  • Today I'm chatting about what I learned after getting rid of over 60% of my clothes part TWO! I I used to always be "on the hunt" for the perfect item to build my perfect wardrobe. In the end that left me perfectly overwhelmed and perfectly...BROKE! Nowadays I'm embracing a "less is more" (but not too much less!) philosophy when it comes to my wardrobe, and I've started to really figure out what my style is and what I no longer need to buy for my closet.

Have you decluttered lately? What did you learn about yourself from it?
Edit: just want to note that there’s NO PRESSURE to get rid of this much in your wardrobe or space, especially at once, or to glorify that. If you watch my channel, then you know extremes are no fun. Only you know what serves you or brings you value. Stay true to that in your process. 🥰

I had way too many prints in my dresses... don't get me wrong I love prints but my wardrobe lacked balance... And as I moved to a very sunny place I had to make changes in my wardrobe and found it hard to do so... because it meant letting go of things that i loved (or loved the idea of it) but no longer served me or never served me. And this comes from a wardrobe of about 80 pieces. I decluttered some of my print dresses as I realized I mostly the white or black ones and only some prints... And I definitely kept also the fabrics that are good for this temperatures in Provence...I still have to declutter some of my jumpers as I definitely don't need as much as I currently have....but I struggle with emotional attachement...and maybe fear of missing them... but if I were to pick what I wore last winter in Provence, the process will be really easy. I definitely need some help.

I've been changing my wardrobe drastically recently. I'm learning to dress for my own comfort and happiness, and not to impress someone on the street who won't remember me 5 minutes later.
I've been dealing with fibromyalgia for a couple years now, resulting in me always being in pain.. so comfortable clothes and fabrics are important to me.
Not having items anymore which don't support me in that way has been so great.

In the time when I was like 10-15 I had a lot of clothes. First because I had two older siblings and because my mums friends all had kids a bit older than me, so when they grew out of their clothes I got them. I got like 1-2 big Ikea bags every few months. At on point I had 75 short sleef T-shirts. And for a long time I kept a lot of things because there were for free. I remember feeling completely overwhelmed and also having no clue what MY own style was because I was wearing other peoples style. Now that I have only the clothes I love I have so much fun with my wardrobe. I got rid of everything I didn't think was worth keeping. And that wasn't done in one big declutter, that took me years of exploration and finding out, what I like and what suits me. I am now so much happier I now my wardrobe will never be perfect because I'm always changing but now I feel confident and comfortable in everything I have in my closet and that only thanks to decluttering everything else. So I have learned less is truly more.

after buying then decluterring various shades of tan/beige trench coats, i finally accepted that the "essential" for others does not work for me. they just wash me out no matter in which tone. instead, i opted for a navy collarless trench and i find myself wearing it again and again! yes i regretted alot for the money wasted, but somehow i managed to realised that it's just a learning or knowing-myself process and those coats have fulfilled their mission in my life already. i'm happy to let them go at that time so that i can focus on the one that actually fits me. and i learned that the "essential" can be really personal or very different for everyone.

To find my personal style, I actually had to put all the social media, including Pinterest, away for a while and just start dressing up my own closet and what I already had to figure out what I really liked. I’ve never been more confused than when browsing outfits and trying to piece together something for me which was worn by so many different body types in so many different settings with vastly different lifestyles. For example, In theory I love skirts, but in reality they just don’t suit my lifestyle very well, until I discovered recently that a midi bias-cut is just perfect for me compared to A-line or Long maxi/flowy skirts. That’s something you can’t really discover through Pinterest, but through trying out your own wardrobe and proof of concept with thrifted pieces. I totally agree that clothes cost more than money. The time I’ve spent browsing looking back, is unbelievable. How much time I have used in my days looking for clothes rather than living my life, clothes that I ended up reselling because they weren’t quite for me. So right now, I’ve put it all away so I can just wear my wardrobe for a while and figure out some proof of concept and narrow down my style. Pinterest is also very broad in style which makes it very difficult to find what you actually like. I think eventually I may go there to find some inspiration but for now, I need to find my personal style first. Great tips! I love your encouragement to creativity rather than outfit formulas.

