    Much buzzed about singer-songwriter Beth Hart, known for her raw and powerful blues-rock sound, and guitarist Joe Bonamassa, one of the best guitarists of his generation, will release their sophomore album of classic soul covers Seesaw on May 21, 2013
    Seesaw is the follow up to 2011's Don't Explain, on which Slant called Hart "a simply peerless frontwoman;" AllMusic.com said "Bonamassa and band accent her every phrase with requisite rowdiness, sting and grit." About.com called the duo "a match made in Heaven" and MOJO praised their "potent musical chemistry." The album was nominated for a 2012 Blues Music Award.
    Seesaw opens with a joyous horn reveille to kick off "Them There Eyes," made famous in 1939 by Billie Holiday-one of Hart's biggest inspirations. "My mother turned me on to this song when I was a kid," says Beth. "I love the bubbliness. It's sexy, it's fun, and it has a great swing to it." On the track "Nutbush City Limits," Hart wails with an intensity that would make Tina Turner proud, and her slow and soulful burn on "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" pairs dramatically with Bonamassa's smoking guitar. The tempo kicks up several notches with Hart's tight, rocking vocals on "Can't Let Go," from Lucinda Williams' Grammy-winning 1998 album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. It's followed by her fierce cover of "Miss Lady," the Buddy Miles song that was originally produced by Jimi Hendrix. Hart revisits Melody Gardot's songbook to deliver a sultry, jazzy rendition of "If I Tell You I Love You." "See Saw," is a Don Covay/Steve Cropper composition from Aretha Franklin's 1968 album Aretha Now. The album closes with Hart's haunting and atmospheric version of "Strange Fruit," a song that began as a poem about American racism-and lynching-by Abel Meeropol.

    I've known of Beth Hart since the mid to late 80s when she was a contestant on Star Search... this is the most subdued I've ever heard her. As a black man, I AM IN LOVE WITH HER. Her voice here is chilling, haunting, captivating, mesmerizing.... wickedly exceptional delivery. PERFECT

    to maddraws: this song was not even written by a black person, it was written by a white jewish man from the bronx named abel meeropol. He wrote it as a poem after seeing a photograph of a lynching. This strong and powerful song carries the same message no matter who sings it. it is a painfully clear metaphor of lynchings, and you dont have to be black to sing it, the message is universal.

"well,....... not much but as I said, my parents hated em so that's why I do too!" this is so sick! it's on such a demonic level that only almighty God can solve it. and I hope with His help we can stop this kind of hate. if not then we all are the losers!

      Ropaj Green she (Billie Holiday) wrote it, I would guess the direct shock of seeing what she was speaking about must have over powered the desire to share and from your words I would also say musical capability to convey the vision beyond a thought, she did not want to record nor perform the song as the story is told. She did it after much urging from the label who felt the poem needed sharing. I think the other interpretations only have their appeal because the other singers (who most likely have never seen a black person swinging dead from a tree) could feel and hear the melody with the distance required to not feel that numbing shock that you seem not to understand why you don't like from Billie Holiday's recording (the truest and most genuine rendition PURELY BECAUSE of its direct interpretation) they sing what they understand of what she saw nicely while she converted her truth under duress. this is a beautiful interpretation though.

    • @bluespig1
      @bluespig1 Před 7 lety +4

      That's not actually true. Abel Meeropol wrote it as a poem in 1937. It was later recorded in song by many artists, probably none as haunting as Billie Holidays version although Annie Lennox also does a lovely rendition well worth looking up.

    I've got chills!!! I have been a huge Billie Holiday fan for decades. For me personally I would prefer MOST singers stay away from trying to cover this tune because they just can't do it justice. I should have known that Beth would be able to make it as haunting, painful, and mesmerizing as it deserves to be.

    I love this song, the eeriness makes you feel like you are in a dark forest, seeing the bodies hanging. You can picture it in your mind. It's amazing that they can emote such emotion from the chords they play that make you feel like you are there...experiencing some of the most horrific things that were done to black people for a very long time.

    The ignorance in some of these comments is laughable.
    Before you start throwing hate & racial bigotry around maybe do a quick search on google as to the history of this song & see who actually wrote it & where it comes from.
    The poem was written in the 1930's by Jewish New York School teacher Abel Meeropol after he saw a gruesome photo of a Southern Lynching.
    It was 1st printed in 1937 as Bitter Fruit.
    Took me less than a minute to find that out..
    but I guess some would rather continue hate than educate and learn the truth behind the song.. & that is just sad.

      Likely the first anti racism poem, then song ever written and the most powerful message. When one views the imagery behind the lyric those souls become like entities, one can feel the horror and pain. I am just sixty years old and Canadian however I travelled through the South in my thirties and was disgusted to see the realities that still existed then and to this day. I was on a beach with my daughter and there was white shower, coloured shower and my daughter questioned me about it. I explained the realities to her, she cried and was overwhelmed. She then insisted on using the coloured only shower and so I allowed her and did it with her.
      The glare and looks of disgust on many faces towards myself and my child were evident and scary. As we walked by I heard horrible remarks towards my actions and could not contain my anger. Until that point, although taught about racism and the hell African Americans endured, it was not until that day that I fully understood the hatred instilled in people then and still to this day. My child was with me however my anger was raging, so difficult to contain. I heard n...r lover again and lost my shit. We all bleed the same colour of blood, we are all human beings. I was not successful in shutting their ignorance down however I was successful in teaching my child that there is no room for hatred of another human being because they look different....This lyric/song is historical, Beth and Joe did an incredible job of portraying the message....

      And when blacks call elvis Presley a racist who stole from blacks?
      That is complete ignorance. The worst kind of vile racist BS and ignorance.
      The facts say so.
      Elvis Presley was progressive.
      Rockabilly is parts of black blues and white country western music and spiritual music. That sound, that glorious fresh sound was A REVELATION. Actually bringing music together in this new punk upstart. When you listen to the sun sessions, you are witness to a revelatory new sound, combining together all the music the young elvis loved growing up.
      Anyone who says that elvis is stealing from blacks? Is an ignorant racist fool.
      35 years of studying and research gives me the knowledge and critical thinking to point this out.

    @ruthhwoodcock1363 Před 10 lety +66

    I think this is one of the saddest and most gut wrenching songs I have ever heard.... most famously known through Billie Holiday's rendition.........
    "Strange Fruit" originated as a poem written by Abel Meeropol, a white, Jewish high school teacher from the Bronx and a member of the Communist Party, as a protest against lynchings of black African Americans. In the poem, Meeropol expressed his horror at what Lawrence Beitler's photograph showed of the 1930 lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana. He published the poem under the title "Bitter Fruit" in 1937 in The New York Teacher, a union magazine.Though Meeropol had asked others (notably Earl Robinson) to set his poems to music, he set "Strange Fruit" to music himself. His protest song gained a certain success in and around New York. Meeropol, his wife Anne, and black vocalist Laura Duncan performed it at Madison Square Garden. Meeropol chose to write as "Lewis Allan" in memory of the names of his two stillborn children. Later, he and his wife Anne adopted Julius and Ethel Rosenberg's two sons, Michael and Robert, after their parents' executions. Michael and Robert took the Meeropol surname.
