      Ha ha that’s funny. I’ve driven thousands of miles around Africa, including a lot in Namibia. Always in Nissans and Toyota’s . Wouldn’t touch a Land Rover. Most Africans think their a liability😂😂or a strange quirky British tradition like morris dancing.

    The “emotion” of it all 🙏😂👏 of driving your car onto a beach where this happens daily, and then driving out to safely. Amazing job to the editor for creating a “drama” out of what could have been stock footage.

    Well done to you guys, I know how important it is to check local conditions and tides with the local community before venturing out into the unknown, there’s been plenty of times when I’ve been stuck on my own hundreds of kilometres from any other living thing in north west Australia and one really has to be confident in their own ability and their gear to get out of sticky situations .
    You all did well and will remember times like this in future expeditions.

    Excitement is great for videos. Funny thing is, tides are eminently predictable, almost like clockwork, months in advance.
    Don’t mess with ocean tides for excitement. Either they are completely drama free or you fail and lose, maybe even lives.

    We are from Wales and spent 6 weeks in Namibia in 2005 in a rented Hilux. We were solo travellers and we racked up just under 8.5K km in that time. We actually drove this (solo) having done much research and taken local advice re. tide times. The window of opportunity to do so is quite wide in reality. As you now realise, you probably were too relaxed at the beginning and so cut things a bit too fine, hence all the panic.
    As something of a contrast, I can also recommend a traverse of the Messum crater in the Goboboseb mountains if you have time. If you're lucky, you'll have it all to yourselves, as we did.

    Hi Guys, I am only too familiar with getting stuck on a beach with a big swell, a rising tide and a setting sun. Flinders Bay on the south west coast of Western Australia looks almost identical to the Nambian beach, including the blood red garnet sands by the shoreline. The bay has coarse rounded sand which acts like a truck arrester bed, as the sand doesn't compact. The waves causes it to hum an ominous D flat. It eats cars. Once on my quadbike I came across a carcass belly up buried in the sand with its four wheels missing, taken by modern day wreckers. Twice I've had to abandon my broken down bike and had to walk home many kilometres in darkness. The anguish was awful, I will never take a car onto such a beach. The horror, the horror, the horror : ( I'm so glad you didn't come a cropper.

    Are your wheel alloys? If yes, that guy is over-torqueing them. With a 0.5meter breaker bar, you only need a force of about 27 KG (~250 newtons) to achieve the recommended 133 nm torque Torque = force (newtons) X distance (m) or 270 x 0.5 = 135. Wolf HD rims require 170nm which is about 38kg at the handle. Effects of over-torqueing could crack rims or lead to loose nuts down the road.

    Nice vid. 3 of us (all male) will be going to Walvis Bay soon and we will be renting a 4x4 Toyota Hilux auto. May I know do we need to get a permit to enter towards Sandwich Harbour? I saw a photo in your vid with a hanging sign by the road "Namib Naukluft Park Sandwich Harbour Permit Required. No camping, No Angling." Maybe they are refering to no camping and fishing? We are experienced road drivers but not on dunes. I guess just need a few miles practice. What’s your advise. Shld we take go by our own since we already hv the rented car? BTW, is auto driven ok? Tks

    • @TheLandyExpedition
      @TheLandyExpedition  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi! So you’ll need to acquire a permit in either Walvis bay or Swakopmund I can’t remember I think Walvis bay. Do you use iOverlander? The information is all on there.
      If you can afford to take a guide I would. Especially if you have no experience driving in the sand. Getting stuck is a real possibility and once you’re stuck without the right recovery equipment you can loose vehicles very easily.
      Plus taking a guide you should gain some knowledge from them so next time you can do it safely by yourself!
      Good luck and enjoy!

    Seems like the mis-fuel was a made up drama as well.... I owned a Landy and I would simply have drained the tank using the bottom bung then filled it to the brim with diesel. Why the need to remove the rear tank? Then I can't understand why the beach was such a drama... surely those Landies can wade through a few inches of water? I don't understand why you timed the trip for a rising tide.

    • @TheLandyExpedition
      @TheLandyExpedition  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks for your input. Can assure you me taking the tank out was not to make drama. 😂 it’s a mission of a job!
      We don’t have a bottom bung in the tank. The bung where you can drain the tank sits 4/5 inches above the bottom of the tank leaving too much petrol in the tank to risk it in my opinion.
      We timed the trip
      Perfectly with low tide giving us plenty of time to get down one way. The dunes the other side were too big to tackle forcing us to go back down the beach. It was more the other Landy getting stuck which was the delay and resulted in us cutting it fine.
      Cheers 👍🏻

    Talk about making a drama out of it!!! 😂😂 you can tell by how the sand bank is that it doesn't come right up it. I suppose if you haven't done things like that before then you wouldn't knkw how to read the land. A quick clue is the change in angle of the land. You could have bumped up a lower bit at any time and been fine until the tide went out. I suppose that doesn't make good viewing if you give that away. 🙄

      Hey Alex. The 10k section where it “sandwiches” you is 100% not passable up the dunes trust me! You’ll have to see for yourself if you don’t believe me. Only a few days later a rented hilux was destroyed on the same section. Have a quick google of how many vehicles have been stranded along there 😉 thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed it

    I am still confused as to why people do not just have paddle tires. You canont use recovery boards every 10 feet. They dont even have to be wide, just get very very very aggressive tread tires as spares, at least 2. Its going to take up some room, but come on.

      @TheLandyExpedition Sure. When visiting the dark continent, ( going on safari for you Poms) don't assume everyone looking different than you are competent. They're not. (I'm South African) Get out of the vehicle to make sure the correct type of juice goes in the gas tank. Use Google to get tide timetables for dangerous gully crossings. All common sense.