I just recently graduated college and took it as an opportunity to really size down and curate my wardrobe. What I learned is that my personal style is much more compatible with the professional world that I’m entering, and I was able to declutter the fantasy college self I never was. I kept shopping for “going out” dresses and clothes, even as a person who just doesn’t like going out to the club! Having all those clothes really fed into feelings of inadequacy, and now I feel like my wardrobe is much more suited to my actual lifestyle and personal style.

A couple of years ago I went through a phase where I purchased a lot of traditionally feminine clothes, i.e. skirts, dress etc. I've always been a tomboy, jeans, Vans, t-shirts are my go-to and are what I feel like myself in. I've realized that the reason for those purchases was more than just wanting to change my style or experimenting something new. I never felt comfortable in those clothes. I've donated most of them and trying to sell the items that are expensive. Now I'm perfectly happy with my old style, more importantly I'm happy with who I am. Great video!

I think there are quite a few of us (everyone who watches such channels, really) to whom clothing represents creativity, self expression, style, image and so much more - its why we spend so much time, effort and money.
My realisation was that I wasn't actually spending enough time with my wardrobe to know it well, despite the time/ money/effort on shopping. But shopping is really just the first step. Styling it, figuring out a personal style, finding and filling gaps, everyday that I spent understanding how it made me feel, and how I thought about it - I understand now how much it means to me, how deeply I really enjoy getting dressed - I used to think it was frivolous, that there were deeper things in life competing for the mind-space... Now I think whatever brings joy isnt a frivolous thing at all. Im gonna embrace my wardrobe time ...treat like a good friend who deserves respect, attention, time and steady effort. In return, its paying off in terms of style, better choices, impulse control, more awareness and joy.

The biggest lesson I have learnt over the last few years is about taking care of my clothes and making the effort to get them to fit right. I have a fabulous local seamstress who has been able to adjust my clothing so it fits right for my very European shape (I am not straight up and down 🙂). This has been a game changer for me. A small price to pay but a big impact in terms of my likelihood to wear the clothing. I also purchased a de-piller and goodness me, my jumpers and coats look brand new again. And I like the mindfulness associated with caring for my clothing - it contributes to valuing these items more.

I learned that I don't like to mix and match my outfits. I tend to have one or two favorite combination of pieces, even if the separate parts can be matched with other pieces. And that its good to have some choice in fabric, looseness and number of layers. I want to roll out of bed, ask myself how I feel that day and choose a premade outfit that fits that feeling.

  • @Ayshafr
    @Ayshafr Před 2 lety +10

I don't declutter clothes, or at least I rarely do, and I like keeping things that I don't like because I know sometime in the future I'll come back around to it. I'm the same way with hobbies and most things in general, I tend to get bored easily but fashion is cyclical, both in the broader sense of trends but also my own taste. I find that I usually regret getting rid of things unless I can't fit into them, and even then I sometimes like keeping them as fabric to repurpose (which I don't often end up doing, but it's fun when I do).
I do agree though that it's really important to just spend time with what you have. What's helpful to me is having a closet app where I can look at and think about and put together my clothes without having to physically dig through them and try them on every time I'm thinking about clothes. I also take a picture of my outfit every day and use my outfits as my own inspo lol. It helps me understand what I like on my own body from what I already own. It's not that I never look to others for inspo, because I certainly do and it helps me get creative, but I definitely spend more time dissecting my own pictures to understand what elements work for me and how I can achieve that with all the other clothes I already have.

