Alor Setar was established on 31 December 1735 by Kedah's 19th Ruler, Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II. In 1883, James F. Agustin, an Englishmen arrived in Kuala Sungai Kedah (now known as Kuala Kedah) about 10 km from the capital. The visit by Agustin spurred a growth for a more active and direct trade relations.
The city attracted various cosmopolitan trading activities from the British, Indian, Chinese together with other local and regional merchants. Following the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 , the transfer of power from the Siamese to British administration was held at Balai Besar.
The change of status of Alor Setar throughout the 20th century was also closely parallel by the rise of its urban development, demographic and population growth.
The council was upgraded to Kota Setar Municipal Council in 1978. Alor Setar was proclaimed the 9th city of Malaysia - on 21 December 2003.

I lived in Alor Setar 1968-1971 as a US Peace Corps Volunteer working with Pusat TB Negara. The best 3 years of my life! The scenery, history, people and food are all top notch! Alor Setar as well as Malaysia in general, live on in my heart and I will always consider it my second home. Great video!

@@Mustafa-Kamal-Satar I remember that area before the complex was constructed . I used to buy my daily news paper from Arunasalam news stand across the street from the bus terminal.....ate many meals along Jalan Langgar....and on occasion would treat myself to ice cream at the Milk Bar next to the Bus Terminal...the best 3 years of my life! I rented a small house across the street from the old British Club and Govt. Rest House.

I grew up here. Schooled here at elementary & secondary levels, before moving on to greater and greener educational pastures. My old house that I grew up in was one of the shanty shophouses (gerai makanan) in a row of shanty shophouses in Jalan Tunku Ibrahim in front of what is now the modern Pekan Rabu complex, of course in my childhood days Pekan Rabu wasn't like what it is today. My family later permanently relocated to our current home site in Mergong, but I could still see Menara Alor Setar (Alor Setar Tower) from the windows of my late mom's house in Mergong. I now reside, work & raise a family in Seri Kembangan, Selangor but make a point to frequently visit my and my mom's homecity Alor Setar where I still have many relatives

There's also a great Thai|Chinese resto next to the mosque. The chef is a Thai aunty. Not cheap, but very good stuff.
