  • Are we witnessing the death of democracy in Hong Kong?
For some, the recent conviction of 14 activists using new national security laws represented the final nail in the coffin.
Among them, two British judges who just quit their roles from Hong Kong's top appeals court.
One of them is the former Supreme Court Judge, Lord Sumption.
He's suggested that China's increasing influence has profoundly compromised the rule of law.
It's something Beijing rejects. They’ve accused Britain of weaponising its judicial influence over China.
But speaking to Yalda Hakim on The World, Lord Sumption denied playing politics.

The irony, the One Country, Two Systems was a nice opportunity for the RESOURCE-POOR BRITISH RULE Hong Kong to not sign the UN Convention, with established laws against colonialism and resource-exploitation. Meanwhile the RESOURCE-POOR Hong Kong was built by British Rule as a free market capitalist model with an exceptional smuggling port providing the world blood diamonds and conflict minerals, powering the DULL CURRENCY HK dollar tied to the RESOURCE-POOR British sterling then tied to the RESOURCE-POOR United States dollar since 1983 on the continued resource-exploitation which sacrificed African and Indian nations. Yes.
A journalist challenged Margaret Thatcher, stating that her agreement with China ceded control of the Hong Kong people to a communist dictatorship regime. The journalist questioned the morality of the decision and whether national interest superseded ethical concerns. Thatcher responded by asserting that the agreement benefited Hong Kong and dismissed the journalist's concerns as possibly isolated incidents. Bear in mind that the CCP had never ruled Hong Kong, and there was no referendum or any other measure to showcase the willingness of the general public in Hong Kong. What is actually obscene.

CCP threatened British government if they won't handover Hong Kong, they will send the army to take over by force. During negotiation, British proposed to remain governing power in Hong Kong, but CCP refused, despite 80% of Hongkonger want to remain in Great Britain. That's why CCP created one country two systems to deceive the world. At least I succeeded for some time, not for long.

During 100 years, British never gave democracy to Hong Kong people, but Beijing did after 1997. It was an experimental move, that if succeeded could have been extended to mainland China. But British and Americans interfered by funding anti-China political parties in Hong-Kong and up to now, the experience seems to be rather unsuccessful from Beijing point of view with the 2019 riots.

China broke verbal committments given concerning the treatment of the population in Hong Kong who in 100 years and 3 to 5 generations had become more british in their language, thinking, attitudes etc. The UK in 1997 could not force China to agree to anything new, as the 100 year old agreement stipulated the simple condition that it as to be leased then returned, without references to the people's welfare. The UK did not want mass immigration from the colony and so got assurances that the people would be allowed to go on as usual and be assimiliated wih China after 2047. But China started interfering quickly after handover, and people became agitated and protested then progressed to rioting. This suited China which moved in in force and showed it's strength with a brutal crankdown, arrests and long jail terms for renowned leaders. So now China has forced the Hong Kong administration to cancel the passports of named dissidents who escaped to the UK. So yes Democracy is much reduced, almost non existent.