Very good points, thank you! I love the dress-up-game and I'm nowhere near being a minimalist (nor is it my intention to become one), but during a few recent years I have become much more intentional and meaningful in my wardrobe choices. Here are two ideas that have helped me:
    1. I now know "my colors". I like colors a LOT, but that doesn't mean they all suit me. By knowing "my colors" I can easily avoid buying garments that I will not wear anyway because they clash with my complexion.
    2. I know that I'm "a dress person" - a proper dress (also proper for current season - temperatures vary from -30 to +35 where I live) is a complete outfit, just add accessories and I'm good to go. I have learned that I almost always prefer dress over some two-piece. So, I have no particular reason to buy a new skirt, even if it may be cute, because it will rarely be worn, if at all.

I haven’t been decluttering because I don’t think that was wise to do during quarantine when we didn’t have an idea of what we wear. That said, since the world has opened up a bit, it feels like everything in my closet is a new find and I’m paying attention to the clothes I’m excited to wear after two years of not being able. The clothes I’m not excited about can probably be donated. Like you, I’ve realized I just don’t need all these dresses. I bought them for a wedding or other formal event and never wore them again. I’m also going to get rid of the things I swore I’d have tailored. I haven’t, so I must not really want them. When I really love something, I always make the time to have it tailored so I can wear it.

Some clothes are old, some clothes I just love. I have way more clothes than I need and yes that's silly. But I'm not in debt, and can afford this habit. I have accepted that clothes are my silliest weakness. But that's me and I'm good with it.

I've always known I'll never be a minimalist. I don't have to learn it. I know within my heart there is joy in wearing quality colorful and neutral colors and i cannot be trapped in a number like 30 or 50 pieces of clothing. What I believe to be sustainable is "intentional living". I find it to be somewhere in between minimalism and excessive lifestyle. Being intentional is hard but it is way more rewarding than minimalism as you are still yourself but controlled at the same time. The right amount of control is good for one's health, environment, finances, etc. But in the end, to each his own. Do what makes you truly happy. 😊

I am so sick of bringing along the same perfectly good clothes that I never wear but can't get rid of because they are perfectly good. Help! Well actually, you already did help. This was very helpful in getting me into the mindset that will allow me to part with unneeded clothes. Especially when thinking about my personal style and stop thinking about "just in case". I find it also helps to sell the things I declutter. Or donate to actual people in need rather than thrift stores. Psychologically, it's hard fore to give something away when I don't know where it's going or who it will benefit. Anyway, I've rambled enough. Here I go to weed out my wardrobe...

Love this video. I agree with not tying yourself to a number, whether it be 30 or 100 or more. While I’m nowhere near a minimalist, I’ve set limits on my wardrobe where there’s a designated spot for everything. If it starts to overflow, then I know it’s more than I can manage comfortably and I start to downsize. It’s all about what’s manageable for you and how effectively you’re able to rotate through and use what you do have so all of your wardrobe is functional and practical.

Love love love this video!! So raw and real!! Thank you Christina for being you!! I love clothes, I love fashion, I love building outfits, it’s a way I use my creativity!! AND no one is counting how many pieces of clothes you have but you. No one is in your home looking at how much or how little you have, but you. Your home and wardrobe has to give you peace and happiness if not then let it go. I go with functionality over minimalism. I dress for what role I am functioning in - there are many roles in my life - wife (date night) homeschool mom (casual) homeschool co-op director (semi professional) homebody (lounge) athlete (athletic wear) and so on. Christina I applaud you! Thank you for your perspective and opinion. So refreshing!!! I began watching you when you started to downsize your wardrobe and you were in debt!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️ And yes I am still decluttering!!😁❤️

This is very inspiring. I admit, my style is completely different from yours. I’m a performer and thus have a lot of Stage Outfits. A lot of them are able to be worn in my every day life and even to the office if need be (with a little creativity). But as a result, I have an insane amount of clothes because of all the “characters “ I like to play when I get dressed. They’re all me, just me if I lived in another decade or inside of a tv show or movie.
That being said, I agree that a personal balance needs to be found when it comes to how much clothes we own and intentional spending. It’s highly personal and depends on your lifestyle. So appreciate the insight

I really, really appreciate how honest you are about the fact that decluttering is not an aesthetic and it's not a one-size-fits-all approach.
I've been working on developing this decluttering as a mindset- and I finally connected my inner peace with it. That is what I'm hoping will sustain this habit of decluttering as a lifelong mindset! Thank you Christina for your content that promotes grace and self-care!

