To answer your question about the HF live performances, they use a loop station when necessary and will also sometimes simplify the arrangement a little.

In this last series of concerts HF has been using a looper controlled by Adam. He originally looped his voice to increase the complexity of the drum kit, but they could easily pre-record individual voices or harmony groups for the background that he triggers at the right points. Don't know if that's happening here, just saying it could allow extra voices to be laid into the mix.

    Hey Peter, great analysis!
As an aviation nerd and former sailplane pilot the video was very cool, too. I really enjoyed seeing the Staggerwing in the video, it is such a beautiful plane. And I like taildragger Cessnas more than the nosewheel configuration. They totally had me with the video alone. And the song was great, too.
Too bad my eyes went too bad to be able to continue flying..
When I saw the tumbnail I was thinking Top Gun, too. We watched that movie at least once a year on our small airfield. And I havn't seen the new one either.
For some music that is enjoyable to listen to and has potential to do deep dives on the arrangement I suggest you consider some Ayreon. It is a Prog-Rock/Metal project of dutch producer/composer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He does concept albums where every album tells a story in the bigger Ayreon Universe. He has a lot of great vocalists and combines a lot of genres in his music. It is basically Rock-Opera or Musical Theater, where every vocalist has one character in the story.
A usual song to look at is "The Day That The World Breaks Down" from the 2017 album The Source (czcams.com/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/video.html). It is the first song of the album and features all 11 singers and introduces their characters. The video has pop-up comments from Arjen giving background infos on the production and story. It would be really interesting to see your analysis and/or reaction to it.

Missed this one when you released it Peter, the holidays this year were even more nuts than usual. I’m sure the other commenters have filled you in with all of the info about it! As far as multitracking, yes, they do use it, and in concert, they will use a loop station on stage where needed on more complex arrangements. They don’t try to hide that at all, they actually have a whole bit, usually before Try Anything, where they explain it all to the audience, it’s very cool. If you have the opportunity I’d strongly recommend seeing them life, it’s quite an experience!

Yes, they usually do multitracking with Tim doing the bass for their recorded songs. Live versions are arranged a little differently with Adam doing more bass & sometimes they will use a looper station live for any constant repetitive sounds, like do do do's or the drum beat so Adam can do a harmonica solo, etc. For an example Man of Constant Sorrow they used a looper live for the ambient sounds. They debated for a long time about using a looper station but Adam won the debate. They haven't called themselves an a cappella band for many years, probably because of this. They call themselves an "all vocal band". Hope this helped. Thanks for the video!

they double layer tim a whole lot, like on this song. flowers on the wall, castle on the hill, love train, can't stop the feeling, american pie, folsom prison blues, ain't goin down, what's left of my heart, and possibly down to the honkytonk i believe are all double layered during the portions where tim sings lead in studio, and those are just the ones i can think of off the top of my head. he has this like. idk how to describe it but his vocal cords catch the air in such a way that gives them a kind of rattly overtone pattern that adam chance doesnt have because his style is a lot breathier and relaxed and sometimes its easy to tell when they don't switch off (which they seem to not switch off in the studio more than they do actually, i would wager because it'd be easier to just record one of them singing the bass loops and breakdowns than have both of them record the same thing just to make it sound virtually the same)

I'm loving your unrushed full-on Rick Beato-ing of this Home Free original *bop* :)
It's *such* a well-crafted pop song with Home Free's signature #Wholesome feel. Wish we had more of this kind of thing on the radio & thru mainstream culture.
You ask for my favourite part of this, so for me: Toward the end of Chance's solo here where he starts to climb up a little going into a chorus with full cord closure he sounds great, & I'd like to hear more of him doing so. His breathy lower parts in other songs are very soothing, & I love those too, but I've a feeling he can also do something special leaning some energy into things. Having said that, Austin's 3-stage ascending belt into the final chorus is an absolute undeniable *weapon* which should be pushing this onto nationwide radio.

I saw them live a couple months ago and they do openly use live looping/sampling. Adam Rupp will record snippets before they start the full song and then add/remove them as needed.
P.S. This IS the original! It was written by Tim Foust, Jeffrey East, & Patrick Dodge. There are only two covers on the So Long Dixie album.

Home Free does use layering for their studio albums, simply because it's what studio recordings is for. All bands do it, and they consider themselves a band rather than a group, because they use their voices as instruments in a band like way. They usually do a somewhat "simpler" arrangement live because that's what bands do live, they don't lose their sound live, due to it live, though. 😁
