7 Husbands caught the director's interest. That is the point where the director felt the short story reminded him of Bluebeard's 7 wives & he asked Bond to expand the story into a novella to flesh out the characters. Ruskin Bond played the priest in the film.
When she said Anna, she was referencing Anna Karenina by Tolstoy.

Did u notice, she confessed 7 sins in the end... though she had killed only 6 people... so its open ended... why did she ask for pardon for 7 sins ... either one sin was death of Maggie auntie... who died saving her... and she blamed herself for Maggie auntie's death..... or it could also be her acknowledgement of her desire for the young boy... whom she otherwise always treated as her own son... but one night she tried to touch him wrongly... so may be she acknowledged it as a sin... that's why she asks for 7 sins to be pardoned..!!! They have left it for the audiences to decide...!!!

The husbands represented seven sins in Christianity.. First Husband- Pride, Second- Gluttony, Third-Wrath,Fourth- Greed, Fifth- Lust and Six- Envy.. ..the only left sin was Sloth..but i could not figure out how did that get killed...

that is a great analogy of the movie, that i missed out completely, i guess, the Sloth sin, being lazy can be perceived as quitting, which was her trying to give up on her life by attempting to unalive herself.

This is one my favourite Priyanka Chopra films...first of all its written by my favorite author since childhood Ruskin bond and Priyanka's one of the finest performance

Naseer (17:16) is actually the father of the guy who played 'Arun Kumar' (Vivaan Shah) in real life.
And the woman who died in the fire at the end, is Usha Uthup. A very well known singer (especially for her big bindi). She also sang the chorus of the song "Darling" in this movie.
I liked this movie a lot. It was very different. But it was a flop. I think it is one of those movies , that become cult later on.
I didn’t realise that Ruskin Bond had a cameo in this movie. I grew up reading his stories. He is one of my favourite childhood author.

Interesting Fun Fact to share about this movie: Each of the husbands that Susanna marries are actually a physical embodiment and symbolic representation of “The Seven Deadly Sins”. Like each husband at first are good and romantic, but then they started presenting their “flaws” hurting Susanna and prompting her to kill them, before she finds actual true love in the end (aka her marrying Jesus and becoming a nun). It’s almost like the biblical story “The Book of Job”, but with a woman going through the wrong ordeals in life with love and marriage type, even if it involves killing and murder, hence the title, which means “Seven murders forgiven/pardoned”. Ruskin Bond (the priest who helps Susanna become a nun) aka the author was able to create this amazing short story using that story as inspiration, so hats off to him for it 👍🏻🫡😍
Susanne seven husband is relatively a short story and doesnt contain details about her husband. It has only few paragraphs as far i remember.
Vivian Shah (Arun) is the son of the legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah (Dr. Tarafdar). This is the only movie where they worked together.

Nein Nitin Mukesh & John Abraham were stars at the time, and did quite a few movies as leads. Irrfan Khan, Annu Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah are highly respected hindi film actors. Infact, Mohanlal was initially supposed to play the role of 5th husband but he dropped out due to date issues, and it was eventually played by annu kapoor.

The director Vishal Bharadwaj is an amazing director he has adapted three plays of Shakespeare in movies Maqbool is based on Macbeth, Omkara is based on Othello and Haider is based on Hamlet, all three movies are amazing

A response to Hayley... The ending is not about why Susanna got away with 6 murders. It is about a beautiful, strong and financially well off woman needs a husband who is is not insecure, not immature, not a misogynist, not a cheater, not weak, and not greedy! This is why her 7th husband Jesus Christ is an allegory for perfect love.

It is based on a true incident from 2006. The film follows a group of friends from a small town called Manjummel near Kochi, who decide to have a vacation in Kodaikanal, which is affected when one of them becomes trapped in the Guna Caves.