I've been slowly letting go of things over the past year and have done a really good job of not bringing many new pieces in. I recently started selling on Poshmark, which I find motivational because every sale truly does inspire me to take a look and see if there is anything else I'm not wearing that I want to give a new home to. I've just started my second term for my master's in El. Ed., and I'm really trying to scale back on my current wardrobe to make way for a "teacher wardrobe." I have been taking a look at pieces, even pieces I still love, and asking myself if they convey the message I want to be putting out into the world now that I've started on this new path. I still have my "artist's wardrobe," because I am continuing to expand my photography/art practice and present myself in a different way when engaging with my art audience, but even it is being scaled back and curated to reflect where I am now. I've found it difficult to let go of who I was, but I know that I must let go of what no longer serves me so I can be who I am now.

Been loving binging all your decluttering related videos and no buy videos lately 👏🏻 been on a journey of decluttering and I think the main things I’ve learned are that 1. Just because I think something is cute does not mean I need it, that it will flatter me, or that it would get use in my wardrobe 2. If it doesn’t look flattering on me or make me feel good then I don’t need it 3. Regardless of if I like it, if I’m not wearing it then I don’t need it 4. I have started to realize that I have a few areas of weakness for example graphic tees which I love, but now I’ve started to ask myself do I really need another graphic tee? And is this one actually going to add to my wardrobe or do I have some that are similar? ❤️ thank you for your videos I’ve been really enjoying them

Very good points. I admire your honesty! I tried the minimal wardrobe with three tees, three pants, two blouses etc and I got really bored with the lack of variety, with wearing the same things every day. I found, by trial and error, that my optimum is around 50 items summer and 80-100 in the winter.

Although I haven’t decluttered clothes this year, I’m currently pregnant and I have no idea what I’ll like once baby is here I am looking forward to massively cleaning out and revamping my wardrobe once it’s that time for me. However I have been cleaning out and being more intentional with home decor, we moved into a much smaller home in January in hopes to live more simply and the whole process of prepping for a baby but intentionally bringing in furniture and clothes for them has been such a journey! Lots of your advice carry’s on throughout our whole house, not just our closet and dresser!

Just found your channel and wanted to say a huge thanks for putting me back on the right track. I retired from the workforce a decade ago and at the time my closet was full of business trouser suits and crisp cotton shirts. So I proceeded to embark on a decade of casual clothing buying binge that I never loved or wore…….I have just decluttered more than 60% of all that and guess what I am left with…… polished casual blazers, collared shirts and pants. Loved it all my life and still have pieces from my business life that I can dress down for a more casual look. Just missing a couple of pieces that I will shop for with purpose.

I agree with you 100% is what you’re comfortable with. I would love to get down to a 30 piece wardrobe also, but there’s things that I don’t want to get rid of. The reason why a 30 piece wardrobe would work for me is because I’m retired. Maybe someday I’ll get down there but I have a bout 20 pairs of shoes and 50 items I think of clothing. I don’t go very many places anymore so I don’t need a lot but I have a hard time letting go of some of my really nice things.

I am now happy with what is left...only items I use on a regular basis. After watching this video I decided to count my clothes (not including lingerie, accessories, or shoes) and total count was 120!!. i've been in the "revising" camp for a while now. since decluttering to my core wardrobe of 20-30 pieces, i'm finally adding duplicates of the uniform pieces i wear the most as well as some new things. i may end up with 30-40... & i'm trying not to feel guilty about it.
