I was just reading about the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act that Hoover signed (under duress from his fellow Republicans) during the Great Depression, and it worsened the economy even more. They (GOP) were hyping American protectionism at the time, and it failed big time. Would love to hear your educated take on the topic. Thanks.
You know what I find interesting? It's something that's been just kinda bubbling out here and there, but I think Trump may have been affected (too early to say "profoundly" affected) by Biden's phonecall to him just after the attempt on his life. I think Biden was (and Trump realized that Biden was) the only person to call him who did not have anything to gain bu showing concern, and that Biden was _genuinely_ concerned about his life and his health! I just don't think Trump has ever experienced anything like that before, not from his parents as a kid, not from his many wives, and not even from his own children. Biden was the only one to care to call and ask after his health who has nothing to gain by it. And according to Donald's mind, Biden indeed has something to lose by Trump's survival. Who knows if, how much, or how long this brush with human emotion will change or affect his behavior or outlook on life, but to several people (in thst leaked RFK Jr call and to reporters, openly) Trump marveled at how nice Biden was! I don't know if he honestly knew that before. He might believe all his own propaganda - Biden the Evil Incompetent Genius or whatever - so the "nice" phonecall - when he knows no one else really cares about his health beyond their own interests - might have been quite the surprise.
